Was very happy to see Bash starting vs Carlisle. However i thought that was one of his worst games he has had for us in a long time. Kept on giving the ball away, lost posession a few times more than other players (previous seasons he hasnt done this). He was getting very frustrated with a lot of passing going on and to top it off he looked completely void of any confidence. There was multiple opportunities for him to break forward and overlap but he seemed to be held back by the new tactics.

Bash overlapping wasn't broken, it was one of our best assets last season. The relationship between him Baldock/Bogle was great and that should still be used.

I do hope this isn't him falling off a cliff, because he in my eyes is a Legend at United for what he has done in his role, his attitude and application. But i think Slav will slowly push him out as "defenders do defending" clearly is his tactics.

Stick him in the DM role screening the back 4, so when the full backs bomb on he can drop into the 3. Do we really need Norwood there? Can't head, tackle, or run. Bash can play 10 yard passes just as well.

“Falling off a cliff”? Steady on he’s barely had a preseason and this was his first competitive game!
He did have 45 mins vs Europa and Donny. Its just so uncharacteristic of him to make those mistakes thats all. He did have a hamstring injury before and i just hope that doesn't change how he plays

we wont need him there when viera arrives to protect the back 4 can really see slav splitting wilders team apart in the next 12 months dont think we will recognise it this time next year

He isn’t going to suit SJ’s style at all. We may have seen the end of Bash. 😢

He only really excels in a three at the back
He did play in a three but barely got over the half way line this was obviously under the orders of the manager
Dont know if that was down to the other two CBS being young an inexperienced
It seems to be ludicrous to tell Basham to curb his attacking instincts

This is sooooo true. I really hope SJ can find a way to include this going forward - we will be a poorer team IMO if we can't utilise one of the few strengths from last season. Bash has proved over the last 4 seasons that he is one of our best players and seriously underrated by all those outside of BDTBL.

I'd view it as a big negative on Slav as a manager if he doesn't realise he needs to find a place for Bash

One of our better players of the past ten years, in effort and endeavour.

We need him back in the first team. In a back four I'd take Basham playing out of position at LCB over 3PO any day.

His brazenness in drifting into space, up the pitch and gaining valuable pitch metres with the ball at his feet is worth a billion Norwood pings for George to bring down, pass backward and recycle, or a billion Osborn mix-it-up scraps out on the far flank.

He is also outstandingly deft for a rangey feller and reads the game very well.

Basham back, please

I bloody hope so.

Basham is probably one the best ballers at the club. His close control and surging runs are a joy to behold. But to someone who hasn’t seen a lot of a bash, his ungainly style and his unorthodox way of defending maybe not be that pleasing eye for some people (Slav).

I thought he had tweaked something fairly early on the other night. Looked to be struggling a bit, his groin maybe?

Armchair experts out in force once again writing off one of our most reliable and consistent performers based on precious little other than “he’s 30 odd now which means his legs have gone”.

Pathetic.

UTB
Not writing him off at all. If you read the post it says it was uncharacteristic of him. Nowt to do with his age either, as never mentioned in the opening post. He is one of our best assets, his ball carrying ability is sensational and he also makes lots of progressive passes (sorry is that too much of an armchair expert for you to understand?) Which are key to any good team.

I hope its just a one off, last mistake i saw him make was vs Leicester in 2019 where he was tackled whilst walking out with the ball and Leicester then scored. Hes a legend after all in my eyes so don't want to see him drop off!

im not writing him off either just think hes another player who doesnt suit slavs way of playing especially if we go to a back 4 if davies comes in i also think he will be on the bench more than in the starting line up

Maybe Bash was carrying an injury, but I really think he is a confidence player and that Wilder found his niche role in a defensive 3, coached him 24/7 in that position until he was outstanding.
People forget that in that first PL season he was one of the best defenders in the league.

I'm not sure we need Basham at all. If he doesn't fit into the new managers thinking then that's that. He's not good enough on the ball to play in the middle of the park and he's not physical enough or good enough in the air to play as one of a centre back pairing.

He's exceptional on the right of a three man defence. But he's not worth basing your whole style of play on.

Basham's a model professional and one of very few central defenders available right now. He'll get his chances and he'll do his best.

I am sure Basham will get his chance. He has been such a good player for us he can't suddenly lose his ability overnight. Perhaps some of the players just need a few wins under their belt to get their confidence back after last season's debacle. Al;so, that Wilder team spirit we had has obviously been broken now with the new players who have come in.
