Beating the first man......

Every time we get a corner I worry we'll get hit on the counter...

We've still got TC knocking around, he could drop the ball on a sixpence. Remember the ones he used to tee up for Woody charging in from the half way line? It wouldn't hurt for him to run a seminar and follow it up with a practical session on the training ground to explain how its done. Fucking hell, the expertise is there, use it.

I know what you mean. I'm afraid these are just badly struck corners in the main. Can't beat the first man. But there's also something tactically wrong as well. One of the most effective corners is when they are hit to a player on the near post whose job is to head it backwards across the goal. We used to score loads of goals from that move under various managers. I don't think I've seen us attempt it once in recent years. I don't know why?
Team defending now puts a decent header of the ball in front of the man at the near post, so that fans of the attacking side complain that the crosses never get past the first defender... I think that move has lost its surprise element. Like when Jack Charlton was first put on the near post to score headers - teams wised up, and put someone of similar hight with him. I can't remember the last time I saw a goal scored by a beanpole standing at the near post.

For anyone who watches other football matches that aren't Blades games, this isn't something particular to us.

Agree we were highlighted earlier on in the season as real innovators at set pieces. I don’t think we’re a particularly big side and apart from O’Connoll I don’t think we’ve got an outstanding header of the ball. If the oppo keeps him under wraps, we don’t score.

Tbf Jack has missed a few sitters this season, needs to get one then they'll start flowing again hopefully.

Lee Evans takes an excellent corner. It’s just that he hasn’t played much yet.

The vast majority of clubs achieve little or nothing from corners. They’re not very good from throw-ins either.

We can, of course, carry on thinking these things are exclusive to us and that we are the very worstest team of all time at corners. It’s good for the Bladey Inferiority Complex.

We ❤️ Saying Our Own Team is Gash.

To be fair, pretty much every team’s fans thinks that they’re also crap from corners.

Another one is that short corners never work. Until they do :)

They do and, to complete the circle, I suspect they think it’s only or mainly their team that’s crap at corners.

As for short corners - Gerritintfuckinmiddle

Actually think the delivery has improved a bit on corners from earlier in the season, as mentioned above Evans puts a decent ball in...we’ve just not scored as many this season which may be down to the oppo and ‘luck’...

The delivery isn't anywhere near as bad as a lot seem to say . It's more the fact that we barely pose an aerial threat when it comes to set pieces . Last season we had JOC , EEL and even Hanson competing in their box from set plays . This season we have JOC and that's about it .

I guess a lot of this is down to the way Wilder sets his teams up to play . Coutts , Fleck and Duffy are one of the best midfield combinations I've ever seen at the Lane . 10 years ago we have been livid with that set up as we'd have all complained there was no height there .

I know the kind of set up and style id rather see ...... even if that means we won't be scoring 2 goals for every 100 corners .

Why oh why are our corners and free kicks so bad?

Forget just last nights collection of failures to get crosses, corners and free kick high enough to get the ball to our attackers it's endemic in out game. We moan about our quality up front and lack of goals but you can't bake a cake without the ingredients being delivered to you.

Don't know if this is tactical for fear of losing possession, lack of skill or just bad luck but we need to work on it on the training ground.
it's funny how people say 'ooh we got a corner' as though it's half a goal.. i always think 'oh f*ck a corner'.. goals from corners are pretty rare these days
long story short. corners are overrated.

ahem.. Woody used to 'score' from corners! :D

Our corners have been generally shocking for many year, with a huge improvement last season. It coincided with us having 2-3 players attacking the ball at pace. We seem to prefer to loiter in the box nowadays. Corners should always cause trouble for defenders. Whether that's a keeper or defender clearing well under pressure or a header at goal. It's the ones which are cleared easily by the first man which wind me up.

I can pretty much guarantee that if we'd spent more time this season in training learning how to stop a man shooting from outside the box and less time on corners we'd have more points. As most have said corners themselves aren't a huge source of goals for a lot of teams, what they do signify is that we can have a phase of play where we have more people in the attacking half than normal so we should be more dangerous. In practice it gets cleared and I shit myself that we'll concede from the counter.
