Billy Sharp retires

That’s an interesting point, because if you look at the top 100 EFL and PL scorers of all time many of the players come from the 1920s and 1930s where goalscoring was massively inflated by the change in the offside law which took years to bed down.

Clough was outside this era. He was 1950s and 1960s. Still a higher goalscoring era but very, very impressive numbers. Steve Bloomer, Steve Bull Jimmy Greaves and John Aldridge are also outliers in different eras. I think the point re Clough is that he did that and nobody else could do it contemporaneously (although never going to the top flight helps - a bit like with Warnocks’ Blades percentage win ratio).

so I’d agree with what you say but it irks me that it’s tied to that stupid name change. Make it this century or something.

On a similar theme, in the entire history of English league football only 28 men have scored more goals than Billy. That’s an incredible achievement, but not one that’s remarked upon.
Is Billy still the top goalscorer in the top 4 leagues this millennium? I think that was an accolade he held at one point

Yes.

Harry Kane's departure to the Bundesliga has preserved that record for a few years.

I think James Collins, who is currently on loan at Donny from Lincoln but still rehabbing an ACL injury, is the only currently registered player with over 200 league goals.

200 English league goals this century:

Billy Sharp 265
Harry Kane 227
Jordan Rhodes 220
Rickie Lambert 218
Wayne Rooney 214
James Collins 200

Jordan Rhodes will kick himself when he sees these lists because he looked certain to clear them all at one point, especially the Championship record.

73 league goals for Blackburn in three consecutive seasons was an incredible run from 2012-13 to 2014-15.

The time he spent at Wednesday pretty much extinguished his career.

Right..sorry Billy I'm going to have to stop you there as we take a call from Mark in Pitsmoor.....

"Welcome Billy, you have had a great career and are a Sheffield United legend. Anyway let's get stuck into it, do you think United's owners should pay Prince Abdullah what he is owed?"

Great show tonight , Billy honest and funny and a few revelations about the past and the future.
Some of his memories about past matches, goals and teamates made me feel why I'm a Blade and no matter what should be always be backing the team.
