Fantastic pod again.
I recall the Port Vale game (Yes I did bloody go) when me and the Mrs went to the car park after the game to protest. After all that place has been the traditional death knell for quite a few managers! There were a few hundred in there. The fans cheered the Port Vale players as they came out and booed our own. More pantomime than serious.
We told the police we weren't leaving till he (Heath) faced us. About half an hour later the copper said he's resigned. We thought it was a rouse to get us to leave. Someone had a radio and said it had been announced on Radio Sheffield. We all cheered and went home. What a weird night.
---
The Arsenal games...We went to both. I was hammered at the first and was fuming on the cheated goal. I was firmly behind the 'Brucie, Brucue take em off!' chant. It now sounds a bit perverted. I also remember the 'Seaman, Seaman where's your kids!' one which was funny at the time but now seems a bit distasteful.
Recall my girlfriend and now wife throwing a programme onto the pitch (she's not violent I promise).I then nearly got in a fight with an Arsenal fan in a bar in Soho that night (We stayed at my sister's who lived in Clapham). I was only young...19 but was acting like it was the most disgraceful thing ever. I was aghast the replay/rematch was not at the Lane.
I went to the replay too...going down from Leicester..was at Uni there. I missed a few lectures to get there. I recall coming back on a supporters bus and one lad got arrested at the game. We went to a police station in North London to get him but ended up waiting for about an hour and half till he was released. He got back on the bus grinning thinking he was a hero but he got dogs bollox abuse!
Those days I had no money (nothing changes) being a student but spent it all travelling round watching United, drinking ale and going out clubbing Friday/ Saturday and many other days too.
Life seemed so much easier!
