How many 'informed neutrals' will have actually seen Utd and Donny more than a couple of times this season ?
You are relying on the supporters of the teams who are biased (including me) and those idiots on Radio Sheffield who do seem to suck up to everything Doncaster and slag off everything Sheff Utd.
I have seen this 'pure football' in small cameos against us ,when to be honest Whiston Wildcats could have done it against our shower, other than that I have seen a lot of aimless hoofing and safety first both at the Keepmoat and the Lane.
C'mon Sitters, I appreciate BBC RS are biased as hell (as well as contradictory, defensive and annoying to boot) but you have to agree that its not just a localised opinion we're talking about here.
To say its bias for Donny (and as per your comment, against United) ignores the fact that they still defend United and Blackwell to the hilt when fans ring up in their droves to complain about the football and tactics on display.
Yes they wax lyrical about Donny's lovely passing style (as they should), but they also defend our less attractive (but relatively efficient) style too, especially so by defending Blackies bad luck with injuries and lack of budget (yet fail to spot the contradiction when a manager like SOD can play a attacking, progressive style with a much lesser budget at Donny - but thats another argument!)
However, the support and admiration for Donny and SOD has come from a much wider audience than the South Yorkshire boundries.
Every other week i see, read and hear the same things about their performances, from the likes of Radio 5 live, the Sky Sports Soccer Specials, The Football League Show, the Sunday papers and other fans in general - its not just a case of local bias, and its no coincidence that they all mooch up about their style of play - its a fact that generally they play a style of football rarely seen anywhere else in this league, never mind just Bramall Lane. I think only West Brom (who have benefitted from £millions from past PL promotions etc) play any sort of football which comes close, and had Donny a smidgin of thier budget I suspect they may have been able to come a lot closer to trying to match them.
They may not have shown it in any great spell against us (although i thought they dominated us 1st half Saturday and were still as good if not better than us at the lane, and last year outclassed us at the lane and we robbed them at their place) but likewise you wouldn't judge us to be relegation fodder (which despite the mediocraty about us we are not in danger of just yet!) based on our losses at Peterborough and Scunny, nor would class Leeds as a better side than Man U based on one win at OT - especially in cases where matches (like ours this weekend) were classed as a 'derby'.
The evidence suggests that they play a good style of play, and in terms of resources, are showing they are £ for £, more capable than us at producing eye-catching, attacking, pasing football, and as such proving SOD capable of getting the best from his players as they are certainly 'over'performing (or performing to thier maximum more like), whereas the arguments have been that Blackwell is underachieving with the resources at his disposal (even though they have diminished they still dwarf the likes of Donny, Barnsley, Blackpool, Coventry, Swansea etc), illustrated by the lack of success in getting the best out of his players (a la Cotts, Billy, Ched, Hendo to an extent, and lately Yeates).
I too question whether he would have the time or support required to do a similar job at BDTBL, and would the pressure of (unwarrented) expectation hinder him and make him change his style of play - just like Blackwell has done after a good start where we enjoyed 6 months of nice, high-intensity, progressive football post-Robson, only to see him revert on this by flogging all ideas of using width, pace, flair and attacking nouse in exchange for solid, defensive, % football in the hope of out muscling and forcing wins through dogged determination.
However, it is undeniable to say that Donny (and so SOD) are better at playing a certain style of football than United, and are outperforming United based on thier league position in contrast to their resources, based solely on their performances in just two local derbies.
UTB!
