Given most of our play away from home or against a top 6 side is down the channels and looking to get crosses in (how many crosses or forages down the flanks did we make yesterday?!) - surely Billy has a case to start? He would've buried McGoldrick's chance at the Lane and Robbo's chance yesterday - both from 6 yards out - feel for the lad.

But he isn’t able to do what mcG can do outside the box. Wilder got his subs spot on yesterday.
Sharp is a bit cuter at winning free kicks and taking pressure off, so for that reason may be a good option in games like yesterday.

Although Billy's all round game has definitely improved over the past couple of seasons, he is still primarily a box finisher. Yes he might have burried the 2 chances mentioned by the OP but would he have contributed in the same way as McGoldrick or Robinson over 90 mins?

I'm a big Billy fan, and if he played for Man City he would score 30 goals a season. However, at this level we need more than just a fox in the box. I'm sure Billy will get more game time over the season but it will mostly be off the bench or when we are going for it against the bottom teams.

Don't disagree that Billy will score if on the pitch, but l think it's a bit nieve to assume he would 100% have stuck the mentioned chances away. In order for those players to have been in the positions needed to get those chances, their build up play and movement would be unique to them. All players move in their own way, into positions, at a pace, that only their style and physique can deliver. No way would those exact circumstances arise with Billy (or any other player) on the pitch.

Basically, it's a pointless exercise - would'a, could'a, should'a - With even one different player on the pitch, maybe the result and broad strokes of the game would have been the same, but the moment to moment play would have been completely different.

It doesn’t work like that, someone has already mentioned the butterfly effect.
If Sharp had played, then those chances are likely to have not even been created.

Sharp offers the least of all our strikers....it’s probable that he would have hardly touched the ball if he’d played and been the least threatening.
However of course...when set up...he’s the best striker at the club at scoring goals.

Totally agree with the OP, every season Sharp has to prove himself over and over.
You have an old car it does everything you need it to but you're flush with cash and bought one that looks better, newer, faster but you only ever go to the supermarket. Do you use the car that does exactly what you need or the one you've just blown a load of cash on? (Even though the new one, you're not comfortable with it yet).

CW said yesterday, in the Radio Sheff interview, that Billy could have come on, but it's "horses for courses" (his words) and Billy will play a big part this season.

Think he will feature more at home .thought he did really well against Leicester but the sub's yesterday all offered different things we needed to get back in the game . mcgoldrick for example helped us take control of the midfield and mousse and Robinson played the wide channels allowing runners to get in the box .not saying billy can't do that but we isolated their full backs for the first time in the game when we had those three on

We'll see Billy this season, have no fears. It's Goldy I think we'll be seeing little of. I've seen nothing in the games he's played to suggest he's up to this level. Billy's attributes stand up to those of the new signings. Goldy's don't I'm afraid.

The veteran leadership him and Jags will be offering will be worth their weight in gold!! With them two in the dressing room, you can't imagine their being too many prima-donas...

Even if the don't get game time on a Sat, the influence Mon to Fri will make Tufty's job easier!!

Sharp's got nothing to prove to anyone at Bramall Lane. We know what he is, we know what he does, and we know how to use him.

The problem is that Sharp is the worst creatively, he's not the quickest, he's not the best in the air, he's not the most skillful, he's not the best link up player, and so on. Sharp has been so good for us because we've had a lot of the ball and we've been able to pass through sides and make quality opportunities for him - that's where he's one of the best in the game.

In order to play Sharp and get the best of him, the rest of the players need to be playing well enough that we expect to hold possession and keep sustained pressure on the opponents. Right now we aren't doing that. As we find our feet there's going to be teams where we can do that, and where we'll be over the moon to have Sharp as an option, but he has to be patient and accept that we've spent a lot of money on some very talented forwards.

We'll see Sharp play this season. And if he scores at Bramall Lane he's going to go from legendary status to a bloody deity.

He would have buried some of those chances. But you've got to consider the whole picture, not just that aspect. Would the chance have even arisen, with the different set-up?
He's not going to be overlooked and will be picked by the footballing legends of CWAK in the right scenarios.
He's a legend and a few prem goals while be the icing on the cake.

In terms of his aerial prowess, are you talking about his ability from stuff lumped upfield from deep? Because I think he’s one of our better players from crosses – in fact didn’t he have the highest total of headed goals last season?

Wilder will clearly use him for certain situations. He’ll rarely start, and he’ll be rarely left off the bench, assuming everyone stays fit. Which, in all honesty, is absolutely fine.
