Best Blades' Debuts

Currie's goal was definitely a header.

Des Hamilton's debut, mentioned earlier, was against Barnsley, I think. Wayne Quinn scored our goal, direct from a free kick

Mine is Jonas Wirmola, who made his debut against Wimbledon and John Fashanu and Wirmola was immense. I felt sure we'd unearthed a world beater, but 8 games later, he was gone......

Think Wirmola went to have Fash surgically removed from his back pocket - no idea why he didn't come back.

Borbokis had a great one as did Davidson.

Not sure if it was his debut but the first time I saw Jags at right back I stated that we have finally found a replacement for Mr Badger.

His debut was at Wednesday on 21/4/93 when he did indeed come as sub. His full debut was that Chelsea game, when he tapped in from 6 inches, he only got the one though.

Rogers got the second and Whitehouse the 3rd and 4th either side of half time.

Also Deano's last game in his first spell...

Surely for the all the hysteria surrounding his arrival into the country , got to touch the great man's hand when he was introduced to us at the Lane as well , Alex Sabella , great corner , shit season , set up the great goal v sun land which was runner up in the goal of the month ( doffs his cap in Darren's direction for that info .)

It's stretching a point but Sabella's first goal for United (in his third game) was fantastic. On a sunny day at Deepdale he received the ball about thirty yards out, dribbled past two or three Preston defenders, burst into the box and took it round the keeper before slotting it home from a narrow angle in front of the ecstatic, disbelieving Blades hordes. The game ended 2-2 but anything seemed possible at that stage. Unfortunately, as dublin says, the rest of the season was far from great.

Andy Sayer, 2-0 down at home v spurs, he came on and we scored 2 in the last 5 minutes with goals from Beasley and someon else, happy days. Oh not sure if Sayer touched the ball.

Going back to 1970 / 1971 the Blades were stuck for the third successive season in a division lower than they expected (sound familiar). On January 28th 1971 (well before transfer window days) we signed Trevor Hockey, David Ford and John Hope. We also sold John Tudor on the same day. I know the previous weekend we had lost at Oxford and the season was really going off the rails. I am not sure if all three players made their debut on the same day but those signings were inspired as we eventually got promotion that season and well, we had some great days in the top flight up to the relegation in 1976. In my opinion Nigel Clough will prove to be the best Blades manager since John Harris and I hope those three signings last week will be the start of us moving back up the leagues just as those signings were 43 years ago tomorrow.

On the season video, the commentator says something like "it may only be 6", but it'll mean a lot to him" :-)

Never forgot that brilliant goal. It was like you described apart from the finish. Sabella flicked the ball through the legs of Preston's keeper Roy Tunks and the ball rolled inside the far post. Mickey Robinson scored two good goals for Preston. Our other scorer was Simon Stainrod (who came on as the sub in the 1st half) and not long after fired us into the lead with a hopeful long shot that Tunks should have stopped

We played at Oxford on 30th January after we signed Hockey, Hope and Ford. We won 2-1 with both goals coming from Bill Dearden. I was at the match and at the time I thought the Manor ground was the worst I had visited

Deane got our last minute equaliser putting the ball over Thorsvedt

Seen as I'm a bit younger than most on here I'll go for the double debut of Windass and Kabba against Bradford in 2002. They both scored and looked like they were going to form an awesome partnership up front.

Thanks for that Silent Blade - old grey matter playing up. I remember Oxford being somewhere in the events. Did all three make their debut that day? I also think the previous game was the last time we saw Hodgy in the first team. End of an era.

It was Hope and Hockey's debut. Ford's debut was a week later at home to Luton.

That's me told :) I thought I read somewhere it was a shot. I was obviously dreaming.
TC was a good header of the ball although he didnt leap as high as Colquhoun, Flynn or Guthrie. He scored a good header (from a Woody corner) in the 5-1 win against Cardiff in April 1971 although Cardiff claimed he fouled their keeper Jim Eadie. Also scored with his head in the 3-3 draw against Man City in Feb 72 also in the 1-1 draw against WBA in the Texaco Cup in Oct 72

He didn't leap as high as Reece, either, but very few did.

Another TC headed goal came in a 3-2 defeat at Man City in the mid-seventies. I'm at work so I can't look up the exact date but I went with three lads from my year at school and we managed to get served in a pub near Maine Road beforehand so I'd guess 1974 or 1975 when I was 16/17.

One of the other lads I went to Maine Road with was John Clegg, a big Unitedite in those days. Unfortunately, he's not in a position to attend Bramall Lane nowadays as he'd be arrested if he set foot in this country:

7th December 1974. Field got the other.

I remember David Ford signing and queuing up into the John Street while hearing the crowd singing 'David Ford' on the inside.
I didn't realise it was the Luton game..i remember Luton coming with Malcolm MacDonald, but my memory seemed to think they were 2 separate games for some reason.

I remember the excitement as a kid of David Ford being in the Sheffield 'It's a Knockout' team and the game was a penalty shoot out into holes in a board across the goal.

Thought we'd walk it and win; he failed miserably.
