As the numbers get higher, the choices get fewer...

Notes on the players:

Montgomery: was 36 in his first season, then 22 in 01-02, 12 in 02-03, 4 2003-05, 17 2005-09 and 4 again 2009-12.

Killeen: made one sub appearance at the end of 01-02 as 36. Was then 27 in 02-03.

Horwood: was 36 in the promotion season when he played in the League Cup. Was then 32 in 07-08.

Ross: was 36 in 07-08, but didn't make an appearance that season. Had been 28 in 03-04 and 22 2004-06.

Foster: Academy forward who was on the bench for the last game of 09-10, but never made a first team appearance

Harriott: was 36 when he played a few times in the relegation season. Was then no. 18 2011-13.

i think a few of us voted for diego for a goof sorry

25 minutes looking half decent is better than the numerous rubbish games Curtis played.

Curtis did ok for us. Played the last couple of months in the triple assault season (probably the best squad in recent years). He played in an FA Cup semi-final and a 2 x play off semi & play off final for us.

Didn't we try to sign him but he ended up going to the premiership instead?!

What has Diego done? Oh yeah. He's Italian... I'm not saying Diego De Girolamo isn't a good player as he is extremely highly rated but 3 substitute appearances doesn't warrant a vote

and if we'd managed to keep Jon Harley (not good enough to make this squad apparently) we'd have been promoted that season. Both Quinn W and Curtis were far less effective in the 02-03 season than Harley.
Diego for me, none of the others are anywhere near good enough.

I think you should start having a "none of the above deserve a place in the squad" option.
Players are just getting in by default now and it's daft having the likes of Curtis and Ullathorne in a "Best of" squad.

I hate curtis he got anally trsumatised at cardiff v wolves

Curtis played RB not LB. After Harley and Quinn left, Kozluk played LB.

If Diego was called Matthew Smith or something like that then he wouldn't have a vote.

And as for Jon Harley - yes, he was a great player. We also saw his best games in the dozen or so games at the start of the 02/03 season but that doesn't outweigh Derek Gearys 5 years with us.

It is unfortunate that Harley didn't make the team as I really liked him but the game that Darren has started is the best player to wear the number. John Curtis granted would be in our top 40 players since 1999 but, because he wore a shit number, he gets votes.

I doubt we're ever going to agree on this Matt but I'll explain myself again.

1. I base my vote on Diego on how he shaped up when I saw him and without any regard for his name, his haircut or the colour of his boots. You can see class in some players immediately they touch the ball (the two Kyles being good recent examples and I thought Coady on his Notts Co performance was going to be the same) and the lad has the required "look" about him. He may turn out to be shit but the evidence of my own eyes leads me to think otherwise (injury notwithstanding).
Now if I'd have rated any of the other names on the list, his cameo would have been "not enough", as it is, IT IS (piss poor English going on here I'm afraid) as both Montgomery and Curtis could never be described as good players in my book.

2. I missed Dazzler starting this series off as I was on holiday and so I kind of take "best player" to mean exactly that, if there was something at the outset that said "not as good a player but a great servant" then sorry I missed it but I'm happy to debate Harley being a "better player" than Geary all day long.
For instance if we'd have signed Marradona in '78 and given him the No 10 shirt , then being my favourite player in the world would not save TC from being ousted by "a better player" overall. As it is we got Sabella and, much as I loved him too, he would never replace TC.

Basically, Darren has done this for all numbers and has kindly pointed out which seasons they wore the shirt in and shown which players never actually wore the shirt on the pitch too.

As an example of this - Would you consider James Beattie a better player than Lyle Taylor? I think the answer is yes. However, Beattie's best days for us were in the #6 or #9 shirt.

The voting process set out by Darren is their time in that actual shirt.

Now when James Beattie wore #10 for us he played 18 games, scored no goals and was sent off twice.

Lyle Taylor has played 14 games and scored 2 goals. Therefore in the number 10 shirt Lyle Taylor is better - he's not a better player than James Beattie... well, he probably is now but you get what i'm saying.

Therefore John Curtis gave a lot more in the 36 shirt than De Girolamo has.

For the record, De Girolamo will be a fantastic player and I hope he is with us for many years to come. However, he is still out injured, there's no confirmed date as to when he's back and when he is back will take a long time to regain full fitness etc. His best days at SUFC might not be in the 36 shirt as he may be given a better number next year when he could be an established first teamer.
