Not sure if this has been mentioned but I just want to say a big thumbs up to Wilder on realising that he has made a mistake with certain players and rectifies the issues immediately. Long and Hussey were the two weakest links in the first 4 games and it looks like they have already been replaced.

It stands us in good stead if we have a manager who is ruthless enough to make these changes so early. One of Adkins downfall was his persistence in players who were clearly not good enough to play for this club (its a long list) and his stubbornness to not change it.

All in all I think we have had a good window. We still lack a midfield player in my opinion but I think some of the Basham criticism is a bit harsh. I am not his biggest fan but I don't think he is as bad as everyone says and his energy and work rate would be missed if we took him out of the side.

Win on Sunday and the negativity surrounding the team may slowly start to diminish.

Adkins would have been ridiculed for replacing a player he brought in after a couple of weeks.

Your right. However he would have got more respect from the fans by admitting the mistake making it right. All managers pass and fail in the transfer market. The good managers are the ones who realise they have got it wrong and change it.

Has Hussey been replaced, or have we in fact just got another option at left back? Chances are of course that Lafferty will come straight in, but it just shows that as Wilder has said a few times, he wants competition for places. And until yesterday there wasn't in that position. Which on the basis of Hussey's performances thus far was a real problem.

The fact is, not every signing will be a success. No manager ever has managed this. But I'm optimistic that the majority will over time improve the team and we'll move to the right end of the table.

One more midfielder would have been nice, but we do have plenty of options to choose from. I'm not convinced that those suggested yesterday would have had the impact to improve on what we already have. However, I do like the idea of a more defensively minded player to protect the back four and push Fleck into a more advanced position.

Lafferty will come straight in - he'll be on decent wages I think.

But yes, in the main quite happy with how Wilder has done his business. As you say, replacing those areas that have been weak will stand us in good stead. I also agree on the midfielder point, we still seem to lack someone to drive the game forward with creativity, hopefully Fleck may be able to become that player. I don't see a long-term role for Basham (nor Coutts for that matter). If only we could combine the two of them!

Id much rather a manager realise his mistakes and rectify them rather than persevering all season out of stubbornness.

Luckily Wilder has an understanding Board, that allows for under-performance over a few games to be the trigger for getting in a replacement (if that is indeed what has actually been done)

I have no idea. My point was in response to the posters claiming it is Wilder showing great management by replacing one of his own signings a few weeks into the season. But you have made the point better than I! :)

Agreed

He's also significantly strengthened in virtually every area too .

All we need to do is give an almost brand new first 11 time to ' click ' and the future looks far more promising than any of the last 4 seasons .

Will they be given this time ? Well , judging by the knee jerk shit that this site is awash with , I seriously doubt it .

There's a few words I'd use to describe our board gut 'understanding' isn't up there.

Setting myself up to be shot at... but since it is a Forum...

The Board, while not giving him the funds to get Championship ready players, have backed him for a greater number of signings, despite his record to date with some has been hit and miss. For all the talk of them being trigger happy, it could be argued they are in fact, backing him.

Apart from selling better players, but even then, was Wilder complicit in that?

After how many weeks into the season??

(although, as said by others, Wilder may not in fact be replacing Hussey)

For all the talk of how many he's been able to bring in, how many did we let go?

If we didn't sign a large number of players we wouldn't have had a team!

And I'm willing to bet every single player brought in was on less wages than the ones we jettisoned.

Wasn't this the remit?

Reduce a bloated squad and bring down the wage bill?

How can anyone say the board have backed Wilder? We have pulled in £3m + and got rid of the high wage earners but only spent around £500k - £750k tops

In pounds and pence? True.

Are you saying the squad is now weaker in a playing sense?

Or should we have made sure we spent every last penny on more expensive players?

I could be wrong (its not an uncommon occurrence!) but Wilder's early days, transfer wise, are very much in the mould of Bassett's.

I'm sure he also had a large turnover of players and was very much of the thinking that if a player isn't doing it then they will be replaced, regardless of stature or who signed them.

Anyone remember or got any details of Bassett's early transfers?

And how many can say that that's not exactly what we knew would happen this season . Wilders mentioned it ad nauseum .

So why the indignant surprise now that we've done it ?

Quite rightly so. Adkins was bringing players in a 8-10k per week. He absolutely had to be getting them right at that level of salary.

Wilder is bringing them in at 2-5k per week. He's bound to get one or two who don't hit the ground running.

Yes maybe, but Adkins continued to piss down our collective necks and tell us it was raining. Wilder has acted swiftly. He knows you don't get long here and you are only judged on your last set of results. Where as Adkins traded off is "legendary" CV for too long.

What's Hussey's weekly wage?

The time frame is irrelevant, I could tell after watching the first half against Southend and Oxford that Hussey is garbage.

Except central midfield.

The reality is we have sold anyone who was saleable, managed to offload a few others to ease the wage bill, spent very little on players of dubious quality (GK excepted), got a couple of loans in (one of whom is coming back from a fairly long injury and is described as the black Collins) and are left with a squad which, if we are lucky, is hardworking if not particularly talented. Central midfield we are going to have rely on one of the most unreliable of players in recent seasons (except James Wallace - was hoping Fleetwood would take him rather than Kieran) in Coutts, god help us (no doubt his fan club will be happy about that but I, for one, remain unconvinced as to his match-winning abilities, commitment and long term fitness) and in Basham who isn't a particularly good destroyer and cannot pass or head a ball with any real ability or direction.

He's made mistakes in keeping Long and buying Hussey (the lad can't defend - this was clear from the Derby friendly) and that has cost us in other areas as a consequence. The Sharpe/Clarke partnership looks dodgy and our options there are now more limited. Not particularly inspiring stuff. I was hoping that we would get rid of 3 or 4 of the dross and replace them with 1 or 2 of quality. Sadly it seems to me this transfer window was more about cost cutting than team building.

Wilder is getting a more sympathetic reaction because of his Blade credentials, but that will wear thin very quickly if he doesn't get us up the table and challenging for promotion. I fear its going to be a real dour grind this season.

Let's take a moment to look at the squad .......Goalkeeper definate improvement, back four ..........a back up right back, a decent on paper CB if he can keep his hands down and two loan players looks about as good as last season a big question mark for them. Midfield ...... Fleck looks decent otherwise we are woefully shite in this area and up front we could be slightly better than what we had last season.
I'm not saying we should spend evey penny just for the sake of it but everyone can see we have missed a number of our target bykeeping cash firmly in the bank Wilder has had to sell before he could recruit.

No surprise here we do it every year same owd same owd
