Cause have never seen a team that puts 11 men behind the ball. No spark, no touch of magic, no unlocking of a defence, no defence splitting pass....England were poor, did not look like a confident team. Early in the season, maybe. Just need to find a Hoddle, Charlton, Gerrard, someone to grab the ga.e by the scruff of the neck as they say.

Trouble was Iceland looked just as dangerous as we did. There's times our defence looks very ragged and almost panic riddled. With the players we have we should be capable of finding or creating spaces but there wasn't any urgency in our play

It's a great shame that the England team are so unbalanced. The attacking options are the best I've seen in my lifetime, and there's some really exciting players coming through.

I dont think Southgate is a particularly good manager, even if he was though, he'd struggle to cobble together a good side, even when everyone is fit.

With the exception of RB, the defence is poor. The midfield is a joke: There's some decent 10s, but a complete absence of decent players who can play deep. Henderson is ok, and Phillips has potential, after that I'm struggling.

Again, you're missing the point. It's nothing to do with my expectations on England, it's the fact that Southgate - not for the first time - has been completely useless in changing the game tactically. Iceland tonight had a game plan, which he should have expected, but instead he goes with 2 defensive midfielders which is absolute lunacy.

After knocking the ball around turgidly slowly and failing to break them down or get anywhere near their goal, still he persists with 0 creativity despite giving no service to the strikers. Southgate has got out of jail massively tonight. It's not about battering teams in qualifiers/friendlies, it's about how he performs in the big games in major tournaments against better opposition. If he fails to make positive changes in games like tonight, we're completely fucked when we play anyone decent.

And before you mention the World- Cup semi, if we get knocked out at any point before the Croatia game, the tournament is seen as yet another disaster. Credit where it's due, he met expectations, however his inability to react to the changes Croatia made in the semi-final were a massive contributing factor in why we never looked like getting back in the game.

So, it's nothing to do with not battering teams. Sometimes you win 1-0 and the keeper has a worldy or the ball doesn't quite bounce for you, but the ball ain't gunna bounce very often if you have no desire to break teams down. Credit goes to Iceland tonight they had a gameplan and stuck to it but we didn't make it very difficult for them at all.
Who was the second defensive midfielder?
