United 2 Villa 0 – Youth Cup Semi Final (3-0 on aggregate)
Popped down to the Lane tonight to see the kids and thought I would share my thoughts on the game and the team.

----
Overall United deserved the win and controlled the game for the most part. United were solid if not spectacular and whilst 3 or 4 did impress in particular it was more of a team performance. The thing that impressed me most is they kept their shape and discipline (right until the end – more later). They did not create a ton of chances but being 1-0 up they did not have to and more importantly they limited Villa to very few chances until the last 10-15 minutes when the game was effectively over.

The game was fairly even for the most part early on but Villa had a few positive moments with Kennedy denying Johnson and soon after Villa had a half chance that was blazed over when they were well placed after good build up. United had a few half chances too with McFadzean and also Martin probably panicking a bit when put into good areas. Villa were looking to get Johnson on the ball and he was clearly their talisman but they did not seem to possess much of a threat up front. However United were gradually getting on top and with Harriott influential and Maguire commanding at the back they were pushing Villa back if not creating many chances. They tried to keep the ball and were calm in possession.

United then were able to get the vital breakthrough when they scored just before half time after a well worked goal. The build up saw the centre back Maguire in an unfamiliar left wing position but he did very well to create space and sent over a terrific cross that was smartly headed back at the back post by the other centre back Kennedy and skipper Whitehouse was on the spot to coolly convert. It was obvious how important this goal was being just before the break and doubling United’s overall advantage.
Villa made a double substitution at the break but United continued to shade matters and Harriott and Kennedy were looking relatively comfortable at the back. United were not testing the Villa keeper despite a half chance for Whitehouse but still seemed to control matters and the game appeared comfortable. Long was taking crosses when needed and United were playing out the game comfortably.

A few tetchy moments kept the referee on his toes but it needed a major decision 20 minutes from the end. Ironside pushed the ball past the centre back and keeper Barratt clattered the striker as he pushed the ball onwards and past him. It was debatable whether the striker would have got to the ball but there was no question it was a penalty despite the referee waving it away even though he was only 10 yards away. Fortunately the linesman flagged and the penalty was given. The keeper was expectedly sent off but his replacement was powerless to stop skipper Whitehouse doubling the advantage. Stupidly the scorer took his shirt off in celebration and was booked incurring the wrath of coach Pemberton who made his feelings clear that he was not happy with his captain.

It was to prove costly as not long after a poor challenge from Johnson when he went over the ball saw a melee ensure. Determined to take his own retribution captain Whitehouse wildly dived in and was rightly booked. He was fortunate it was not a straight red. The situation had been completely mismanaged by the referee who should have blown for a bad foul and sent Johnson off. Remarkably Johnson escaped any action as did numerous other players that were involved in the incident. There were a few more poor challenges and the officials seemed to lose control.

One of Villa’s substitutes Graham was clearly becoming Villa’s best player and for the latter stages of the game he showed many brilliant pieces of skill with some excellent efforts on goal and was unlucky not to score. Carruthers moved forward into the box just before full time and was tripped by Maguirre. The penalty was soft bit probably right. Carruthers took the kick but wildy blazed over the bar at the Bramall Lane end. With both teams with 10 men; the game was now stretched and Martin broke through for United and his low shot hit the post via the keepers outstretched hand right at the end of stoppage time. The referee blew for time not long after this and United’s player celebrated the well deserved win over two legs and now wait to see if they play Manchester United or Chelsea in the final.

Players – I am not going to go through every single player but the spine of the team stood out. The goalkeeper, centre backs and centre midfield were very good (see below). Whilst the front two Martin and Ironside worked hard being ultra critical they did not hold the ball up enough for me and the two wide men Gregory and McFadzean did not get in the game enough. We lacked pace in these front areas and missed the suspended Slew. The full backs, Montgomery and Barry were steady enough and kept their shape. It was more of a team performance and the shape and organisation stood out but if I had to look at a few individuals;

GK - Long - Very impressive. Took a lot of crosses but also punched well when he had to when in a crowd of players. Came off his line well and his kicking is good too. Looks very assured and one to look out for.

CB – Maguire – Very good. He is 6’2’/3 easily and very well built. He does lack pace and mobility and that is a concern moving forward but he a real leader and commands the defence excellent. Won headers all game but used the ball well as shown by the goal. Also came out of the defence well and was able to pass the ball rather than lump it. He would be no worse than Collins in my opinion and may be worth a few games before the end of the season if we are pretty much doomed.

CB – Kennedy – May not have stood out quite as his partner but I felt he was quietly as effective and mopped up a lot around Maguire. They played well as a pair and gave Villa very few chances other than from long range or right at the end.

CM – Harriott – Our most effective midfielder. He passed the ball well and was able to link well. Kept it nice and simple and was calm and assure. He also was strong in the challenge and created time and room for himself.

CM – Whitehouse – Got up and down all game and was combative but also looked a threat getting into the box. A good athlete with an excellent engine. He scored two goals and led the team well as captain until two idiotic moments when the game was over; with a yellow for taking his shirt off and then an idiotic lunge when he should have just walked away. Pemberton looked furious with him and I think he will miss at least one leg of the two legged final now.

Excellent crowd (over 4,000) with most of South Stand full from what I looked. However a minor gripe was that they only opened the turnstiles at one end of the South Stand (the Kop end) and this made for queues right out and around Cherry Street. I know it was a cost decision but I had arrived 15 minutes before kick off so it was not like everyone had got there just before the game was due to kick off. Also when getting in the ground most people had decided to ignore their tickets/seat numbers and sit anywhere. This made for a ridiculous situation of people asking for people to move who were in their seats and them not moving as people were in their seats etc! Not good when adults had young kids with them and could not sit together in some cases. There were no stewards about and it just seemed badly organised. Still minor moan aside it was great to see so many there and the players clearly were delighted with the numbers there and the enthusiastic support. Hopefully we may be able to fill 2 stands (if enough get tickets) for the final but I believe they do show it on Sky too?

thanks for a very comprehensive report, seems the youth set up bodes well for the future with a few very good prospects and a few decent ones.
might get a few thousand more for the leg at the lane, hope they organise a little better.
well done lads,a very bright spark in a dismal season, onwards n upwards.

Great report deadbat and spot on with everything. However, if eel Ironside deserves a special mention tonight, as i thought he stood out for me also. Reminds me a lot of Ched in many aspects of his perfomance.

Harriot, long, maguire and ironside should all be pushing for a place next season regardless of what division we are in, thought they all did the shirt proud tonight (unlike those on a saturday)

Also, watch out for Daniel Johnson for Villa, looks a real world-beater and rekon he has a bright future.

As for the blades, simply superb, thought we were well set up, well organised, they played as a team and for each other. Pemberton has definately got something going there, and with the addition of Slew, we could potentially be crowned the best youth team in england.

Well done SUFC, its nice to have a positive feeling coming away from Bramall Lane, and hope this lasts a long while!

Fantastic result...well done to the lads. I wished I could have been there for this one, the youngsters have been the one bright spot of this season so far. Hopefully 3-4 of them can make the progression to first team football soon. Of course then lurks the shadow of McSell who is doubtless rubbing his hands in glee.

Really good to leave the Lane feeling positive about the future. Yes, they won't all make it but statistics from last time we did well (QF in 2007) suggest that 3 or 4 should make it.

But who will they be?

Based on tonight, Harry Maguire is a cert. He was the stand out player on the pitch by a country mile. He commanded the defence brilliantly, won everything in the air and looks comfortable on the ball. Already over 6 foot with time still to grow, the lad has the look of a dominant centre back. Add to that that he created the first goal with a peach of a cross (with what, I think, was his weaker foot) and we have a gem on our hands. He was on the bench vs. Leeds and the general opinion was that he should replace Collins now. I'd love to see the lad alongside Chris Morgan next season. Morgs will cover him and coach him and he will be a star this time next season in my opinion.

The lad at the side of him (#6) - name anybody - was also superb defensively. On a few occasions, he gave the ball away by playing too much - particularly first half - but then recovered the situation well. Goal saving challenge at 0-0 that stopped Villa going in front. Not in the same league as Maguire on that performance but definitely someone we should be looking at bringing into the squad soon.

Full backs were steady but I'm afraid I didn't see much going forward. In the second half, the Villa #16 murdered one, then the other which was a worrying sign. Granted, he may be a very good opponent but I didn't see much to be excited about. One of them was Ben Montgomery, the other (#3) I'm not sure on the name.

Forgot to mention George Long in the goal. Had nothing major to do and never had to make a save. After two crosses that he could have dealt with better either side of half time, he commanded his area excellently second half as Villa's #16 peppered the box with balls in. Need to see how he does against some shots though to make a judgment.

In midfield, the central pairing of Matt Harriott and Elliott Whitehouse - any relation? - looked very balanced. One thing that annoys me about SUFC is the idea that we need one destructive, one attacking midfielder in the centre - why can't we have two who can do a bit of both? These two tackled well, had good feet and looked to move forward often. Whitehouse looked particularly good going forward and got both goals tonight. Harriott looks particularly assured on the ball even in tight situations. However, we saw the problem with youngsters in Whitehouse - two stupid yellow cards that led to a red. After scoring the penalty, he was booked for taking his shirt off - come on lad, we know the rule by now. Just celebrate the goal. And then - after the ref missed a shocking tackle from Villa #10 (Johnson) on Harriott, Whitehouse needlessly got involved and too aggressive in the tackle. Didn't need to do it. We were 3-0 up, cruising, there was no need.

MacFadzean on the left reminded me of Yeates - very hit and miss. It wasn't his night but I've heard good things. We'll have to see about him I guess. Right winger - #7, name anyone? - was not involved much and I didn't see anything to excite me there.

Up front, without the prolific Slew, United had Connor Martin and Joe Ironside. Ironside is very similar in stature and style to Ched Evans. Good work rate, won the ball in the air well and held it effectively. Good feet as well. Didn't get a chance to score but won the penalty for the second goal after good work - how did the ref need the lino to give that? Looks a good prospect too. Martin was another hit and miss for me. Good pace, tricky feet but a little inconsistent. His shooting was nowhere near powerful enough when he got chances edge of the area. Hit the post late with a well positioned but weak effort but I'd need to see more of him. Disappointed not to see Slew but I'm guessing he'll play alongside Ironside in the final so we'll get a look.

Overall, impressed. Of the team that started, I'd say Maguire, Harriott, Whitehouse and Ironside look the best for making the first team. Obviously, Slew and Long are others we'll see too. #6 could be useful as could Martin and MacFadzean.

Villa - as mentioned, Daniel Johnson (#10) looks a real prospect. Ran the show in centre midfield for a while but there is a definite aura of arrogant git about him. His bad challenge started the rumpus that led to Whitehouse's red card. Got booed by the Blades towards the end. I think that as the game was up they showed some immaturity and petulance and it spoiled what had been a good game and a close contest. 3-0 on aggregate does flatter United based on what I saw but United did deserve it. Villa's sub, #16, Jordan something, also looked dangerous after coming on at HT. Quick and skilful, could be another one to watch for.

United - Pembo has them well organised and they play some good football. They need to understand the balance between tippy tappy football and the need to play direct - too often they nearly played into trouble when they needed to send the ball forward but they play patient football and it is refreshing to see. A few of United's first team could learn from them to be honest. Maguire is ready now IMO and should elbow Collins out of the team very soon.

Ref - Awful. Even in a Youth Cup game that we win 3-0, I'm annoyed about the referee. Wasn't going to give a cast iron penalty and his inability to spot the foul from Johnson led to the sending off of Whitehouse. Dear me, it gets worse.

Fans - great turnout, South full apart from on the wings. About 5000 I'd estimate. Would be great to see 10000 for the Final.

UTB!

Good write up Wombwell, saw it as I did.

I'd have no problems in getting Maguire in for Collins. And if Matty Harrriot cannot so a better job than Doyle then we really are fucked.

Can't argue with much of anything on this thread. That is the first time I've come away from the game thinking Maguire has been better at CB than Terry Kennedy (#6) as I've rated TK2 every time I've seen him.
It's all in the "spine" for me.
As for Whitehouse getting sent off, what the hell was the ref doing letting a full scale melee develop for 20 seconds or so after the first foul? There was ample time to blow up and calm it down but he just let it escalate until the inevitable happened. Pathetic refereeing even at this level!

PS. Really hope the Villa #4 makes a career for himself. Must be room in the game for someone called Samir Carruthers!!!

Well done lads.....nice to have something to be proud of where the Blades are concerned. Good luck in the final and lets hope we see some of you in the first team next season.

Great news!
