What annoyed me most today was the stewards near us.

They always show the deeks where to find their seat, and block your view of the pitch..........if fans can't work out a row and seat number is they shouldn't be out without mummy.

What's worse is their insistance on blocking the steps.....I thought they were supposed to keep them clear??

I had to go to the toilet half way through the first half, I blame the cold, and as I was in a rush 3 stewards blocked my way down the steps.

As I came back up the same 3 stewards were totally blocking my way to the extent that I had to shove one out of the way.....he didn't look best pleased but so be it.

Do they have their brains removed to get the yellow coat I wonder?

Why do the stewards on the Kop constantly badger the fans to sit down, on occasion going as far as getting the police involved, yet take absolutely fuck-all notice of the away fans stood up constantly throughout the entire game? Because they are weekend-warrior jobsworth twats, that's why.

How close have you been looking? Over the years since the Kop became seated the steward have been ultra-zealous about this, especially with the supposedly "bad lads" near the back. You may not have seen it, but, and I do not want to upset you, how long have you been going on the kop? Me, for almost thirty years. Yes it's a lot safer since it went all-seater, some would say because of the stewards, but some stewards take their part-time jobs very, very seriously, up to and often beyond the point of reasonable behaviour.
I have seen stewards involve the police, and the police have said to the fans that they cannot stand up, despite being at the back and not getting in anyone's way. One of the officers agreed with the fans that it was, and I quote, "a load of bollocks" but went on to say that if a steward involved the police, the police then had to act to the letter of the law, meaning if a steward wanted you to sit down or get thrown out of the ground, the police had to remove you if you refused to sit in the seat you had paid for, even if there were empty seats near where you were standing.
(This was at the Norwich match around 2000-ish, I can't remember the exact date, but it was when Norwich had Peschi on loan, before he signed for us.)

Well i stand at the back of the kop all time, and have never been asked or seen anyone to sit down.

I have been going on the Kop all the time for about 5 years now. Before then i sat on the John St. stand.

Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen, and with respect, you can't be watching all the Kop all the time, can you? That's why they have more than one steward and one cctv camera. Also, if it is happening well away from you then your attention is likely to be on the match, not the crowd. I've not seen it much lately, as I sit on row P, but friends who sit at or near the back assure me that the stewards are still as friendly as ever, except for the idiots at the top of gangway F, who are skilled only at standing in the fucking way and needing three "excuse me"s to move.

I don't have a problem with the stewards telling people to sit down. In fact if they don't they are not doing their job.

In most grounds it's in the terms and conditions of your ticket that you must be seated at all times. If you can't agree with that you should not enter.

I have a much bigger problem with stewards getting in my way!

I don't mind them telling people to sit down, the point I was trying to make was that they are almost maniacal in the way the act in certain parts of the ground, whilst totally ingoring the away fans standing throughout the game. The majority of stewards at the Lane seem to be power-crazed morons. They are very, very good at standing in the way though.

Perhaps with their inconsistant use of rules they may become referees!

:D :D :D

With regards to standing in seated areas,

If we fail to control fans and keep them seated, it can lead to fines for the club. It's health and safety in the respect that you could fall over your seats etc. If there is a number of people near you who are stood too you could have a domino effect in that one falls over brings another down bla bla bla.

Now with the kop (as only about maybe a hundred want to stand) it is easier to marshall than say 3,000 away fans.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to stand all the way through a game, but stewards are paid to do a job. In your jobs, if you didn't do it properly would you expect to keep it?

Well at Watford I was on my own at the back in the very top corner seat.

The stewards made me sit down!

:D :D :D

I have an attachment to a steward :D and can say from numerous conversations (albeit from one in charge of a family enclosure) that all stewards are expected to carry out very clear instructions handed down to them by Police, Local Authority, Health & Safety Executive and The F.A. via the Club. Football supporters, like most members of society, have fallen foul of the litigation culture. with many ridiculous rules and regulations in force because of directives by insurers to either ensure cover or to minimise premiums.

Foxy was very much in praise of one of the chief stewards at Vicarage Road last night.

Not only was he fine about our flag going on the netting behind the goal, but also helped him attatch it to the seats.

On the final whistle, he said there was no point being arsey about petty things because at the end of the day, we're all football fans and wished us all the very safest of journeys home.

Contrast this to the policing at Goodison Park where the coppers on patrol had us down as good for nothing hoolies before the match had even kicked off and would only see inproprieties one way... might have been something to do with the fact they were only looking one way :)
