Basham

Am I right in thinking 'Bashembauer' started out as a bit of joke name? Without doubt, one of the most reliable players I've seen in a Blades shirt. Week in, week out, whatever the role, wherever on the pitch, he's absolutely the man you want there. Not infallible, but to have been used so successfully and to be able to turn your hand (or feet) to so many roles, successfully, shouldn't be over looked.

I didn't think he was at his usual high standards in the 1st half. He gave the ball away a few times but second half he was immense.
Agreed, but even in the first half the defensive side was fine ...

Quite a few plaudits flying around today and rightly so. But what about this man, a quandry to solve with both our RWBs out and cometh the hour cometh the man. Fucking brilliant, what a team player.
Basham has had a very good season so far but I thought he was poor today. He was caught out several times against a shite Hull team. Played out of position and it showed.

I’m just waiting for the myth to arise that we were ‘gash’, ‘terrible’ ‘shite’ or other such nonsense, in the first half. It’s bollocks, of course, but it won’t be far away.

We weren’t at our best but still had the better of the game against a lively Hull style. Second half we were utterly relentless. A complete performance in every way.

So did Coutts & Fleck but they don't come under the spotlight like Basham. Plus they don't get asked to fill in at at RWB.

Coutts was superb. As ever he orchestrated our performance. He’s class from top to toe. In the second half the opposition were crying out for a ball of their own. Paul Coutts was using the one on the Desso. No finer sight in football.

First half was more isolated than our right back normally is, and Hull did a very good pressing game to limited the time he got, second half they didn't keep up the same intensity and people like Basham, Coutts and Fleck got to have more influence than in the first as a result.

I'm claiming that naming. For the South Stand anyway where he was originally named Beckanbash. I say originally, it was initially "square boots" or " he's got Captain Blades boots on again". He's developed immensely since then, like quite a few others.

He was though, much better in the second half, when he was, superb.

Basham has a relatively poor game (by his high standards), especially the first half.
Although in fairness he wasn’t playing his usual right of side of the 3 centre halves position, so you can cut him some slack.

I was saying at half time how much we were missing Baldock attacking down that right hand side.

Although in the 2nd half everyone seemed to up their game and we came out firing and up for it.

He was way short of his usual standard first half. Improved a lot after the break which is probably why the whole team stepped up.
Class act, love watching him.

Thought he was a little too deep for much of the first half. Both him and Fleck were better once he got forward more.

I said ,2 to 1-1\2 seasons ago he was crap. Now one of my fav players - I am a numpty!

I think we should cut him some slack, not playing in his favoured position and up against a really decent player, he got beat a couple of times first half but that was all. I don't recall them getting in down his side at all second half. Managers dream having a player like Bash.

Bash is not a great passer or crosser of tha ball which is why in my view his best position is at CB where he has been immense for the last 2 seasons. Yesterday his lack of passing ability showed quite a bit. Having said that he defended really well and he is a great athlete, is superbly fit, has a great heart and clearly loves the club. Added to that he gets asked to fill in in various positions which are not naturally his forte as yesterday. Despite his limitations I love him to bits. He is already a Blades legend. Great player for us who epitomises the current team spirit and ethos.

He can play in four positions on the pitch and gives it the kitchen sink in every one when a lot of players would have mard.

It's asking an incredible amount for him shine as an emergency wingback, but after a pretty creaky first half he did just that. He's worth far more to SUFC than we'd ever get for him on the transfer market.

Think bash was as always great particularly as the game went on , such a vital player to us

Think he actually missed Carter Vickers ' doing a basham !' Usually bash fly's forward from CB to support baldock or freeman and works brilliantly and adds an extra man to the attack, vital when playing at home the way teams come to defend against us

1st half carter Vickers was always back next to wright and didn't get forward much at all ( not blaming him at all as he is now used to playing the middle CB who stays back )/ , 2nd half he pushed on , set up Leon's first from a bash pass and normal service was resumed !
