The thing is it will be hell of a long time before any journalist criticise us for putting effort in again.

Love the letter from Bassett. Where did you get that ?!

And that's how to become a legend at the lane...

Brilliant to see that..

I remember Eric Nixon's time wasting that Bassett referred to. He took an age to get ready for the penalty and psyched Dane out - he put it wide of the right hand post. We won anyway so it didn't matter.

I remember Pompey trying that in 89/90 I think Kevin Ball? Didn't matter a jot as Duffield scored both.

Remember how excited i used to get to recieve any kind of letter with that letterhead on it
As for bassett its s shame to see the club back where he found it after he and warnock have done so much to lift the club from the position that the prople who run the club seem to think it belongs

Brilliant! - well done for digging that out. I was at that game and actually we played some really good football.

Brilliant reply from Bassett. Remarkably it appears the author of the piece has attempted to remain in journalism.

The good old days, I was at the match and remember Dane Whitehouse skewing his penalty badly wide, and also remember this appearing in the Flashing Blade under the heading "how others see us"

Loved reading that, I wonder if he got a response?

We had a lot of articles about our games under Warnock that were clearly devised before they'd watched the game.

Lots of references to us being 'physical' and playing "long ball" even when we'd been bullied off the pitch ourselves and played some good stuff.

Thanks for posting that.

Ball was sent off (for punching John Gannon) when Pompey were 1-0 up, and so he wasn't on the field for the penalties.

I might have the wrong player, sure I recall it happening - did Duff ever miss a pen?

No - 7 out of 7, which is the most anyone ever took for us without missing one. His pens:

1 vs Gillingham 1988-9 (won 4-2)
2 vs Bolton 1988-9 (won 4-0)
1 vs Huddersfield 1988-9 (won 5-1)
1 vs Mansfield 1988-9 (won 1-0)
2 vs Portsmouth 1989-90 (won 2-1)

They were all scored at home except the Mansfield one.

We do seem to have a lot of bad press , that is journos ,I use the term very loosely, with agendas.
The Wednesday fan at the Express must start a lot of it and all the West Ham fans who work in Fleet Street , or as it is now Wapping Liars
Ive only been watching us 50 years so had little chance of seeing anything positive written about us

Didnt miss a penalty in reserves and youth matches too

FOOTBALL NOSTALGIA.

I'm not shouting by the way, it's just written like that.
I was hoping it was something like 'how to have a career in journalism despite having only a modicum of talent'
