No idea! Looked up the score, we lost 2-1, Jimmy Hagan scored. The Wendy match, we won with a Bill Punton goal, the Liverpool match, Terry Nicholl scored the only goal. We lost 3-0 in the Man U match (saw a photo of a Blade fan with blood pouring from his head as a brick was thrown at him)

It moved to Manchester to improve footfall and therefore income. Sheffield couldn't compete with Mancs on that basis, but would being the home of football have held sway over money? Doubtful....

we used to be as big as Manchester and Leeds.. what happened??

I visited a remote “castle” in a place called “Bran” in Romania. It was a village about the size of Bradfield. But like thousands of others I went there...why? Because Bran castle is the supposed home of Count Dracula -it’s just fiction- but it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year, based on it being just that.

But you don’t think with all our history in the game of football we should have tried, AT LEAST TRIED, to wrestle that off Preston North Bleeding End before Manchester got their mitts on it? How the hell did it end up in Preston in the first place? Why wasn’t it always only ever going to be here?

I despair!

This is exactly the attitude that condemns us to being a second rate city.

I totally agree with you that we shouldn’t be a copy of another city. 100%. But that begins with sticking up for what is rightfully yours. And we haven’t done.

So we have no identity and can’t even make the bleeding weather map on national TV!

It’s actially quite tragic and it’s only because I care that I feel so strongly about it.

it's always been the same. we live up a cul de sac that is walled up on the west side. We were only added to the M1 as an afterthought and because it was on the way to Leeds! it's because politics are dead in this city. Labour always win so Labour don't give us anything because they always win and the Tories don't give us anything because Labour always win.

Yes agree. There are positives to that. I prefer to dine out and shop in Manchester, but I prefer to live near Sheffield. Why? The proximity to the Peak District, the local beer scene, the friendliness of the people. The Blades.

1981- planned de-industrialisation, a planned move to a service based, finance based economy. Leeds was always in better shape to handle that due to the Building Societies based there (which all became banks and were taken over by multinational banks). Manchester, I think has always had a much wealthier "hinterland" , that as the road network has developed has allowed it to become a huge hub for the area.

I think our "Marxist" council is getting a bit of a hard time here to be honest. Meadowhall (and the whole of the Don Valley development) is hardly an exercise in Marxist economics. I'm not saying we have a great council but I'm not sure it's at the root of our slow economic progress.

BTW - over the last 20 years to council, labour have been in control for only 11 years, so we hardly fit a loony left label

I was a kid in 1981 so I’m not talking from personal experience but I’ve been told by people who were adults at the time that the Business Rates in Sheffield were horrendous compared to Leeds, which is why businesses tended to gravitate towards Leeds.

Traditionally Manchester was quite wealthy (I think at one point in Victorian times it was wealthier than London) but it also took a big hammering from the de-industrialisation. However, its council went into big public/private partnership deals to completely redevelop the centre.

All of this happened in the last century and it gave both cities a huge advantage over Sheffield, which it’s never been able to catch up. I’m guessing from your user name you’re about my age so you must be able to remember when Sheffield did have a very left wing council. By 1999, we were so far behind it’s led to continuing problems that affect Sheffield today.

I do agree though that with a lack of diversity to its economy at the time, Sheffield was always going to be hit hard. From a purely economic perspective, given the City was built to utilise coal and local minerals to manufacture steel, you could ask the question ‘what is the point of Sheffield? What relevance does it have to the 21st century? How would you sell it to a foreign investor who was looking to do something other than build more student flats?

Not sure if the club sell anything like this, but I was at the National Football Museum today and treated myself to a wee set of ceramic coasters.

Not particularly cheap at 20 quid but well worth it in my opinion!

Got mine at gift shop in Hartington. They have various football club ones. £5 each.
