I could be wrong but I seem to remember us playing a friendly here at BDTBL in the 60s against Eintract Frankfurt and, if my memory hasn't gone altogether, They played in red that night.

I can't remember the exact year but it was the year after Real Madrid beat them in the old European Cup final 7-2. I do remember Ferenc Puscas and Alfredo DeStafano from Real Madrid being the best footballers I had ever seen (apart from Joe Shaw)

I am quite sure we played in all white kit in the FA Cup replay against Fulham at BDTBL in February 1967. Fulham wore in all red kit when we played them at Craven Cottage so they must have worn the same kit for the replay. Bill Punton got two goals that night

Don't remember that SB,but I can remember Fulham in an all blue strip at the Lane in '68...we were 2-0 up and lost 3-2... I was only 8 but sensed what was going to happen even then...gutted.
That red kit Coventry were in though, just looked wrong at the Lane...don't mind the white kit,but I'll be glad to get back in the Red and White stripes.

Exactly what I'd have done in their position. Rub our noses in it.
Well remember the documentary Sky did on Warnock. Starts off with him talking to fans in pre-season (Matlock I believe) and him bemoaning our change to red shorts for that season (2003/04 I think) and how this would be "unlucky" for us. Lot's of people, in and around the game, are superstitious about such things. We went from finishing 3rd to 8th that season.
Worth noting both Sheffield clubs went down to Div3 for the first time in their history having ditched stripes.

.

Not correct I am afraid. Wednesday went to the Arsenalesque kit in the mid sixties and reverted back to stripes in 1972. They went down to Div 3 for the first time in 1975. We were relegated to Div 3 for the first time in 1979 wearing stripes and ditched them for the first season in Div 3.

We won 3-1.

My Wendy supporting uncle told me that many were not happy with the club for ditching the stripes in 1965

Here on the other hand, you only have to switch to pinstripes for a one-off shirt for a season and it's a hanging offence!
No, hangings to good for em, there's gonna be a fire, a huge fire

An away defeat at Scunny should set things smouldering for the evil shirt, and its followers .....................

What colour did Latvia play in when we had them in the most random friendly of all time, mid season in around 2000/01? There home shirt is usually red.

It really boiled my piss that they turned up in red and white. There was a clash with our kit when it was absolutely unnecessary given that their home kit would have been absolutely fine. I note we've unnecessarily work our away kit on a few occasions as well. is it something clubs do now to help them sell the away shirts? Just another example of the shitty, money obsessed way the modern game has gone.

Kit superstition is not confined to us - I read somewhere (think it was on a pigs sight when I was researching John Fantham) that the pigs thought a striped kit with a central white stripe was unlucky. Like us they seem to dislike stripes of unequal thickness and ideally want 2" stripes. Must be the Sheffield water.

yes, was a silky kit very strange for that period
West Brom wore the all red kit against us in the league at BDTBL? What colour shirts were we wearing? I remember reading a lot of match reports and photos from Green Un/Morning Telegraph archives (in the Central Library) about 14 years ago when doing a research on Woody's goals and assists. On Monday I had a flashback recalling that I thought there was something unusual when I saw a photo of Bill Punton scoring against Fulham (it was a lob over the keeper) in the 1967 FA Cup replay at BDTBL. I believe he was wearing an all white kit. It reminded me of how confused I was when I first watched highlights of Fulham v Blades (at Craven Cottage in 1967) from the BBC MOTD video in 1991. I was trying to work out why Fulham were wearing a dark kit as I wasnt aware that FA Cup had strange rules on kits if colours clashed.

From the Morning Telegraph archives I also remember being surprised to see a photo of Woody's goal in the 4-3 win against WBA in October 1966, the Blades were wearing white shorts. Until 2001 or 2002 I had always thought we wore white shorts only in the 1967/68, 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons. I had discovered from the archives that we did wear white shorts for some of of the home games in the 1966/67 season. It started when the ref ordered us to wear different shorts for our home game against Spurs in Sept 1966 because spurs had brought their black shorts. We won 2-1 that night. The club then decided we should carry on wearing the "lucky" white shorts until December. In 11 home games with the white shorts that season we won 7, drew 2 and lost 2. The losses were in the last two of the 11 match run (against Leicester and against Birmingham in the League Cup). Then we started wearing the black shorts again for the 1-1 home draw against Arsenal and it continued for the rest of the home games of the 1966/67 season (except for the home replay against Fulham, I think)

I have vivid recollection of west broms all red kit when you think about it its the same as an all white kit as a change
half our shirts were white
the shorts and socks are what refs looked at most .

Ok. Will go to the Library probably in the New Year

Sorry to piss on your bonfire pal but we finished 8th the season before the red shorts came in

So working on the superstition that a drastic change of kit means the team equals the previous season's final league position, we're going to finish 5th again this season. And probably lose.

However on a much lighter note, the following season when we reverted back to the traditional stripes we finished 2nd - so there's light at the end of the tunnel yet!

.....or if you're a glass half full kinda guy we might finish 5th, win the playoffs, then finish 2nd in the championship next season. One can dream!
