I hope the quality that Watford have produced recently is a reflection on Mr Cox.

Udinese's reserves are quite good dont think its got anything to do with Cox though

I'm thinking more of Sordell and Young et al rather than the team's current success. They stayed in the Championship with an academy based squad due to financial difficulties. Whereas we got relegated spending money.

Kudos to somebody...

He was only the academy manager for the last two years.

David Unsworth getting the job.

Sounds like a very good appointment based on those articles.
The links he established with a local Secondary school sound interesting.
I wonder if he'd be able to do something similar with the Blades?

Along those lines Ron Reid was adamant that United scholars should keep their education up. Through this Phil Jagielka ended up in a GCSE resit maths class at the Sheffield College on a Wednesday evening. He got a B.

Watford have had 50 first-team debuts from their Academy in the last 10 years. How many have we had?
I reckon we could we get up to about 20 if we include one-game wonders like Tyrone Thompson and Terry Kennedy.

Off the top of my head but there must be more:-
Jagielka
Montgomery
Tonge
Quinn
Naughton
Walker
Maguire
Long

Thompson
Marrison?
Law
Forte
Ross
Slew
Kennedy
Harriott
McFadzean
De Girolamo

You can add the following:

Mark Ward
Ryan Mallon
Lewis Killeen
Kevan Hurst
Kyle McFadzean
Evan Harwood
Kingsley James
Jordan Chappell
Matt Lowton
Joe Ironside

That makes 28, but that is going back over 12 years (Jagielka made his debut in March 2000). Also Thompson, Marrison, Ross, C. McFadzean, K. McFadzean, de Girolamo, Harwood, James, Chappell and Ironside played or have played only in the cups reducing the league debutants to 18.

Of those 18 Mallon, Killeen, Kennedy and Hurst only played one game as sub and Ward (I think) played one full game and one as sub. Harriott and Law didn't play much more, which leaves us with 11 regular players from the Academy and its predecessor over 12 years.

Thanks Darren. I suspect the Watford total includes a number of “10 minutes as a sub in the cup” players as well as genuine first-teamers.

It's still impressive though to bring through around twice as many youngsters as we have done.
