Billy and Pens

It was, but I've been watching United for 25 years and never seen one saved in the manner it was yesterday.

A couple of weeks ago a keeper stood still for a penalty in a similar way in a lower division game - I forget which - and almost got his head taken off by the shot

So Sharp answers his critics and plays really well and scores a shed load of goals. Certain Blades fans then think, hmmmm we can't have our top scorer, captain and talisman getting away without criticism. Let's find something else to slag him off about.

Ffs lads he missed a pen that ended up not costing us. Remember Gillingham in the 90th minute? Personally I wouldn't have wanted anyone else in the current squad stepping up under that much pressure.

No doubt at the end of the season when we are promoted and Sharp has scored 30 someone on here will ask for him to be sold because of the shoes he wore to the end of year awards ceremony:

Haha I enjoyed that LRB, nothing changes does it mate?

We seem to spend half our lives as Blades bemoaning the fact that we haven't got a 'natural goal scorer', and whenever we do get a good-un, we spend the other half of our lives debating why he's not as good as the goal charts suggest, because he misses too many chances or is flattered becuase he takes the pens.

For Sharp read Beattie, for Beattie read Blackman. ;)

I had a feeling he would miss yesterday as he's blasted everyone this season straight down the keepers neck.

I noticed after his missed last season he reverted to Baxters method of blasting it high into the net, though Baxter used to aim it in the corner more giving the keeper no chance (I don't think he ever missed one for us).

I'd still keep Billy on penalty duty, I don't thing any of the others would be anymore convincing.

He's not brilliant is he. I told my mate if the keeper stands his ground Billy's missing this. He just seems to smash them and hope for the best. I can see why he's on them though as, aside from pens, he's the best finisher in the team.

Now you mention it, don't you think his boots were a bit blue-ish yesterday?

And he calls himself a Blade!

Danny. And others.

If you look back, you would struggle to find a bigger advocate of Sharp than myself. I was one of a very select few that was supportive at the beggining of the season, seeing what others clearly could not see (or would not see) he was ACTUALLY bringing to the side in terms of all round contribution.

But I'll stand by my assessment of his penalty teckers, which is made over more than a knee jerk reaction to yesterday's miss.

Baxter missed one at Crewe 2 seasons ago. Hit it low to the keepers leftbut the keeper pushed it away.

I can see why you would, yesterday's penalty wasn't a good one and in fairness 7/10 isn't a great record (it's not too bad though either). But I also stand by the fact that I wouldn't have wanted anyone else standing up to take a 90th minute pressure penalty.

Billy scares me to death with penalties no variation just blasting it down the middle is really not good enough, any keeper has a good chance of saving it because they know where he is going to put it. If a player mixes it up it becomes much harder for the keeper, the best penalty takers place a firm shot just inside the post which no keeper saves without moving before the ball is kicked.

As I was saying.......

Going down the middle is a 'no risk' option.

You've got to work that option by putting at least your previous one penalty to either side - the keepers will all do their homework, especially with an established penalty taker.

Not only had Billy gone down the middle with his last penalty, but at 1-0 up at home against 10 men it wasn't a crucial moment and he could afford to take more of a risk and give himself the safe option of going down the middle next time, when it might be far more important.

Now he won't dare go down the middle next time, it could be a more important moment and I'd give him a good chance of missing.

Well done Billy. Clever lad.

I'm not digging at Sharp but it's clear that he shouldn't be on penalties.

His technique is very much hit and hope. If the keeper guesses right he saves it. Simple as that.

The only question is who takes them? I'm not aware that any of the other players have taken penalties in the past.

L1 top scorer stuff aside. And putting the side ahead of personal goals / targets.

It's time to come off pens fella.

We have better dead ball specialists who should be on pens.

Hit and hope just isn't good enough I'm afraid.

Not a criticism. Probably Tuftys first name on team sheet and rightly so.

its tuesday night and how right you were!!

Perm any 1 from Coutts, Fleck, Duffs and possibly even Lafferty. All tasked with dead ball plays in certain areas of the pitch, so why not from 12y ????????
