Beautiful Down Town Bramall Lane

In my youth as the train from Manchester headed through Abbeydale , and slowed down , going passed Lavers yard , the sight of those floodlights ( now gone ) reminded me that my ferry , Liverpool to manchester , Manchester to Sheffield journey had
brought me home , when on the to infrequent journeys back to the Lane , with my son , I look out for all those sights that reminded me of growing up in Sheffield , now sadly gone , I wonder will my son remember these journeys as fondly as I do .
Sorry for going melancholy Blades , but on match days I get jealous as fuck that most on here will be able to cheer on our team in person , rather than like me rely on , Sky , S2 tweets , etc etc .
UTB .

Just for you, Dublin.

Newcastle

I think here we meet our Waterloo, and I always feared it would be so. St James' Park towers magnificently over the heart of the City - but where exactly is the centre? 'Central' Metro station (sounds reasonable) is 0.49 miles from the centre spot at St James' Park. There are other contenders, but in truth they are all closer still to St James' Park, so I think we admit defeat on this one.

But is there anywhere to beat St James Park? Or anywhere else that beats BDTBL?

St Albans 0.47 miles

St Albans 0.47 miles

Not a league club I'm afraid.

However my fact of the day is that St Alban's City's hooligan element call themselves EFM, which stands for England's First Martyr (i.e. St Alban). Clearly a different breed of hooligans in that part of the country...

You didn't specify they had to be league clubs, just clubs that were in a city :)

Bugger - you're right.

All I said was a football ground in a city, which opens the door to complete anarchy because any old five-a-side pitch could be considered a football ground.

I reserve the right to make up the rules as I go along - it's league clubs only. :)

What a superb post, thank you Workington. Now this may violate the terms of the debate as Milton Keynes is, I believe, a new TOWN.

But when they first moved to MK from Wimbledon, where I believe they used to play on number 3 court, the 'Dons' played at the national Hockey stadium.

I think we played in the second ever match there and though my memory is unreliable, it seemed like a shorter walk from the station than Bramall Lane even?

Whether or not the railway station is at the centre of Milton Keynes is a moot point, it certainly isn't at the heart of Milton Keynes, it hasn't got one.

Interesting one. I'd put the centre of Milton Keynes at Midsummer Place, which is the middle of the big shopping centre which kind of substitutes for a city centre.

The National Hockey Stadium is 0.78 miles from there (though much closer to the station).

However, the test is their current ground, which is in Bletchley - an entirely different place - and is 2.42 miles away from the centre of Milton Keynes. Never knowingly out-plasticked.

Hull before they moved.

Slightly surprisingly, Boothferry Park is further from the city centre than their new ground.

The City Hall looks good as the centre of the city. Boothferry Park was 2.15 miles away. The KC comes in at a mere 1.24 miles from the centre.

Incidentally, unlike most other old grounds, which have been replaced with housing estates etc, Boothferry Park appears to be largely still there - albeit derelict. This may not say much for land values in Hull, but it's a dramatic looking place. Worth a look.

By the way, I do realise the amount of time I'm spending looking up these grounds is a bit sad, but in my defence I'm doing it to avoid having to follow the actual football, which is just depressing.

Hartlepool, not a city but it's a reasonable size (92,000) and Victoria park's centre spot is just 0.19 miles away from the town hall.

Beat that.

OK Workington, I grudgingly accept your MK thesis. I think you used to pass the old cricket ground at Hull on the way from the city centre to Boothferry Park.

I seem to remember the cricket ground was called the Circle??????? and thats where they built the new stadium.

Oh and that was City Hull's ground before Boothferry Park, right next to it.

It might pay you to also look at what people are replying to!

I believe your lad will have great memories, just different ones. But I think no matter how far we travel to BDTBL we all have things that trigger our emotions.
Know what you mean HB , although his memories are of nice hotels and playoff , and semi-final defeats , in London , oh and Meadowhall .
My how he likes his shopping , yet moans when I want to go for a pint . :)
