Bearing in mind he only played 45 minutes, I thought Scougall made a great start to his career at Bramall Lane. The same goes for Brayford too, over 90 minutes, so arguably, two of the best debuts we've had for many a year in the same game. Whispering Bob did OK too, for somebody who's played virtually no football for a long time.

So, what's the best debut posters can remember? Mine is Jonas Wirmola, who made his debut against Wimbledon and John Fashanu and Wirmola was immense. I felt sure we'd unearthed a world beater, but 8 games later, he was gone......

...just thought, apologies if this theme's been done before, but I reckon a worst debut is a more likely and potentially longer thread :-)

Paul Furlong's brace against Portsmouth was pretty good. I think he scored the winner with a late penalty.

TC v Spurs has to be up there..we knew we had a player on our hands that day.

Tony Currie - 18year old kid signed from Watford - controlled the middle of the park - headed a goal and we ran out winners 3-1 v Spurs I think ! It was a long time ago!!

Seeing as though borbokis has gone, I'll go for Glynn Hodges ( think it was his loan debut)

What about Bobby Davison at the theatre of rust in 92

Can't remember who it was against, but I thought Des Hamilton looked excellent on his debut when he was loaned to us from Newcastle.

That Sunderland game in '97 had three brilliant debuts. Vas gets the obvious mentions, but you have to remember that Wayne Quinn, Paul McGrath, and the 2nd debut for Deano were all excellent too.

3-2 and it wasn't a header :-)

On the theme of players who had a cracking debut but turned out to be rubbish... Tony Daws, 2 goal hero in the win at Blackburn on 8/11/86, released at the end of the season.

His debut was actually in the 2-0 defeat at Man City on 19/1/91. You're probably thinking of his last minute winner v Derby at the Lane the following week.

David Johnson. Came on for the last 5 minutes at Stoke and we drew 0-0.

I'll never forget that day. We crammed 5 people and 2 lots of crutches into a Fiat Cinquecento.

Tryone Thompson had a very good debut against Ipswich in the FA Cup (2003?).
John Ebbrell looked like a £1.5M player for 45 minutes on his debut.

His debut was actually in the League Cup game v Lincoln at home on 22/8/00 and he also played in the away leg on 5/9/00. He didn't then get another game until he played in that cup game v Ipswich on 24/1/03.

Those were his only 3 games for United.

I seem to remember Steve Finnieston coming from Chelsea and looking like a quality centre forward. Unfortunately he then turned into a bit of an Ebrell and probably only made about 20 appearances for us before, I think, retiring due to injury!

I was certain that it was a header at the Bramall Lane end, perhaps wrong about the score - It was a long, long time ago...............................................................................................................................................................................
I was also at the game and remember it as a header - but wouldnt put money on it

Andy Scott scored twice against Chelsea on his debut if memory serves.

I was at the game, but can't remember much in detail..I remember watching TC and me and my Dad being really impressed..can't remember much about the goals or whether it was a header or not.Jimmy Greaves was in the Spurs side and scored the opener for them,in what ended up a 3-2 victory for us.

Jean Calve had a decent debut..but that was about it..only played 2 or 3 didn't he.
Must be loads more when I've had a think.

Marcello - Came off the bench and seemed to score straight away in a 2-2 draw with QPR. A young Peter Crouch played for them.

I recall Andy Gray winning me some cash when he scored on his debut about 10 years ago

Think he came off the bench the previous away game that season, but it was certainly his full debut.

His debut was at Wednesday on 21/4/93 when he did indeed come as sub. His full debut was that Chelsea game, when he tapped in from 6 inches, he only got the one though.
