The bad luck we have had this season is unbelievable, but that's what happens when you go down, nowt goes your way, So lets have the bad luck out there in this thread and hopefully next year our luck will change, it got to surely ! I will start with a couple =

1) The season kicked off .

2) Steptoe scores in the last minute

3) Have just read this and they had to be playing one of the 3 teams we need to lose if we have any chance of keeping some hope -

Steve Bruce says Newcastle missing 'big chunk' of players for West Brom game due to testing positive for covid 🤷‍♂️

4) Oh this one Billy Sharp keeps forgetting to bring his football boots to the game !

Was reading the Lawro BBC predications and he said that he's not convinced by Leeds keeper Meslier.

The same keeper that put in a performance of a lifetime against us :( though has been questionable in most other games

1. Vardy wasn’t bad luck it was poor play
2.The capitulation against Chelsea was poor play
3.Not turning up for the first 20 minutes V wolves was poor play
4. Not finishing any of the 1001 chances v West Brom was poor play

You can bang in about luck all you want but you earn the right to win and I’ve seen two games all season where we deserved to take something and didn’t (also poor play) ... the other 8 were abysmal.

You can't blame luck for our league position. All teams will have had some bad luck this season, we aren't any different. I do think back to that Villa game though and if we'd not have been down to 10 men a point or 3 MIGHT have been possible and we might have had a bit more confidence into the next game. Instead we started feeling sorry for ourselves and it hasn't really improved since.

If I had to choose anything that is 'luck' related I'd point to injuries, the problem is that it isn't 'bad luck' that the replacements aren't very good, it's poor recruitment.

As you get middle aged you start to see "the signs" of a bad season, and since the Egan red card at Villa this feels like this is one as each week goes by.
Still live in hope of a 90-91 repeat.

Well.... they say you make your own luck in life. Irrespective of that this season has the stink of relegation about it:
1: can’t score
2: can’t keep a clean sheet
3: silly mistakes That lead to goals against
4: heads drop & confidence evaporates
Rinse & repeat. If that carries on for long enough the team gets relegated 🤷‍♂️

The warning signs were there at the end of last season.
Correct if anything even before that.We struggled to put the ball in the net most of last season and was obvious we had a real problem with our strike force.Thought Watkins would have solved it but due to our wages structure he was lost to Villa.

Strongly disagree with Lawro here, Meslier has been really impressive when I've seen him, except when Leeds were thrashed by Palace. Think he'll be at a top European team within 4/5 years tbh. That said, he did probably have his best game against us, so still annoying...

Southampton are allowed 2000 fans in were we can have none in ??? On and on and on and on and on !!

I certainly agree that everything aligned against us last season in an extraordinary way that seemingly could only happen to Sheffield United, at a point when we had seemingly unstoppable momentum. A couple of incidents aside, however, I'm not sure that our struggles this year are due to bad luck.

I am utterly convinced that, at the point the season was suspended, the team was so well-drilled and so clearly in the same mind-set that we had 12 months previously in the promotion run-in, that we would have secured a European finish and would have been in at least the semi-final of the Cup.

There's no way that we wouldn't have won at Villa who were in crisis; no way we'd have folded at Newcastle and Man U with them under pressure from their fickle and critical crowds; no way we wouldn't have overcome Everton with the Lane rocking for the final home match; and no way a flaky Arsenal team would have won at the Lane in the Cup.

Our extreme misfortune was that all the advantage of our momentum was killed and, moreover, that the established clubs were given 3 months in which to reset their focus and get all their big players back from injury for the restart. A number of clubs (e.g. Man U, Newcastle, Arsenal) were also able to play free from the hindrance of their negative crowds which completely changed the dynamic.

We then topped it off, of course, with that fateful 'final training session' before the re-start at Villa when Fleck got injured and Henderson crocked JOC utterly pointlessly in a 'full-tilt training game'. Talk about 'sliding-doors moments' in the club's history. No wonder, Wilder was unusually spiky in his post-match interview after the Villa game.

This season, though, we have arguably had some fortune but simply haven't been good enough to capitalise on it.

We were handed Wolves first up at the Lane, when Wolves had had no pre-season; we had Villa where it was their first game so we theoretically we had the advantage of having a game under our belts; we were handed 2 of the promoted sides within the first 3 home games; we played at Liverpool when they were in the throes of a defensive crisis; and Man City came to the Lane without their strikers and struggling for goals.

Yes, we had misfortune with Egan's sending off at Villa but even then, it was our own ineptitude from the penalty spot that ensured we didn't come home with the points; Villa did next to nothing in that game. Similarly, we were unfortunate that Arsenal weren't reduced to 10 men inside 5 minutes but, ultimately, until our abysmal substitutions, that was a game that was not going to be lost because Arsenal were doing nothing. And the referee got it wrong against Leeds but, we still failed to take any number of gilt-edged chances against one of the leakiest defences in the division.

As I keep telling my 8 year old - you make your own luck in this world.

Losers whinge and moan about bad luck. Winners go away and practice/train hard to minimise the effects luck has.

As others have said, missing chances at West Brom wasn't bad luck - poor execution, Egan consistently getting caught out with the ball over the top - poor positioning/anticipation, hoping Norwood/Berge will wake one day and be a dominating/ball playing CDM - wishful thinking.

100% this for me. We’ve had some bad luck I agree, but we’ve also failed to act on the good luck that’s swung our way. Having both and continuing down this route will only lead us one way.

vs Liverpool - Villa proved that their defence was leaky, so shoot shoot shoot. Our goal was a pen with minimal shots on target. One of the weakest Liverpool teams we’re likely to face and didn’t capitalise.

vs Villa - Missed a pen while the defence was relatively solid. Score that and we’re at worst looking at a point.

vs West Ham - No creative striker in Antonio, leaving out of form Halley as the danger man. Mark him harder and he’s less likely to score.

vs Man City - Their strikers injured and we concede to a grass cutter from miles out. It is unfortunately enough as we offer nothing going forward.

vs West Brom - More than enough chances to win comfortably and none taken.

vs Leeds - See West Brom.

vs Arsenal - Didn’t really turn up and the score line flattered us.

vs Leicester - Generally outplayed but again made chances. No luck either way in this game just weren’t good enough.

We don’t take advantage of what’s in front of us, like Wilder says.

We haven't been unlucky at all. The players are broken.
Their manager, the guy who motivates them, keeps telling the world in every interview that his team can't go toe to toe with the opposition because they haven't got the quality.
Imagine hearing that every week?? It's a funny way of getting your players to believe in themselves.

Those belong in the "Poor Play Thread", not in the "Bad Luck Thread"

It's called the truth.

Have you thought about when we played Fulham, they missed a pen and we got a very iffy one to get our only point of the season. Where was the bad luck that day ?
That belongs in the "Good Luck Thread", not the "Bad Luck Thread"
