Booing Stephen Quinn

just read on that other board that people are c**** if they don't sing the 'new songs'!!!

One of which, they were informed was a pig song :)

What I think is quite amusing, is they think it's something completely new and they are preaching something others don't.

The atmosphere hasn't been anything like it used to for a long time now (that's based just on my blades supporting lifetime, never mind that of the older blades on here), some people try and create one, some just join in, some don't bother in the slightest.

It has good intentions at the root of it, but at the end of the day, abusing fellow blades in that way because they don't join in with your brand of support is out of order. Same was as tarring people you don't know with your normally incorrect perception of them, shining examples being some of the young racist element taking this piss out of some of the more staunch and regular away support, having no idea just who they were.

echo the sentiments of most of this thread.... some of our fans are an absolute embarrasment to be honest. Quinny was dropped to the bench and rightly so and surely that is all that was needed, the barrage of boos will do nothing except hinder Quinny and to be quite frank he doesnt deserve it. There have been loads more players in the past who have contributed a lot less to the club than Quinn and none of them have been subject to the same treatment, what is more he is a young lad who has been at the club his whole career and is going through a bad spell if anything we should be supporting him and if he cant regain form than he'll go... booing isnt necessary.

Here is a thought to throw into the mix .............

I think that it was very harsh for Quinn to be booed by his own fans. I feel really sorry for him.

However, think of it another way. Quinn has been underperforming for a long time. The fans clearly don't want him in the team, yet KB has a soft spot for him. It's clear that fans wanted to express their view that they didn't want Quinn in the team. For a large number of Blades fans Quinn's form has been unnaceptable for a long time! A large number of fans don't want him at the Lane and think that he should have been shifted this summer. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not condoning booing him, but what other way do fans have for expressing their view that Quinn is not fit for wearing the shirt??

Its simple for me, if a player/team has been poor, then boo them if you like. But NOT when they come on, or at the mere mention of his name. Booing a Blade ON is bang out of order.

Can't agree enough with Shreds1975 and his/her assesment.

When Quinn came into the team during the Premiership campaign I thought we had uncovered a proper player. Composed in possesion, good engine and a killer dead ball.
I can't put my finger on when this went horribly awry but I suspect it was probably when Blackie came. He seems now to simply help the ball on rather than settle on it and look to use it.

It's been a sad demise and I think a loan spell away would do him the world of good.

As for the booing I don't really care. They're big boys and should be able to take some stick if it's dished out.
They could always get a job working in a hospital casualty department for minimum wage on a Saturday night. They'd find out what abuse was then!

Did anybody else wonder though, as soon as Quinny was getting ready to come on that some boos were inevitable? I sat there and thought what is the point in this substitution? Surely Blackwell must know there's going to be some booing and is the substitution really necessary with 2 minutes left and we're 2 up?

So your argument is that it's okay to boo the Blades because people working in hospitals get worse, so because they get paid a lot more they should be able to take it.

Strange kind of logic for someone that considers themselves to be a supporter of the team.

If you want to boo anyone, boo the opposition or why not get tickets for a Big Brother eviction night or the Christmas panto?

Booing your own team just makes no sense at all.

This thread and the ultras thread are crossing over a bit aren't they. Even if the reason for booing a player is to make a point to the gaffer it is unacceptable. I would like radio sheff to put a straightforward question to Blackie though, maybe that would clear up some confusion about team selection?

Wow, some leap from not being arsed about what other supporters want to do to being a booer.

maybe people were booing him because there wasn't long left and they know he would have been crap had he got longer on the pitch :p

Booing is always going to be a controversial subject. As a paying customer we are entitled to express our opinions. If I went to see a band and they were crap I would say so (I remember Doves getting a few catcalls for being cocky sh1ts and having a pop at the atmosphere at the Octagon a few years ago). I have been known to boo the Blades generally for particularly poor performances, always at the end, never during a match and it's a good release after the frustrations of 90 ineffectual minutes. However, I don't see the point in booing an individual player from your team and certainly when he has not at that point stepped on the pitch.

We always have had a particularly vociferous element who are not afraid to say what they think and often defend their actions with threats of violence against fellow fans who challenge them and things often go too far. I remember an away match at Oxford when they put 5 past us. The old away end was a narrow terrace right up to the goal line and I remember the legend that was Alan Kelly (largely blameless for the diabolical defending in front of him) turning towards the fans prior to taking a goal kick and wagging his finger at a Blade saying "Don't you call me a w@nker". Crazy.

No you don't remember that, because Alan Kelly only ever conceded five in a competitive match once when playing for United, which was at home to Stockport when we lost 5-2 in the League Cup in 1996, I think.

In fact, he never played in a competitive match against Oxford for the Blades, home or away. Talk bollocks about a match if you want, but make sure there's actually a match you're talking bollocks about.

EDIT - actually, we both got it wrong, but I was more 'vocal'. Sorry, fella Blade.

Yes he did.

He played at Oxford in 1996-7 when we lost 4-1. United were 3-0 down after half an hour (Martin Aldridge hat trick) and defended diabolically, and people were booing.

This is clearly the game that shreds1975 was talking about, and no doubt you'll be apologising to him...

Ooooh, tha reight! I will certainly apologise! He never conceded five against them though!

What's worse, is that I seem to recall being there! So I'll deny the bollocks about a match where someone clearly was at, and I might have been at, but can't quite remember being at ....

or summat ;)

Aye, sorry shreds!

Agree 100%.

Disgraceful behaviour.

What exactly are the booers tring to achieve? We have a decent solid 2-0 win, so why boo a player onto the pitch? Are they purposely trying to reduce the morale of the squad?

I'm the same - I think Quinn has been poor the back and of last season and shows no sign of much improvement, but booing a lad onto the pitch wearing the red and white is a joke. Tbh it put a dampener on the end of a decent win for me.
Two or three years ago Quinny looked to be a very good prospect. Has he not improved?
Would smaller players like Quinny, and perhaps Billy look better in a team playing to a different pattern or system?

Thanks Revolution. So it was 4 and not 5. It felt like 5 stood there watching that debacle and sitting on a long coach jouney home. Thrashed and outplayed by Oxford - not a great day and one where booing at the end was acceptable, just not calling Alan Kelly a w@nker.

It was absolutely freezing as well, although the weather 2 years later was even worse - torrential rain on an open terrace for the whole game. At least we won that one.
