Was discussing over the weekend opposition players that would get into our team from League one. We played Scunny and Bolton and I didn't think any would get into our team?

So which league one players would be able to come and start for us and who would drop out ?

My view is If it ain't broken don't mend it
I think we have enough to do the jpb

I'm not sure about necessarily getting in our first team, but good additions to the squad would be:

- Josh Morris at Scunny (18 goals from midfield is unreal)
- Duane Holmes at Scunny (tricky, pact winger, scored against us at their place but didn't figure against us at ours)
- Jay Spearing from Bolton (for added bite)
- David Wheater at Bolton
- Neil Etheridge, goalkeeper at Walsall
- Otzumer at Walsall as a direct replacement for Duffy
- Ched (if fit and firing)

I also like Fleetwood's central defensive pairing.

Possibly the Walsall keeper and that little foreign sounding dude who plays attacking midfielder (probably not the latter on reflection as we alreday have Carruthers and O'Shea), Paddy Madden has always struck me as a decent goalscorer. Darren Pratley at Bolton was a v good player but not sure what he's like now post long term injury and he is now knocking on a bit football wise. Gregory and Webster at Millwall are decent players along with Holmes the winger at Charlton. Also thought that Fleetwood had some solid defenders who did the basics well and cleared their lines time and again.

Not sure me sen on Josh Morris. Just think he was having a one season wonder where everything he touched flew into the back of the net. Not a bad player but I'm not sure I'd want Utd to sign him. Think there's better players at better value out there to be had.

Morris is having a great season, goals and assists.

But he was average in both games against us, and despite playing wide he doesn't really have a lot of pace or tricks.
I think he's had a season like Brown did, where nearly everything he hit went in.

Goalkeepers: Neil Etheridge, Connor Ripley, Luke Daniels, Jordan Archer

Defenders: Byron Webster, Murray Wallace, Mark Beevers, David Wheater, Jason Pearce, George Baldock, Conor McLaughlin, James Meredith, Amari'i Bell, Joe Edwards, Ben Coker, Mahlon Romeo

Midfielders: Josh Vela, Chris Forrester, Josh Cullen, Jay Spearing, Romain Vincelot, Marcus Maddison, Erhun Oztumer, Stephen McLaughlin, Ben Reeves, Josh Morris, Nicky Law, Ricky Holmes, Callum Camps

Attackers: Lee Gregory, James Vaughan, Rob Hall, Paddy Madden, Ched Evans (if he sorts himself out?)

I'd say Oztumer's been the most impressive against us. Based on those performances he should be playing in the Champions League.

Noticeable shortage of quality strikers.

There will also be plenty I haven't mentioned, some who I suspect I should have included but others I don't know about too.

+1 Oztumer.

Thought we should have gone for him in the summer, but Duffy has exceeded expectations after a poor start on the wing and now Carruthers looks like he could be a better signing long-term. Oztumer has had an excellent season though and was class against us in the home league game, as he was for Peterborough last season.

No direspect mate but I wouldn't want any of those.
Think you'll find Carruthers is Duffys replacement. Wilder has as much as said so.

None taken. I take the view that they would improve our squad, not necessarily make the team.

Otzumer does have 13 goals from midfield though this season and is a good player.

Otzumer would be a slight upgrade on Duffy IMO but not so much that i would break the bank to get him and Carruthers looked impressive again on Saturday when he came on so we might have the upgrade already.

Barring that i wasnt that impressed with Morris last week and there wasnt really anyone in the Bolton team i would take over ours.

I think we'll be back in for Webster in the summer whatever division we're in and can see him going for Gregory as well.

I don't think either of the Millwall players are good enough to start in the Championship, although Gregory could be decent back up for Billy.

Fleck, Coutts, Duffy, Carruthers, OShea (if he signs permanently) have the midfield covered and I think I both Freeman and Lafferty will be good enough. Moore will be OK, as will JOC and Billy.

That leaves significant strengthening to be done at centre back (EEL+ one) as I don't think Wright will be good enough a level higher. We will need a proven goalscorer alongside Billy as I fear Hanson will only be good enough for the bench. Finally we will near one, if not two, pacy widemen.

Not a bad shout that.

But don't forget the Chris Wilder factor.

I get the impression we only need to buy half decent league 1 players
Then let Wilder and Knill spend a few weeks with them and they quickly turn into top players.

I get the feeling the likes of Fleck, Coutts, Duffy, Freeman, Sharp and Hanson could leave us to play in another league 1 side and they'd all become very ordinary average league 1 players.

Wilder seems to know how to get the best out of his players and gell them into an excellent team.
Every player has clear instructions and know how they fit into the team structure.

and I think I both Freeman and Lafferty will be good enough.

I reckon this is United's weakest link to be honest. If we persist with 3-5-2 then Freeman is not good enough as a full back and Lafferty is not good enough as a wing back. 4-4-2 however allows Freeman to play wide midfield and Lafferty purely as a full back. I think this will be the preferred option otherwise Wilder wouldn't have converted Lafferty's loan to a full time deal.

Did Josh Morris even touch the ball against us the other week? Obviously having a good season with 18 goals but i'm not sure he's anything more than a one season wonder.

Gregory would be ok as back up for Sharp, Webster would be fine in a back 3 with a leader next to him.

Don't think EEL will be back due to cost and form recently so a replacement would be needed plus a leader to replace Wright probably.

Midfield is absolutely fine i agree unless any leave.

IMO would need at least a couple of strikers as Done and McShitly probably won't be here leaving only Billy and Lavery. Hanson has been perfect for the role he was bought for this season but can't see anything but an impact sub in the Champ. Clark will leave and join his 300th Club.

Trying to come up with a "Best of the Rest" to compare against our own...

(same 3-5-2 formation)

1. Daniels (Scunny)

4. Bolger (Fleetwood)
5. Thompson (Southend)
6. Wallace (Scunny)

2. Baldock (MK)
7. Spearing (Bolton)
8. Leonard (Southend)
11. Morris (Scunny)
3. Meredith (Bradford)

9. Gregory (Millwall)
10. Ball (Fleetwood)

That's my issue. I know there are good players in this division only few I could see was Maddison ahead of Duffy. Maybe Otzumer too.

But I wouldn't choose anyone ahead of Coutts / Fleck from this division. Sharp is the best striker in the league.

I haven't seen anything spectacular in this division that I would be like we have to sign him.

He's always looked good when I've seen him and I was surprised he only went to Walsall from Peterborough. It's a step backwards really. I wonder if there's something I've missed. I know he's a short arse but that shouldn't be the reason alone. Is he crap positionally, or doesn't work off the ball or something like that?
Or does he flatter to deceive? His goal record suggests not. Has the Walsall manager found a role for him that he didn't have at Posh? Will he end up being one of those who looks good at Walsall but then moves and looks a bit lightweight?

I have no idea.

I do know however that he's impressed me every time I've seen him (including for P'boro). It's quite easy to spot how he performs in a game just because of the height issue and because he looks so unusual in comparison to his competitors.

He's a gifted number 10 and I think he could play the Duffy role.

I don't understand why we didn't go for Oztumer really. Wilder wanted Ricky Holmes to play the 10 role but he cost a good fee, whereas Oztumer was available on a free. I suppose it depends if Wilder had plans for Duffy as a number 10 - if he did then maybe that's why we didn't sign someone like Oztumer, but if not then we should have signed someone for that role, and he's a specialist there.

This would probably be my non Blades 11 anyway:

Etheridge

Baldock Webster Beevers Bell

Vela Forrester

Reeves Oztumer Maddison

Vaughan

Can't believe Peterborough had Forrester, Oztumer and Maddison last season and still did fuck all. And this season they're arguably underachieving even more.

A best from the rest for me:

Etheridge

Baldock
Bolger
Wheater
Coker

Vela
Forrester

Reeves
Oztumer
Morris

Vaughan

And it still wouldn't beat ours
