It seems that there are more than a few fans on the Kop who fancy themselves as genuine, bona fide Serie A style Ultras. I've not seen much of them first hand during the matches, sitting as I do on row P, but comments on this forum and in the flesh from fellow Blades seem to put across the impression that there are some wannabe hooliganistas out there.
These mainly young lads must be trying to pass themselves off as possibly the "new generation" of BBC, fancying themselves as the new hard cases. Well boys, I've got some news for you.

Shoving past parents with young kids doesn't make you "hard". It makes you likely to be on the receiving end of a clip. Nor does slagging off those who won't join in with your abuse of black players. I'm not condoning anything that the old BBC from the past did, far from it, but these new "Ultras" should bear in mind that a fair few of the real hard cases they claim to be succeeding were in fact black. United fans never have, in the great majority, been racist. We've never gone in for the abuse dished out to black players that other clubs have been tainted with. Indeed, several of our best players have been black.
The BBC of times past were, and indeed some still are, very bad lads. These young impressionable idiots are so under the sway of Danny Dyer documentaries that they can't see themselves for the fools they are.

Young muppets that know no better.

The back of the kop is full of em and they're at best Chavs and at worst knobheads.

I've never heard racism at the lane and it surprises me that they're trying to be racist thugs.

Agree with everything in both posts.

Filthy brain dead scroats, I'm embarrassed to support the same club as them.

Football attracts Chavvy tossers and we have loads of them.

If they are being racist report it because we dont want them at the lane.

"We've never gone in for the abuse dished out to black players that other clubs have been tainted with."

Sorry, but thats simply not true. In the 80's (when I was a season ticket holder), any opposition black player at the Lane was guaranteed to get the monkey chants aimed at him. This was probably something to do with the fact that United did not have a single black player between Trenton Wiggan being released in 82 and Richard Cadette signing in 87.

The last time I remember a black player getting the monkey abuse at the Lane was Devon White of Bristol Rovers at the start of the 88-89 season. The fact that it died out that season may well have had something to do with the Deane/Agana 60 goal partnership that year...

I think yer jumping to the wrong conclusion.

My understanding is the 'Ultra's' just want to boost the atmosphere at Blades matches by encouraging the chanting ! ... not racist, not thugs, not chavs.

Ultras like to claim they encourage, but the Ultras i've seen in Italy, Greece and even Cyprus have been far from a bunch of friendly encourage-ers.

From what i've seen they cause far more trouble than any English 'fans' have done for years. Fighting (often with other groups of their own fans - Olympiakos 'Gate 13' etc), ripping up seats, storming the pitch, racist chanting, all whilst their faces are covered with Scarves.... you know the normal encouraging behaviour of atmosphere boosting Ultras

I soooo love correcting you here Darren. I clearly remember we had a player called Russell BLACK mids 80s. Does that count ?

totally agree, although the ultras thing is for me a bit bizarre!

and the cbeebies are all a very happy mix of races anyway.

i'm not in anyway condoning them, just stating a fact:)

Yeah on their facebook page it says they want to create a better atmosphere at away games i.e more fans, more singning, standing up, blah blah blah.

Yeah on their facebook page it says they want to create a better atmosphere at away games i.e more fans, more singning, standing up, blah blah blah.

But they seem to want to do that by bullying other fans and casting aspersions about the kind of fans who travel to away matches.

I'd say I was a pretty regular traveller, I think you can count the number of matches I've missed in the last three seasons on one hand. If we seem to be able to get away with standing, fair enough, we'll stand up. But not if there is someone behind us who wants to sit down.

Now I have seen these people who would prefer to sit down referred to as "cunts". I'm sorry, but if you want people to look sympathetically at your cause, and get approval from the club, then that isn't the right way to go about it. Many of these are older Blades who have served their time standing on terraces and now the old joints won't let them. Many of these older Blades have also seen more trouble than these little up-starts could imagine... back in the days of fireworks, bricks and acid attacks. So a little damned respect wouldn't go amiss.

Apparently women are to blame for the lack of atmosphere too. Which, when I manage to shout myself hoarse at many away matches, is a bit of an unfair accusation to lodge at this particular woman and many of the others I would consider as regulars at away matches.

The biggest problem they face is that they want to stand up. Absolutely no club in this league will give express permission for a group of fans to stand in seated areas - it's more than their ground licence is worth.

So if all they are going to achieve is to make people sing a bit more... I would perhaps suggest they they don't isolate the very people they wish to join in by calling them names or telling them to stay at home in the kitchen

Spot on. It also amazed me that they were on Blades-Mad complaining about people not joining in with this Ched Evans chant they'd made! It was hard enough understanding what they were saying, let alone singing along with it. They seem to think that football is all about them & how they can get enjoyment out of it, rather than anyone else.

come on, this whole 'ultra' thing in England is cringeworthy. I've nothing against groups of young (or any age people really) encouraging singing, chanting and generally getting behind the team. Safe standing areas would also encourage this and improve the atmosphere at football grounds. Racist abuse should not exist in any walk of life, but ill tell you what, there are a few older people sat around me who mutter the odd racist word - i doubt very much whether its restricted to our new 'ultra' chabbies.

I've said enough on this issue, but it just creates an intimidating atmosphere for other home supporters - and makes me think twice about away games this season.

I've been following the blades for 35 years, twice as long as some of them are in years so i don't need some squirt of a kid telling me when to sing and when to stand up!!

its a waste of time, my dad tried that the other year, and the stewards attitude was 'theres nothing we can do' and worst still, this was in the family stand. its ridiculous, young kids shouldnt be hearing racist comments on a day out to the football.

here here!!
Same here. in the last 2 years I've gotten into more arguements with "fellow" Blades than in the previous 34 yrs. I no longer want to stand up, I paid for a seat and I shall be sitting down until we score. Strangely, sitting down doesn't stop me singing though! If that means more arguements/fights so be it.

Glad you said that. Same is true for me and HH - and I was beginning to wonder if it was just cos we're getting older and don't suffer fools as gladly. Nice to know there's loads of us feel the same way - just not sure if we can actually do anything about it

I think with the amount of dummy spitting going off about it elsewhere and the relative age of those wanting to be involved, I think a better name would be the Ultradrys...

Stop your pissing :D

I sit in the south stand, last block near the away fans, me and my daughter sing the greasy chip butty song, we cheer, jump for joy, whinge...it's the men where we are that are quiet, and the lads just throw wanker signs to the opposition. People whinge about the atmosphere, but times have changed, there's more official presence and you do have to watch yourself on all levels.

I once got too loud about the referee, no swearing, I just said he needed specsavers, to be told to sit down and calm it!

There's fault on all levels about this topic.

I think you might offend a few Panathinikos fans with that comment, thats almost like saying Sheffield Uniteds OCS.

Good atmosphere at gate 13 though

It's actually got fuck all to do with being racist and acting hard you fool.

If you actually took the time out to read what they want it's nothing of the sort.

They have no intention of causing trouble or becoming the new generation BBC.

Yes some of them are a bit OTT with the way they are going about things and the way they talk about it, but they're just excited fans who want to have a good atmosphere at games, what's wrong with that???

They are wanting to all be at the back of the fans where they won't obstruct anyones views if they are standing whilst singing. They want to create a really good atmosphere at away games as our fans are pretty dire away from home, well even at home we ain't that good.

Now you jumping on the 'they're hooligans' bandwagon and making out they want to be like the Italian Ultras is way of the mark.

If you want to sit down all game and support your team non vocally that's up to you, so why have a go when some lads want there to be a good atmosphere at games by singing?

I'm not condoning anyone shoving past you before you start, but your generalisation of these fans is way of the mark.

Serious question, do you try to vocally support your team throughout the match? And do you oppose fans trying to create a good atmosphere at games?

If you'd actually read elsewhere before getting your knickers in a twist, members have heard instances of racism this weekend from the "crew" at the back of the Kop.

Infraction for name calling too. You've had more than enough warning in the past.

Many thanks.

Ah, name calling again. Very good. Well done.
Where have they posted what they want? And since when has been calling a black player a n****er not been racist?

My generalisation of these fans is based upon my experiences of the young wannabe-tough guys I've come across. What's your generalisation based upon, or do you know them all personally so you don't have to generalise?

I do sing at matches, but I'm not going to do it just because some spotty youth is telling me to.

And I oppose thugs and racists. Do you?

Seems to be a little ageism here not all young male fans are cocks we were all young once.;)

Id be happy if any one wanted to get he fans going and cheer the blades on so long as they behave.

God knows we need some new blood its starting to feel like a library if it gets any quieter.

Id be happy if any one wanted to get he fans going and cheer the blades on so long as they behave.

I don't think anyone has disagreed with your first point... it's the behaving thing that some have a problem with.

There's one group that we've seen a few times (because unlike some of the ultras, we do travel to most away games ;)) and they were responsible for the racist chanting at Burnley.

Couple that with their selfish attitude towards anyone who does want to sit down and their belief that if they call themselves something, they can flagrantly ignore the ground regulations (which say you cannot stand in seated areas) and you've got trouble whether they intended to or not.

Can you imagine them sitting down quietly if a steward told them to sit down? Or do you think that all the ones thrown out will be martyrs against the nasty clubs not wanting them to have any fun?

i dont have any problem with them wanting to stand too many rules in this world any way.
if we all followed every rule nothing would ever get done.
i challeng any one in the entire country to tell me they have never speeded.
only ones how could posibly say they havent dont drive. :D

have you never stood up in a seating area then linz

sounds like a few bad apples to me sure most of them arent cocks

They want to create a really good atmosphere at away games as our fans are pretty dire away from home, well even at home we ain't that good.

Strange comment given that even during the Premiership season - when our numbers were swollen by newbies - our travelling fans were voted the best visitors by Man Utd and Villa (can't remember the others - Sunday Mail for any anoraks out there :D) - and even today the Lane is recognised for being one of the most intimidating grounds to visit (hope thay mean the noise and not violence).

Generally speaking the fans are fine - just look at these pages - and that includes the vast majority of the young uns too. I have a 16 yr old lass sit/stand by me who has been upset to the point of tears by the racist crap we hear.

If the "Ultras" want to sing - let 'em sing - - if they want to stand at the back and not block others view - let 'em stand - - if they want to call us all c**nts (as on Saturday) - tell the stewards (cos they ain't worth getting into a ruck with and loosing your own ticket) - - and if they want to be racist - sling 'em off the back of the Kop

I'm happy enough to believe that they don't want to be thugs like the Italian "Ultras" - more of a Shoreham Street Choral Society :) - but choosing that name suggests to me that some of them at least are just into it for a reaction - in the same way that 1960s skinheads had swastika tattoos to draw a reaction from war vets. Perhaps the getting pissed and calling eveyone c**nts is just part of all that?
