Morning all!

I have managed to gain a place in this year’s London Marathon, which takes place on April 17th, and will be running in support of the Alzheimer’s Society and so I’m looking to raise a minimum of £2000 in sponsorship.

I will also be, very proudly, running the race in a full Sheffield United kit. I have been given a home shirt by SUFC onto which I've had printed the Alzheimer's Society logo (My avatar).

I would be tremendously grateful if anyone is able to sponsor me for running. The cause is a fantastic one. I think most, if not all, of us will know people affected by dementia and so will understand the devastation it causes. Research into the illness and support for those suffering with it and their loved ones is hugely important. The work the Alzheimer’s Society does in both of these areas is hugely significant. Every penny that can be raised to help with their work will make a difference. I'm a psychiatric nurse in Leeds and for many years I've worked with people suffering with dementia and their loved ones and I see the fantastic work done by the Alzheimer's Society at first hand.

Fundraising has got off to a good start with an online auction of songs for me to listen to whilst running (i.e. people have bid against each other, with the winner of each auction being able to name a song for me to listen to during the race – no-one suggested Annie’s Song!!) This has raised over £400 itself with my total being just over £900 at the moment. The auction has now run its course but the fundraising must continue! I've also sent this message as an e-mail to the top brass at SUFC.

The best way to sponsor me is through my JustGiving page the link to which is below. If you can Gift Aid your donation then the charity gets more money at no extra cost to you.

Thanks for getting to the end of my rambling message,

UTB and COYRAWW! :)

Adam.

No takers from S24SU so far and the club and their employees are unable to sponsor me directly but will publicise my efforts which is something, I suppose!

Please try to sponsor me anything you can. Every penny raised goes to help people who are suffering with this illness and their loved ones. As a psychiatric nurse I see people going through this every day and they need as much help as we can possibly give them. In my opinion dementia is the cruellest illness of all, stripping the sufferer of their personality and dignity bit by agonising bit and, for most, at a time in their lives when they should be able to relax and enjoy life. Their loved ones can only watch helplessly as the illness progresses. These carers are often elderly themselves and are limited in the support they can give. The Alzheimer's Society is crucial in helping and supporting people at this unbelievably difficult time in their lives, both emotionally and practically. They are also driving research into the causes of dementia and are involved in developing medical treatments.

The population is getting older and this awful problem is growing although dementia is not exclusive to the elderly. Many people under the age of 65 suffer with this. The youngest person I have ever nursed with the illness was 36 years old and had 2 young children. They watched their father wither and die as a result of his dementia. The Alzheimer's Society played a great part in supporting that family at the most impossible time anyone could face. I am almost certain most of us, if not all, will know someone affected by dementia, if not a relative then a neighbour or a relative of a friend.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance to anyone who is able to donate anything they can.

Thanks to Duncan Disorderly for the donation and Highbury for the promise of one!

Good to get a win last night too! :)

Oh, go on then. Having only ever run half marathons I think I have a fair idea of just how committed* you must be.

:)

Big thanks to JohnDenver, Oreyt and Bath Blade for their donations. It's really gratefully received!

Oh, and JD, everyone's faster than Richard Cresswell!!

I'd somehow missed this thread CA, apologies! :)

Will give the thread some coverage on our twitter/facebook too!

Thank-you to Sale Blade and Highbury Blade for your donations and thanks to Foxy for helping other people see this.

Oh and boooooooooooooooooooooo to the referee yesterday for his card-happiness!

Cheers to GAZBLADE, Blade in Lincoln and Brownie. I will be full of pride wearing the sacred stripes when running the marathon! I won't let you down! :)

I'm tempted to get a captain's armband for the race, or would that just be a bit sad?

That's a fantastic effort in the heat. I've spoken to others who reckon the heat added the best part of half an hour on to their times.
