From The Star...
SHEFFIELD United plc chairman Kevin McCabe has paid tribute to Kevin Blackwell's managerial credentials as the club prepare to embark on one of the most important recruitment drives in its recent history.
McCabe, who yesterday appointed commercial sports expert Michael Farnan as executive director, believes Blackwell possess one of the sharpest coaching brains in the country.
He will be entrusted with the funds to ensure United can build on their success towards the end of last season when they return to competition in August.
Blackwell is expected to make at least four new signings as he tweaks his squad ahead of an anticipated challenge for promotion, and McCabe said: "Kevin is one of the best qualified managers in Europe.
"He is a young manager and young in his thought process so I'm confident that we have the right man.
"He's shown what he can do and shown what his teams are capable of. I'm sure we're set for an excellent future under him."
Farnan, a leading figure in international sports marketing who has been pivotal in the commercial success of Manchester United and the Jordan Formula One team, has been handed the responsibility of revamping United's marketing strategy as McCabe looks to exploit its international brand.
The 48-year-old Irishman, who has also worked for Parma and Atletico Madrid, was managing director of Manchester United International which, among other things, helped mastermind the Premiership giants' increase in merchandising in the Far East and Oceania where Bramall Lane has forged links with partner clubs.
McCabe said: "Michael will be responsible for leading our commercial activities both nationally and internationally. He will be seeking to generate further commercial revenue and maximise returns from our worldwide family of sporting interests."
