Hi!

I am a 17 year old football fan and aspiring sports journalist. I attended Saturday's game between the Blades and the Fulham and I thought you all might be interested in reading my report of the day, as well as viewing a few of my photos. Any comments/feedback is much appreciated. http://ryan147.com/2014/01/30/sheffield-united-1-1-fulham-fa-cup-4th-round/

Thanks!
Ryan

Apologies! I don't understand as I definitely linked to the United report :s But it's edited now anyway..

Well done. It's unusual for a journo to talk about themselves as you do because generally readers are more interested in the game than the writer. But apart from that, if I hadn't been to the match and wanted to read about it I'd have found t your report very useful and better than most and a big improvement on anything Martin Samuel writes about the Blades.
Stick ti it kid and convert to the Blades - they'll always let you down.

As a neutral, who do you prefer? Which is the better ground? Which is the better atmosphere? Us or Wednesday? ;)

Ryan,

You've been here before if I recall? Is the decision to move into journalism recent, or was that your plan before? Good luck with it anyway, it's a brave choice!

Hi Ryan,

I'm a student journo at Sheffield University and I've got to say I'm really impressed by your enthusiasm and initiative to get in there.

You should give The Star a call and see if you can spend a week or two with their sports desk - they are good people. You may be told that they save work experience slots mainly for 2nd Year uni students (which they do) but point them towards your website and it will show them you're actually serious about where you want to be.

When I was 17/18 I managed to get in there and loved it - the stories I wrote there and at other South Yorkshire publications helped me build the portfolio that got me my university place. So I'd definitely recommend giving them a nudge.

I really like what you've done regarding the website. It's very bloggy but that's fine as you're using it to get noticed and to tell people what you're all about as well as showcasing your budding talent.

I'm quite positive that journos do read these forums every now and again so hopefully someone will pay attention at some point.

Keep writing and good luck, mate.

I think above all well done on showing some initiative and passion to blog/match report etc, any employer will see that as a virtue. When I was at Uni (fairly recently) I was/am still friends with most of the boys who were on the Sports Journalism course and the ones that have found good jobs are the ones who went to Amateur Boxing events until late at night, U18 games on a Saturday Morning or semi-professional football matches in a dump stadium on a miserable day. They lived and breathed sports journalism which seems to be the same for you. Get out there, speak to coaches, managers etc. and get some connections along the way so you can add some interviews to your site. Good luck pal.

Ryan,

Are you related to Mike Watterson who was one of our directors in the early 1980s before owning Chesterfield for some seasons?

Well done for putting yourself out there and having the bollocks to go for something you want. Work hard, dont let anyone or anything stand in your way and best of luck. :)

Thank you for all the views and comments, I hope you all enjoyed my report and really appreciate all the comments :)

Rodley - I couldn't possibly choose! To be honest I don't think there's much in it, and as a Sheffield-born Spireites I'm hoping that the Blades, Owls and Spireites will all be in the same division again next season!

Trigger Blade - Yes, I've been to the Lane a number of times and have also posted on this forum before. I've always had an interest but I've only begun taking it more seriously in the past year or so.

beatific blade / Deadly_D'Jaffo - Thanks for your comments, I am hoping to study journalism at Uni next year so comments from people who've been there are especially helpful. I've attempted to get as much experience as I can (eg. I've worked with the Owls press team for a few matches) but the Star would be a good opportunity so I will look into that - thanks for the suggestion!

Silent Blade - Yes Mike is my great uncle!

:)

Have you applied to Uni of Sheff, Ryan? One of the top three in the UK in every league table. Although there isn't specifically a sports journalism course at undergrad level, there's nothing stopping you taking on a sports position at the award-winning uni paper, Forge Press.

Good job. Not just the report but the blog, pictures and overall effort put in. The report was insightful and you have obviously put a shedload of effort into it. Deadbat needs to watch his back :)

If you could replace that numbnuts Shields that works at the Star it would be a start :)

Always enjoy your reports Ryan. You should visit more often, we'll soon knock that enthusiasm out of you;).
