Baxter's comments - ill advised?

Part of a fairly lengthy interview but of course it's the comments above that make the headlines.

In my opinion, it wrongly gives the impression we're a strong, physical team who've only beaten Premier League sides by bullying and kicking them.
Also, puts it in the referees mind that he needs to clamp down hard on United's barging and kicking tactics.

It would have been better if Jose had stuck with some cliches about working hard, giving 110% but playing our football where we can etc...

I presume it won't be Baxter himself doing the kicking? He doesn't run fast enough to catch anyone, never mind kick them!

Maybe he's trying to get them to think, "battle" so they don't resort to skill to beat us but expect to get into a scrap. That would help us as we might get some free kicks to alleviate the pressure and give Bob the chance to put us in the driving seat

I took it as piss take of the 5 live phone live or Talk sport phone in (I forget which station) the other week where an "expert sumeriser" was asked why we had such a good recent cup record and he spoke about a "strong physical side, dangersous at set peices quick to close the opposition down and to get in their faces

I just read that article in the reception in my office and it made me laugh. I don't think United have been physical for the last 10 years! Unless physically weak counts of course.

Unwise comments as reported but I fully agree with Baxter about the "nambey pambey" little handshakes that Prem players give each other so many times during a game. Whenever they have physical contact it seems like an almost apologetic touching of fists or a tap on the back in apology for even the slightest body contact.

And yes the Southampton defenders were taken unawares a few times when they couldn't just turn around slowly and wander upfield with the ball with all the time in the world to play it away comfortably.

The media have obviously picked those parts out from his interview, but he says some interesting stuff about how soft the Premier League is. Its no secret that the Premier League is less physical and slower than the 3 divisions below, so no doubt the ref will have this in mind anyway. The refs are matey with all the premiership boys anyway so i don't think its an issue.

Plus when the two sides are lined up in the tunnel, Spurs will be looking at us and thinking that Hobbit XI will be easy pickings. As i said after the QPR game, Doyle will be looking across and counting up the glove wearers and reiterating who the soft lads are.

May suit Baxter if they think to fly in on him. He is probably the one player from standing who could take piss. Baxter is now used to the timing of league one tackles and premiership ones might be timed a little different. Lets hope this is the case and their player flying in and missing leaves a big hole for Baxter to play the telling ball in to.
That could of course be a load of twaddle and Baxter certainly will not have thought like that during the interview.

This article was wriiten by Mark Ogden who is a well respected journalist along with Henry Winter who both work for the Telegraph . If it was published in a red top then , i think a totally differant slant could be put on it.

When first reading it , my impression was the Baxter had come across not very intellegent , and coming from a player like him , was a bit farcical . However reading it again , good on him for using a bit of pyhcology . However lets hope it does not back fire with some of the refereeing decisions , but again it takes two to tango.

If this is the thinking of Baxter and his team mates , great . Its about time we started to have some back bone , and stop being soft as shit.

Negative anticipation from opponents , has to be the order of the day in ALL games.

The funniest thing is that Baxter draws the most fouls in our team, being good with his feet and slow.
