This was fantastic by the way

Morning all! Not a new episode of BladesPod I'm afraid, but I did record a chat with Sam from the Pinch yesterday in which we went over some hopes and fears for the new season.

Some context - I'd been chatting to Sam about how he was much more optimistic about the upcoming season than I was, and we had some back-and-forth over how our opinions differed and eventually suggested we record something where he tries to convince me I'm more worried than I should be. So yeah, be prepared for me to feel a tad negative about what's to come (I mean we did just finish 13th and have sold our two most creative players) but as always I've tried to make sure it's rooted in some realism and fact rather than blind faith / pessimism.

Oh and very pleased to see that the old adage of "Ben records a podcast; United immediately sign a player" still applies. Still got it.

A good listen as always and a lot of salient points discussed. I did chuckle at the end when Sam asked you if he'd convinced you on a few points to feel more positive, and you said yes, but your tone of voice said all we need to know 😉

My enthusiasm and optimism left the building with me at Wembley and I'm just hoping they are going to return to me at some point. Like you, I hope I'm wrong about a few things going into the season, but it's hope more than expectation.

Enjoyed that…people will not be surprised to hear I am more in your camp than Sam’s when it comes to this season’s prospects… and don’t worry I don’t think that particular signing will really effect those prospects.

I’ll look forward to listening to that on my way back from London on the train, later.

Genuinely hardly listened to any podcast since you and Beans broke up 😳🥹

Enjoyed that listen and look forward to aging into being the Grumpy Old Man on The Kop (GOMOTK).

Quite cathartic that someone feels the same about next season as I do, some of the responses on here and on twitter you'd think we've assembled a championship super term and are going to get 110 points 😂

My enthusiasm and optimism left the building with me at Wembley and I'm just hoping they are going to return to me at some point.

I think mine went just before the game. I’m normally quite an optimist in life, but before that game I remember looking at both sets of fans (us with the scarves, them with the stripes) and thinking “this is going to be miserable either way - if we win it’ll be crappy next season, if we lose it’ll all have been pointless”.

I’m delighted for Sunderland that they had a great season last year. But football is football and it won’t last for them. Either this season, the next or the one after that, they’ll be in a relegation battle again and their fans will complain and stop enjoying it (just as any would). Then, like all teams eventually, they’ll revert to their natural position, which is probably similar to ours, and they’ll feel like they’ve failed.

I don’t think that my football optimism will come back. However, since the last Wembley disappointment, I’ve started to just enjoy each match on its own merits. I want us to win, but I’ve found that I can enjoy an entertaining defeat if we played well.

Maybe I’ve just finally grown up, or maybe it’s a defence mechanism after the nine play off defeats and non-ambition in the top flight.

That said, if Arblaster gets back to his best, and Phillips clicks, maybe we could… No. I’m weakening again.

God, I miss Bladespod!

I'm glad it's not just me who feels that the manager and club are often saying things or making decisions with the sole intention of personally winding me up.
So do I, but I'll make do with Ben doing guest appearances.

with the exception of Sam’s point that the players we already have will be better prepared than last season, it was difficult to agree with any of his counter arguments to your pessimism.

Which is worrying!

Is it just me or have all but the final three episodes disappeared from all platforms?
Hello, a little while ago I reactivated my soundcloud sub as someone wanted to listen to an old episode and hadn't realised that they weren't accessible til then.

Anyway, took me a while but I've now put every old BladesPod episode in a Google Drive folder, which you can find here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1_cQZp05_eXnSFpUEcQSQ-TjPia3ueBz-?usp=sharing

The file naming is terrible, sorry - the perils of me never settling into a standard naming format! If I can be arsed I'll try and manually rename them so it's more obvious which is which, but at the same time I don't expect too many people will be wanting to dig out eg a random home defeat by Bristol City in 2017. However if there is some specific episode you did want to grab and can't work out which it is, give me a shout.

I'll now be ending my soundcloud subscription (saves me a few quid), so if you want old episodes for some reason, that folder is the place to get them :)

See above!
