Looking at 8 players for the 3/4 attacking positions. Still not sure our best formation or who's our best options available? ^

i still think that 433 would be our strongest side. Hope we get to see something like this before the season ends

One - Bamford - Donnovan
Peck ——————Arblaster
———— Philips —————
Burrows - kitching - Tanganga - Seriki
Cooper

Last night gave me hope that Peck and Arblaster could work if they were both allowed to look forward a bit more often. Having Philips sit in and Ollie and Peck in more box to box roles could result in us actually playing nice football through the middle

I'd swap Burrows for McCallum, but other than that 👍

Not sure what our best formation is, Wilder has said he's prepared to change it but it looks like we'll stick with 4-4-2, particularly with Ayew coming in.

BBD left mid, Donovan right, Bamford and Campbell up front probably our best. Would like to see One get decent minutes once he's fit if our other strikers don't find any form.

I think maybe just do it alphabetically, start with ABC BBA, , then BBC , , BCD , CCA, , CCC , loads of permutations, One might struggle for minutes a bit but it's probably no worse than wilders scattergun approach

Bamford, Oné and Donovan

3 at the back - Tanganga, Kitching, McCallum

Seriki and Burrows wing back, Peck and Phillips CM

Donovan drifting from side to side

Everything's on hold until Seriki gets back. We shouldn't have been in that situation

Got to commit to 5 at the back for me after today. Especially after the Stoke game where we have 3 full weeks to work on the shape and refine it. Doesn’t have to be so static in terms of attacking but the basis has to be 5 at the back IMO - it helps hides the frailties of Tanganga and McGuinness (it’s why Egan, Wright, Bash all looked good because they had cover). Whether that means some games we play 3 in midfield (Phillips, Peck, and Arblaster) with 2 up top, or in other games 2 in midfield with a striker and 2 wide players. All I want is to never see 442 again…

Where do the chances and goals come from? I think 5 at the back makes us predictable easy to play agsinst, ive noticed last few games the opposition always have 2 players agsinst our full backs. We are too narrow in my opinion

For me, 4-3-3, with Phillips deeper and Peck and Arblaster further forward.

Keep those together and for a change up we switch to 5-3-2. One extra centre back, push full backs on more.

Relatively simple to switch between the two.

I liked the way Kitching got forward today as well.

Obviously the below requires everyone to be fit & firing...

GK: Cooper

DR: Tanganga

DC: McGuinness

DL: Kitching

RWB: Seriki

LWB: Burrows

DM: Phillips

MC: Peck

MC: Arblaster

AM (Duffy Role) Donovan

ST: One

Pros:

  • Gets the most out of Seriki & Burrow’s talents going forward, whilst offering plenty of defensive solidity through the back 3 and Phillips
  • Peck is playing himself into form & Arblaster is starting to look like the promising player he was before injury, both have looked weak when played as a midfield 2 before, but with Phillips and Donovan around them for defensive/attacking support they should shine
  • Donovan in the Duffy role would give him license to cause mayhem, which he seems more than capable of
  • One as the central striker gives us two different outlets, as he’s both fast and huge. He looks dangerous.
Cons:

  • Even with Phillips and Donovan there for support and outlets… Peck and Arblaster are still small CMs who will get bullied by a lot of the division’s bruisers.
  • I love the Duffy role and think it’s a shame we dropped it in general. But it definitely works a lot better with two strikers… but we haven’t got the strength in midfield to afford that.
  • Whilst exciting, One is unproven at this level, and with his massive frame and explosive pace I think he’ll constantly suffer muscle injuries like Moose, Micah Richards, Gareth Bale etc before him.
Overall though I think this would give us the identity that we've been lacking, and highlight some of our strengths, whilst hiding some of our glaring weaknesses.
