Best Sheffield United side in my lifetime?

Agree....that Wilder league 1 team is easily the best football I've seen us produce probably followed by Danny Wilson div 1 team.

The thing I found weird when watching that Wilder league 1 team was

If we conceded an early goal I had this smug warm feeling inside that their goal didn't matter because we would still win.
In fact I kind of enjoyed seeing the opposition go 1-0 up because I could then see how the team would react.
It made it more of a competition because some games in league 1 were so one sides it was embarrassing, at the times the opposition rarely crossed the halfway line.
That's funny, I didn't think that happened from memory, so had a think and you're spot on, northampton, scunthorpe x 2, oxford x 2, charlton, oldham, bury, chesterfield, fleetwood, gillingham, rochdale, didn't lose any.

Despite it being only November and despite being let down many times over the years I was pretty confident even then that the team was more than capable of promotion...... a very strange feeling for a Blade.
It was the Port Vale 4-0 home win that did it for me...the one where we had 4 goals disallowed.
After that game I actually felt emotional because it clicked that the league 1 team under Wilder was way above league 1 level and we would finally be promoted.
At no stage last season did I even think we could achieve promotion but this season I've already seen enough to suggest we should make top 2.

My comments about the Wilder teams are slightly contradictory. I wish to explain that it's the league 1 team that played Man City esque football at times, it was almost boring because there was little contest and you were just waiting for us to score.

In the Championship and PL we weren't as expansive but played some incredibly efficient well drilled football based on a brilliant defence + goalie.
We only needs to score 1 or maybe 2 goals and we were virtually gauranteed to win.
Wilder PL team seems to have an inner belief that they could go any where and win.
In that 1st season we were the better team away at Arsenal, Spurs and even matched Man City in a close game.
For me the Wilder era ended at the Liverpool away match...we gave them too much respect....defended in numbers and were pretty much outclassed.
Our confidence was never the same after that game and we seemed to be more defensive....sitting back and hoping to hit on the counter.

I’m 52, so not exactly in my lifetime but I since I started going. I started going when we were in the 4th Division. Since then we’ve seen some real shit, some real grafters, some real promise and then back to being shit again.

I honestly can’t remember a side as balanced, as gifted and hard working as this one, we’ve often had the hard working bit but have we ever had all three of those qualities at the same time? This side is better than the one that did so well in the Premier League in my opinion.

When we’ve a fully fit squad the quality and depth is unreal. The feeling of reaching the Premier League under Warnock and Wilder was amazing of course but I’ve never had so much confidence in a team as I do this one.

Or perhaps I’ve had one too many?
Waiting for Bogle to return, also think Jack Robinson has “ something”. Lowe obviously. Squad feels younger and fresher than previously. All this young talent coming through. If Hecky strengthens in January, and with Khadra, McAtee, Doyle, Gordon, Jebbo, great times ahead. Owe all this to CWAK who lifted the club and gave us two seasons in the Prem. I think Hecky is just a chance discovery, as if all the stars are aligned or something, until we lose to Preston and then they’re all shit again 😂.

Ok my favourite team of all time was the 1970/71 team so here’s my comparison:
Hope/ Wes. Wes
Badger/ Baldock. Badger (One of the all time greats
Hemsley/ RND. RND ( based on last night)
Flynn/ Anel. Anel ( by some distance)
Colquhoun/ Egan. Egan (just)
Hockey/ Norwood. Norwood ( just)
Woodward/ Anyone in todays team no comparison Woody by a mile
Salmons/ As above Salmons was amazing
Deardon/ Illy. Probably Illy for pure skill
Currie/Berge. Currie: because he was an absolute genius and I love the guy. My favourite player of all time. I loved watching him home and away.
Reece/ We don’t have a left winger so Reece :)
So here’s the team
Wes
Badger
RND
Anel
Egan
Norwood
Woodward
Salmons
Illy
Currie
Reece

Current team wins 6 5 but the 5 from 70/71 were amazing!

Wilder’s team were a team. Probably better than the individual parts. But as the last season in the PL showed we didn’t have the player who on his own could produce the individual brilliance that would turn a game. Virtually all PL teams have that. Now I think we have the team we had under Wilder but with individuals capable of brilliance that will win games in a moment. That turns one point into three like against Swansea
