Billy sharp cost us the game not Robinson

It's a free kick on half way. It's not a problem to a team who can defend competently. If we are going to shit it whenever we give away a free kick on half way we may as well just boot the ball in our own net at kick off and cut out the middle man.

It was a huge mistake by a player of Billy’s experience to give away such a daft free kick and the opportunity to launch the ball into our box , the only possible chance they had of scoring .

However , it started before that when Hourihan took the ball to the corner flag when passing options were available and then lost it .

I’ve always hated that approach and it’s not the first time it’s backfired on us .
Agree that if we are going to take the safety first approach (which really doesn’t suit us) then we should be bringing Basham on to bolster the rearguard. I’m not saying we should go gung-ho but we had openings to kill the game at 2-1 which we were reluctant to go for

For sure Billy didn't need to give Preston that free kick - everyone should just be covering and making them play backwards, but it he was a bit of a silly billy. There's was zero need to give that away.

As for Robinson and the header - no one should be defending a centre half for not heading a floated ball back the way it came - he's quite simply mistimed a header - zero excuse really. Yet another reason for a left back that shouldn't really be playing at left centre half in a two.

WE SHOULD STILL BE ABLE TO DEFEND A NOT VERY GOOD BALL FLOATED INTO OUR BOX FROM 40/50 YARDS AWAY !!!!!!

But lets be honest - we ended up playing meaningless football again for long periods because Preston were very very well organised, tough, strong and uncompromising. We moved it too slow again...........until hey presto, we moved it quicker and it's 2-1.

We are still losing points to average teams that are just better organised and more resilient to the division were playing in.

Back to the training ground and please fucking work out how to beat these very very average teams were playing.

Defending a hoofball book for dummies
1) Don't let the attackers get in behind you
2) Clear the first ball out or forwards
3) Clear the 2nd ball or be prepared for the set piece.

We knew they were going to launch it into the box since that's how they were set up we had 2 options go with the old Keown offside trap and hope the lino is still awake or we needed to be deeper although 100% Robinson fault for not clearing the header I wouldn't have minded if we had 2 players on each post if it meant the opportunity to stop the back post finish.

Billy has given away a foul on the half way line and said right boys get in position and nod this one back out.

Our defenders have gone. What? Can't hear you Billy? Oh shit!!! Whats this ball doing coming towards us?! FUCK!!!!!

Both of them had absolute braindead moments that cost us the win.

Giving away free kicks on the Halfway line, especially stupid petty fouls like that, will cost you. I'm shocked that's even a debate.

Sharp had an assist he was pulled down shoved all game long a weak ref allowed it.
Bash was always good in the last few minutes of a game against high balls into the box.
We will always have trouble against high balls against a big team. How can our little midfielders Norwood,Fleck Freeman,Ozzy be expected to outduel bigger players when it is launched into our box.
Only fleck in those four on when they launched it and scored

Sharp did nothing second half he was blowing out of his arse he should have been subbed well before he gave away the free kick that cost us the points
Robinson will cost us many goals and points this season if slav continues to play him. Billy will gain us many points and goals this season if slav continues to play him.

Let's be fair whilst it was a foul it was a soft one. Yes he didn't need to go in for it but he was trying to win back possession too.

We still should defend it better.
Seen Robinson misjudge them before sadly. That's where you want Egan or Joc heading away. Heck even Mcburnie too. Shame of course.

Of the 5 added mins we controlled 4mins 15 of them. Could have scored another in that time without exposing ourselves too.

Think it's harsh to pin it on Robinson. And very harsh to pin it on Sharp. Both should do a bit better there though

Oh come on, what’s the chances of a free kick from the half line ending up in the net? Less than a corner I’d say, and no one has a problem with giving away those.

Well Billy could have done nothing, let them keep up the tempo and get a cross in the counter.

Then what would we be saying? why didn't Billy gave away a cheeky foul and slow the game down.
He could've put pressure on without barging into their player. Look, we all know Robinson is not up to standard and absolutely he is culpable defensively but Billy has to be a bit smarter there.

We should be able to defend a ball from the half way line. If we can't then we ain't going to have much to look forward to.

Billy Sharp did the right thing stop the counter attack slow the game down, all they had to was head the ball & defend 1 attack . they couldnt do that

So we’ve fucked up in this scenario twice in 4 seasons. How many goals have we conceded from corners in that time?

What is this corners Straw Man? The ball was on the half way line, our captain committed a snide little foul and gave Preston the chance to load the box and launch the ball forward.

If Sharp had to either a) blast the ball 45 yards out for a corner or b) give a moronic little nudge to a Preston player, I might agree that the Free Kick was the better option.

Yes we should. Absolutely agree. But, sometimes that will go wrong and you'll concede. If you were an experienced striker defending a 2-1 lead going into the final minute would you not think it better to avoid that risk entirely by avoiding giving away that soft free kick entirely... Billy didn't need to concede the free kick there. He's old enough and ugly enough to know better. Should lots of other things have also not happened, definitely, agree with you entirely there. But Billy as Captain has some responsibly to be a bit smarter there.

"Partly" agree with the OP.

Sharp is paid to score goals and he missed a fantastic chance, the header around 10mins. That goes in, we're 2 up and there's no way back.

Then the foul he gave away on the halfway for their equaliser wasn't necessary IMO.

To say he did nothing though is incorrect. He wasn't as effective as he was on Saturday, he was marked out of the game for most parts. I thought McBurnie may have been a better option against those CBs.

Was taken more like 38 yards out too but even so should have been defended. Chris Morgan in his prime would have smashed that into row Z.
Chris Morgan right now at 43 years old would have headed that ball into row Z. Infact, anyone else in the ground other than that fanny Robinson would have headed it in row Z!

In the post match analysis, Morgan loaded the blame on to billy too.
