Player Suggestion Ben Mee

It’s an ok signing if we aren’t expecting him to actually play much football.

If he’s coming in to be an old experienced head in the dressing room settle things down for the young lads and be an extension of the manager on the training ground and he’s just the first of several CB’s coming through the door then it’s sensible business.

If we’re signing him because we hope he’ll play in 30+ games this season we’re fucking mad. Time will tell I guess
He would be absolutely fine at this level
Experienced premier League players find the championship a piece of piss

I’m very wary of a player his age who hasn’t played a full seasons worth of football since the 22/23 season it’ll be a hell of a shock to the system to suddenly go back to doing that at 36. However if we want him to do the same role he did for Brentford the last two years but just a step down it could work out. That being primarily a bench player and presumably a leader at the club.

Guy's been a free since the end of June. Why has it taken 2 months to get into this? It's ridiculous. Smells of panic mode by the club.

Are people not allowed to revise their thinking or change their mind nowadays ?
Would you rather they just stick to their original thinking even if they've decided it's not working ?

I'd rather there be a cohesive plan to start with. For example the fiasco of ESC slots. The CB situation has not been addressed for literally 2 seasons.

I'm OK with signing Mee in principle.

But you have to ask. Why didn't we sign him before now given he's been free for 2 months. And has he done enough conditioning and pre-season.
Because it will be good to add some leadership and experience. But it's less effective if he's mainly doing that from the stands due to injury/fitness.

At the 1:05 mark in an interview with Sky Sports dated 30th July 2025, he expresses his desire to play on and not leave it after finishing at Brentford. I would think he would be a great addition on a 1 year deal with option to extend for a year, although fitness wise he should be able to walk straight into the side.

Desperation signing. We haven't yet signed a player for the first team other than loans.
This would potentially be the first and at 36 nothing like the alleged model going forward.
You watched the last three games?? We are desperate!

I know we're desperate.
But not exactly the signing model suggested by the owners.
Agreed not the signing model but an adaptive, forward thinking club should be able to think out side of the box and your transfer targets/team playing style should be the first ones where you splash out however when an opportunity arises to sign an experienced CB which is exactly what the club is looking for and on a free then you should be putting a list together of why not. There isn't anything wrong with signing frees/loans especially as we have budget available for wages however signing a free on a couple of years deal just gives the club a bit of stability for the short term. I would be happy if we signed 3 CB Ben Mee types all on frees and got rid of Robinson, it would give some valuable experience at the back. The whole if they are good enough then they should play which usually applies to academy players the same applies at the other end if they can offer 60 mins plus at 35 and put in a solid shift then we have some depth to rotate the squad get them in.

Perhaps there isn't an experienced centre back who can shepherd our younger players available from the Bulgarian leagues?
Seriously though, we need to do something to arrest the slide, pad out the squad and provide something resembling a coherent defence. Get Mee and a couple of permanent defenders in, allow Robinson to move on, and try and re-ignite that spark we saw briefly in the first half against Bristol City.
Owners have fumbled this transfer window big time, so unfortunately it looks more like damage limitation now. Last thing we can afford is to let the rot set in and follow the same route as Luton did last season.

Plenty of free centre backs that are still out there, including Mee, we could add 3 or 4 to the ranks no problems and not quite sure why we aren't, if they are fit get them in!
