Apologies if already mentioned but as the year draws to a close the sheff United writer for The Athletic has posted his team off the decade.

See below. I don’t have many arguments

Anyone got anyone else in there? I reckon peak coutts or Norwood get into my side.

Possible argument for a Jamie Murphy.

Mine would be

Hendo

Walker maguire Egan JOC Stephens

Fleck Coutts

Duffy

Billy and Mcgoldrick

Did Kyle play for us this decade? Thought it was around 2008/2009 he left.

Quick Wikipedia - was recalled from his loan by Spurs in Feb 2010. Must have been f*cking good in that January if he gets in our team of the decade.

I had a pop at this on last week's podcast (SUBTLE PLUG) and just went with a 4-4-2 because I'm outdated and that's how I remember the "Team of the Whatevers" being structured, but it was still basically our current team + Coutts and Duffy instead of Lundstram and Egan (and Sharp for Mousset).

GK: Henderson
LB: Stevens
CB: Basham
CB: O'Connell
RB: Baldock
MF: Norwood
MF: Coutts
MF: Fleck
MF: Duffy
FW: Sharp
FW: McGoldrick

Honourable mentions for Kevin McDonald, Lee Williamson, Harry Maguire and Jamie Murphy.

McDonald was good but I don't see a case at all that he's more deserving of a place than Norwood. For starters he only played League One for us.

He was fucking good, but it’s a fair point you make. The annoying thing was that I don’t think Spurs used Walker at all after the recall, but it managed to help screw up our season and promotion prospects. However, I see all events of this nature in the last decade as part of the path to Wilder getting the job and these great times, just imagine how humiliating it would have been in the Premier League under Blackwell, can’t believe there would have been endless press articles raving about our tactics and attractive style of play.

Teams OK on paper or in a computer game.

On the grass ...... ?

Ain’t so sure. Aside of which we are now firmly established as a pioneering 3 / 5 at the back with a further 3 in midfield.

Bit too much sentiment over our current centre halves there - Maguire has to be in the team.

Yeah I teetered on Maguire and Basham. Maguire played more games for us than I initially remembered, although all but five of them were in League One. Basham has played almost every game for the last five seasons and been at the heart of the Wilder revolution, plus given us the highlight moment of "Basham arriving" that set us on our way to a second promotion in the time he was playing for us. Plus we've seen him be very good so far in the PL.

If you're going on pure footballing ability and their career direction it's not a debate, but I'd picked mine on different criteria (which is also why Kyle Walker wouldn't get in despite the fact he is clearly the most talented RB to play for United in several decades, not just this one).

Honestly don't think Harry has the engine to play the roll, yes he's a big lump and good in the air and brings the ball forward and feeds into midfield quite well, but bombing down the wing?

Nah. Be a bench warmer.

I think we are watching our team of the last three decades currently
I think realistically if we are looking at their time with us yes, it's our current team plus Coutts + Duffy ... However, if we are looking at the past decade and what they have done since... then Walker, Maguire, and potentially Brooks (over Duffy) get in the team. For me McDonald doesn't get in over Norwood or Coutts.

Walker over Baldock yes not sure if I’d take Maguire over Egan in a back three.

Prime Duffy over Brooks is a close call

I suppose this depends on whether we're judging on how they were when they played for us or their overall career.

As some have stated Walker only played for us for 1 month in this decade so would be hard to include but then if you look at his overall career then he has to be in. Likewise Jags.

Also you could look at players relative to the division we were in at the time. On that basis Ched would have to be in IMO. Likewise formation could play a part in the list.

I'll go with our current formation and both.

Best "while they were with us" 11:

GK: Henderson

CB: Basham
CB: Egan
CB: JOC

RWB: Baldock
MF: Norwood
MF: Duffy
MF: Fleck
LWB: Stevens

ST: Sharp
ST: Didzy

Best "overall career or division" 11:

GK: Henderson

CB: Jags
CB: Maguire
CB: JOC

RWB: Walker
MF: Norwood
MF: Duffy
MF: Fleck
LWB: Stevens

ST: Sharp
ST: Ched

Good team, but a bit harsh to leave out Chris Porter.

sorry to say this but it’d be Maguire over bash more like! and yes duffy and Brooks is a close call, but who would realistically take Duffy over Brooks now given a choice?
