Why were we wearing our away kit at Chedsterfield? Did the ref see a really minor "clash" like the one that saw Scotland forced to change into their highlighter pink kits vs. England other night?

Stupid if he did. No one is going to confuse red and white stripes with almost solid blue! :D

If it's like other (PL) clubs we'll be contractually obliged to wear it in a certain amount of games...

Not sure if that's the exact reason for yesterday.

It's a lazy piece of design which just looks like the black Macron one we had a few seasons ago with the red pinstripe.

Like the OP, I was expecting to see us in red and white stripes yesterday but no, they trot out that abomination of an away kit which is a shame cos the home shirt is a belter.
Black & orange. Go together well as an away kit, I like it.

It's shit. It's a poor design and doesn't feel unitedy in any way. That said, if we get promotion in it then I couldn't give a toss.

Acknowledged Finlay but I just wish we could have a bit more individuality with our away stuff.

Didn't we have a black away strip after our relegation from the Premier League as well as the black shirt with the diagonal orange stripe a couple of years ago? (That one was much better than this season's imo) To my knowledge, that's four black away kits in less than ten years.

Some designs created by people on the forum are fabulous, it would be brilliant if the club allowed the fans to submit designs and then vote for their favourite.

Shirts lovely, but the orange shorts need to fuck off.

But to be honest I'm just happy it's not yet another yellowy/lime greeny one. We've well and truly done that to death.

Totally agree. I hate it. Dreadful orange shorts. Total embarrassment. As others have said why the f--k couldn't we play in our proper strip, red and white stripes? Presumably it's something to do with money somewhere along the line? Still if we win 4-1 why should we care?

It's been proven that teams that play in black away kits win 40% more than teams that play in lighter colours.

Given the point of the kit is to avoid a clash of colours, that should rule out red and white. We can't really use blue, so the colour range is a bit restricted. Yellow, green, black, grey, orange, purple, brown , pink and variations thereof.

In fairness, the couple of times we've had a navy blue away kit, they've been very nice ones.
And of course the famous brown striped kit from the early-80's is a cult classic.

Yes but given there was no clash between red and white stripes and the blue Chezza strip why did we need to wear an "away" strip. Why can't we just change when there is an obvious clash with the home team's strip.

Didn't mind either of the Navy blue kits. I like the brown stripe because we won wearing it loads, not because it's a particularly pleasing design. And the comment which always makes me laugh when commenting on an away kit is 'not very United is it?' Isn't that the point??

It used to be the case, before football sold its soul to Nike, Adidas et al.

Just looks like Wendy's away kit to me!
And they copied the style or our forest away home kit.

Apparently it was because it was on TV. The stripes would have caused picture anomalies for folk watching in Chesterfield on 625 lines on UHF.

Can anyone answer the OP question ? Why change kit when it doesn't clash ? Or will you say the white shorts constitute a clash on their own ?

We wore all navy blue at Stoke, Liverpool, Arsenal and probably Middlesbrough in the 1974/75 season. Our fans werent happy about it despite us finishing in 6th place

sung to green tambourine , for us oldies

Watch the mighty blades start to shine.
with sharpy and clarkey well be fine
When we score a goal you'll hear us sing.
watch us while we play ay ay ay
in black and tangerine

Obviously but actually this season we do seem to have played away in our red and white stripes quite a bit. E.g. Bradford so thought may be CW has said bollocks to Nike etc its more important to keep our real identity.
