I've always admired Bash's commitment and heart for the club. Love the guy and I don't underestimate the influence he has on the squad. A top lad.

But if Utd are to move onto the next level the ultimately he will need to be replaced. That's how winning teams develop and get stronger.

I would love to have Bash as a regular back up next season as that would mean that we are stronger at the back, conceding less silly goals, and we are stronger. I hope he's with us for a good while yet though.
 
We should sign another centre half, but it will be interesting to see if we go for someone to cover right and centre or left and centre. Wilder might see Basham and Leonard as the RCB options, whereas O'Connell still has no competition. So it wouldn't surprise me to see us just get someone for CB/LCB.

Fairly shocked at this thread.

I’ve posted numerous times on this forum disapproving of Basham’s inclusion but, after winning me over last season and another solid campaign this season, I think he’s one of maybe only 3 or 4 who are guaranteed starters.

And, more recently, despite his unique style, he’s been the one player getting it down and driving us forward in frustrating games. I’d go so far as to say he’s the one player to come out of the final quarter of the season with any real credit.

And yet for all the qualities that he does have (which are already mentioned in the thread), has he not also been part of a back line that has conceded goals for fun (obviously not all down to him).

Could you see him being a regular in a team that can get promotion to the premiership?Would he have been a regular in Wolves, Cardiff's or Fulham's sides this season? If the answers are No and No then if you want to be ruthless and progress...

Ruthlessness and progression I’m all for and I wanted him out (of home game starting line-ups) for years. With him as a midfielder we’ve generally been very ineffective. When I saw the formation before our game at S6 I feared the worst. I’ll say no more on that one!

But the answers to those questions now are Yes and Yes.

I put the defensive frailties down to the formation not being as effective against better sides. More precisely the wing backs not being quite good enough. That’s where I’d be most ruthless, especially if he’s insistent on this formation against every single opposition. Which, for the record, I’m all for as it makes for entertaining football matches. I do think being so insistent on it has cost us this season though.

I think your bang on the money with the point about the formation. 5-3-2 is a great formation for us as it suits our players and the players are comfortable with it. However whilst I'm a huge fan of CW, I do think he has been a little naive at times and possibly been too cavalier (refreshing attitude that it has been and to watch) and there have been a few instances where I wanted us to be more solid and play with a back four (4-4-2 or 4-5-1) especially away from home against the teams who had more quality firepower.

Good teams and good players can adapt and play various slight differences in positions. We have given far too many silly goals away this season and shot ourselves in the foot countless times and I wish we had been more resilient at the back.

Hopefully CW will have learnt a load from this season and will be more prone to tweak and change formation from week to week as necessary (with us of course!!)

Look, its common knowledge within the Sheff U squad that WIlder is staying next season. One of Sheff U's players, a good friend of my nephew, has told me this. He was on your books as a kid actually but you binned him. Think you might regret that decision as well ! Anyway, thats the truth........ WILDER IS NOT YOUR NEXT MANAGER!
 
Are some people wired up right ...player of the season for me ..along with O'Connell....if he goes it will leave a massive hole on the pitch and in the dressing room ....
 
Each to their own but I think Bash has been of the better more consistent performers all season, and is still a key member of our squad imho.

He's professional, committed, versatile, and most importantly, he's clearly good enough if not a world beater. Unless our budget dramatically increases I can't for the life of me see why we'd want to offload him. Other areas more important for spending our realistically limited budget on.
 
One of my favourite players, but I was starting to doubt him when he (like many others, in fairness) had a real rough patch in the middle of the season. But his form has picked up massively in the last half-dozen games.

Everyone knows he's not the most technically gifted player, but he's actually not too shabby with the ball at his feet and if he could cross he'd be exceptionally dangerous. His willingness to get forward is part of what makes us the exciting, attacking team we are.
 
For the first half of last season, I thought he was a useful utility player to have on the bench for when better defenders and midfielders got injured. For me, he wasn't a natural defender or midfielder and didn't appear to add much to the team.

In the second half of last season, he would have been the first name on the team sheet with some commanding performances in that right sided centre back role. I think this season, he's been one of the most consistent players and was man of the match by a country mile a couple of weeks ago v Preston.

Just watch the number of times he gets in front of his man and anticipates the ball. He can play too, who can forget his 'Cruyff turn' in the game against Southampton. He just seems to lack a bit of belief in his own ability, he'll go on a surging run to the edge of the box and then timidly knock it sideways to another player. As dc_blade says, if he could only cross a ball too!

I'd also point out that he seems to be a model professional, a real team man - things that are priceless to any team.

To be fair to him mate he has put in a few wonderful crosses this season, strikers just haven't got on the end of them. I agree that it's an area he should work on though because he isn't nearly consistent enough with his deliveries.

Sorry Mr Holmes but Basham was at Newcastle academy.

Nathan Thomas was a Sunderland youth player so he would be the best bet.
 
Ah the enigma that is Bash....headless chicken one week, world class the next.....can't shoot, can barely cross but his overall contribution this season has been invaluable at times.

Having said that I think that side of defence will be one of the areas we are looking to strengthen. we conceded so many goals, particularly from distance on that side that it can't be ignored. if Freeman was better at defending or Baldock a few inches taller I could see one of those two in there with the other at RWB....a great over-lapping attack.

I thought it was the left channel where we kept conceeding, especially late in games?
Brizzle, Villa, Cardiff and Millwall to name but a few.
 
Nice lad, but not good enough for a side who want to be pushing for the play-offs in the Championship. Gives the ball away far too much.
 
Our defence has made some right dozy mistakes that have cost us a better finish. I would say it needs strengthening in the summer. ..............Who would you replace?

To be fair it was probably equal on both sides, (Fulham x 3, Birmingham and Hull) and to be fair on Bash it was probably more CCV than him...
