Basham

As admirable as Basham has been at times, he's as good as he'll ever be, and for the Blades to progress we need to buy better than we already have.

It's not complicated, better players will improve our chances of securing promotion. Over to you whichever directors fund our signings. Either think small and hope for miracles, or understand the necessity of what's needed to progress.

To be fair it was probably equal on both sides, (Fulham x 3, Birmingham and Hull) and to be fair on Bash it was probably more CCV than him...

CCV falling over to be more specific :D

I think it's too easy to pin some of our poor defending on Basham, whereas in most cases it's the team collectively that are to blame. I don't think Basham has given it away that often in poor areas, whereas I've seen Lee Evans and John Lundstram do that on a regular basis.

I really like JOC, he's probably my favourite player, but I'm not blind to the fact that I think he could have been better this season. If we're talking defensive lapses, he's probably had as many as Basham, although to be fair I think both of them have been really consistent, purely from a defensive aspect. However I think JOC needs to play the ball more like he did last season. Too many times I've seen him try that diagonal ball which might have come off once or twice but invariably gets cut out and causes us a problem on the opposite side of the pitch.

There are many more pressing matters than replacing Basham right now. He’s the not th answer long term if we want to keep progressing maybe however he’s in our best 7/8 players this season as a whole, not just the first few months. A couple of strikers, a left wing back and a keeper before anything else. Maybe then we can look at centre half.

Lots of graft, generally great fella but moving forward he just doesn’t have the quality and has proved to be a liability st times, good squad player, but if were to move forward he needs replacing as a first team regular.

The Bob Booker limited talent award goes to...............

Exactly what I was thinking as I read this thread. Bob Booker did it for us at a higher level, but the comparison is still valid. Both entirely committed to the cause, making the most of their limited ability and proof that to be a hero at Bramall Lane, you don't need to be world class.

It may have escaped your thinking but the general rule of thumb (at least at SUFC) is that to free up budgets it requires a sale in order to consider buying someone else.

But that's not how you best progress a team.

The best way to progress your team is to bring in serious competition for the first teamers, thus leaving the current 'cover' players surplus to requirement. That way you're improving your depth and first team quality - otherwise you're left with a scenario around Christmas time where we're playing Lavery upfront and Lundstram at centre half.

And regarding your point about budget, it's almost like wasting a chunk of money on a player who's started ONE game since chasing for 18 months and finally signing is a waste of money. And then there's the loan fees for Wilson...
Having said that, we didn't have to sell to buy in January or the summer window did we?

Historically I think it's been shown that there's more than one way to build and progress a club. Of course competition for places is vital. But it's a manager's job to ascertain who is equipped to take a step up, no matter what their form, but whether they have it within them to improve. Maybe Bash will remain (still not party to confidential info), but the player I've watched, as reliable as he's been, doesn't appear to have it within him to become any better than he's shown. I'm not anti Bash, but as Wilder has said far too many times, I'm loyal not sentimental.

Sorry Mr Holmes but Basham was at Newcastle academy.

Nathan Thomas was a Sunderland youth player so he would be the best bet.

Thomas is also from Middlesbrough so would be best placed to be mates with the nephew of someone with a "smoggie" username. Would be interesting to know the context of the remark if it was from Thomas - I can see him being frustrated at the news (not that I necessarily agree if that is the case!).

Agreed, obviously it's all speculation but if what the guy says it's true then I would definitely put my money on Thomas.

Although with all these 'if this person hypothetically did this' bits we've been getting recently this forum's turning into a bit into an Angry Frank sketch from Harry Enfield.

Oi! Wilder! No!

Selling first teamers and replacing those players with a like for like whilst keeping the same quality of depth (which at the moment is poor) isn't progressing at all. It's a squad game, especially in this league. The teams with the best SQUADS are the ones who normally end up in the top 6.

I don't recall suggesting any of that, but careful reflection by a canny manager is surely the way forward? Players come and go, and we all hope that with each new purchase we see an improvement on those who've left. By all means nit-pick over that, but there's a brutal logic in all of this. I agree that good squads are crucial, so where you imagine I've said otherwise is puzzling.

Puzzling? Erm, you clearly advocate getting rid of Basham. What are you expecting? A full squad overhaul this summer with the owners at loggerheads?

Replacing Chris Basham is nothing like the priority.

At no point did I suggest that the sale or retention of Basham was a priority. Rather than assume that's what I meant it would have been helpful (for you) to enquire what my thoughts were on a far wider picture. I agree (there, see how easy it is to ask nicely?) that all the while the owners are in dispute it's far from ideal and will certainly fuel Wilder's annoyance....so, just so you understand, the sale or retention of Basham isn't a priority as far as I'm concerned. I leave that to our very capable manager.

I've seen a few posts about the lack of appearances/opportunities for Ryan Leonard since he signed. I would suggest the form of Basham since Leonard sign has been a big factor in this. Like Foxy said I think Leonard is seen, at least by Wilder, as the one to fill that role at some point.

Never got a players name on the back of a shirt before, but next season I'll be forking out for Bashams name on the back of the new kit. I'll feel like it's my 10th birthday present.
I'm in love with the bloke

Basham not the answer
Why not. Every pundit this season on tv have praised his impact. He's the modern day Bob Booker. All the prem teams need work horses like Basham . Look how Fulham have fucked up buying in more "talented" players than playing their grafters who got them up.

We may buy 4 or 5 new players but no way should wholesale changes ruin what we have got. Our system is based on team spirit as much as it is on talent. We will compete in the prem down to our ethics. One of which is rewarding the grafters.Basham got his first half half chance wrong but boy his character won us the game as he knuckled down and ploughed through Leeds rearguard

It’s an old thread. It hasn’t aged well.
