Blades coincidences

Apparently, if you go on to Google and type in "Where is", and that drop-down list appears with the most common things people have searched for starting with those words, "Where is Port Vale" is third or fourth on the list.

I don't think Google existed when Cerberus was a teenager.

EDIT just checked. The most common one is "where is my phone"

Strangest coincidence for me was in a university library when I was all the way up in Dundee. I was listening to the blades (not sure of the match, some time round the Evans trial) , headphones in of course, when we scored I forgot my surroundings and cheered. I realised that one of the other 3 people on my table was reacting similarly, turned out to be a blade from Rotherham. Weirdly the third person on the table turned out to be a Leeds fan, as she was the daughter of David Harvey. Needless to say very little work got done and very quickly moved to the union bar.

During that same season (also in Dundee) I'd had a bit of a session watching the derby, when I finally made my way to the take away, what song should I hear blaring out? Annie's song! Turned out to have nothing to do with football and was just a coincidence.

Talking of Scottish goalkeepers.........I was telling somebody in a queue at M & S one day that I had opened a bank account for McAllister when I worked at a bank branch of the Midland many years ago and that Dover docks had rung me out of the blue one day to describe him to them when the big guy forgot his passport travelling with West Ham to France. The woman in front of me in the queue, turned to me and said, Do you mean Tom? I said Yes, why? She said she used to be his girlfriend and went out with him for a while!

Don't know if this qualifies. But when I was a teenager, Blades had an away match at Port Vale.

I got my AA road atlas out and looked for "Port Vale" in the index. No such place!

I was determined to point my Cortina in that direction and go to the game. But where in England was it?

I decided to phone directory enquiries and ask for the phone number of Port Vale FC and ask them where the fuck they were?

The operator goes...

"Directory enquiries for which town please?"

I say, "Port Vale".

He says, "Port Vale - do you mean Port Vale Football club?"

I say yes and explain that I'm wanting to phone them up and ask them where they are because I want to go and watch my team play them on Saturday.

He says, "Who's your team?" And I say "Sheffield United"

He then says, " that's my team as well! I'm a Blade! It's in the Potteries, in Burslem".

Job done!

(I think that was the game when Edwards scored a volley from about 30 yards out - thanks Directory enquiries!)

Pretty much the same story with the pigs, as the first Sheffield club to dip their toes in the 3rd they had to travel there and a group of mixed Sheffield football fans were sat in the pub one night wondering where the fuck Port Vale was, in fact that season the pigs taught us all where a few clubs were.

went on holiday to the maldives a few years back and took 6 old blades shirts with me cos i heard that the lads on the staff where footie mad,saw them playing 5 aside on a small sand pitch, one day a boatrip arrived from another island and just as i gave the shirts out,a guy at the bar said give us a shirt then ,my missus said that i should know him,i knew his face but couldnt remember where from, any way he got back on his boat and kept shouting give us a shirt has he sailed off into the distance. my missus said you daft get you see him every other week its gary sinclair from the lane .o_O
Bet you've not got one that would fit him now?:D

Only joking Gary if you're reading this. He's a fine figure of a man and a bloody good announcer!

Really? I never knew that. As the guy says - there were no tinterweb back then. Talking early 1980's I think.

Some of them Scottish ones must be hard to find also. E.g. "Queen of the South". I suspect that's in Brighton?

I am a third generation Blade and my son is obviously a fourth. He graduated as a vet in the summer and went to work in the Ontario Veterinary College Hospital on a 12 month Internship. One of his first patients was a cat brought in by a Blade who lives in Canada.

My wife & I went to visit him (and do lots of other stuff) just recently. During our stay , we visited an 88 year old Aunt & Uncle , whom we haven't seen since 1990. On the day of our visit the Blades were winning 1-0 at Bolton. They now Iive with their daughter & son-in-law , who (I had completely forgotten) supports ... Bolton.

I live in Cheshire and have Virgin Cable. A few weeks ago I phoned up to get Sky Sports , with the derby in mind. Given that I don't live in Sheffield and Virgin probably have call-centres all over the UK , you could have knocked me down with a feather when the bloke dealing with me revealed he was a Blade who had a ticket for the sty.

My Dad was born in May 1925 , the last time we won the FA Cup. My Grandad was presumably a bit pissed-off that it prevented him from attending , because he never mentioned this momentous occasion , despite enthralling the young me with all sorts of Blades tales.

Last Saturday we lost at home to Norwich. The last time we did that in the Championship/2nd Division , with a Blade in the manager's job , we got promoted that season to the Premiership.
This is the potential coincidence which excites me the most !
