Avoiding relegation next season

Don’t we have the same group that beat Chelsea Wolves and Spurs recently ? So why should we struggle, especially if a few good to better players are added.

Second season syndrome is a myth. If anything it should be called 1st season syndrome.

Here are all the PL clubs that have been relegated and number of seasons spent in the PL before their relegation.

Aston Villa (24)
Barnsley (1)
Birmingham (4), (1), (2)
Blackburn (7), (11)
Blackpool (1)

Wolves (1), (3)

Relegations in season 1 = 36
Relegations in season 2 = 12
Relegations in season 3 = 5
Relegations in season 4 = 4
Relegations in season 5 = 2
Relegations in 6+ seasons = 24

Myth !

Worth noting too that these figures are from 1992/93 - PL era only, so United's 2nd season syndrome in 93/94 was actually our 4th consecutive top flight

If 36 first season relegations out of a total of 83, (43%), doesn't constitute a myth, what does?

Looks like it's heading towards mythical to me!
In fact, if you add in 12 second season relegations, that's 58% - not good reading because knowing the Blades .....

Of course the first two seasons will be the hardest.

IF we lose Deana AND IF we also lose some of the starting 11 and don't make any signings.
BUT
CW has said he intends to strengthen up front and defence.

Let's see before we have a panic attack.

Many of the teams relegated in their 2nd. season were less than convincing in their first , but that's not the case with us .

We've already demonstrated that we have both the players and the management / coaching and fitness staff capable of producing performances good enough to take points from all but the very best .

Add to this the fact that CW doesn't do relegation and I don't see us struggling , providing we have a decent replacement for Hendo whose departure seems inevitable .

so, effectively relegation in the second season is 66% less likely than Relegation in the first.

mall I will say is that 11 teams finished below us, 8 of which Will be with us next season as well. Those 8 have work to do to maintain that position and avoid regressing.
Add to that, Palace will lose Zaha. Their best player by a mile. They will be badly affected by finances the same as us. I see them fairing worse.
Brighton struggles at times and may struggle again. Southampton will be in bother if they lose Ings.

so we aren’t the i ly
Ones with problems, what we have to our advantage is having Wilder, and smaller pressure on finances compared to other teams with much higher wage bills.
I hope we are able to get some creativity and serious pace and skill up front, and maintain the back line with some additions to the squad to deal with injuries etc.
Obviously the keeper problem is a major issue to resolve too. Hendo has been great, though he hasn’t been encouraged to take risks with the kicking and has been asked to simply save shots. We will be able to find a keeper who’s up to that with a similar percentage. Ramsdale is just as good a shot stopper IMHO, just needs a few errors ironing out IMHO

So, now it seems we don’t have resources to add to our attacking threat. We’ve been warned that we won’t see any big signings this window. We don’t have a goalkeeper – oh, sorry we do have Wes Foderingham and some Belgian enigma. Couple of the starting eleven may leave or need to be sold. Second season -syndrome seems to be at least partially confirmed as being true. Teams coming up from the Championship will be stronger than the ones that got relegated.

So, is it ’wrist slashing’ to think that we have a hell of a task ahead of us just trying to avoid relegation next season? Which teams could we better?

Personally, I’m seriusly concerned.

Anyways, I know anything like this is not supposed to be posted on here, so come on you happy-clappers! Destroy me and my points.

(Btw. I’m also a ’happy-clapper’ - but that is for wrist slashing only! :p)
The Wendy forum isn't called S24SU, that's the first clue!🖕👉

Brentford have been in the top flight before they renamed it the Premier League

Indeed, one of the top teams in the country apparently for a brief period. I just assumed "second season syndrome" being a thing was part of the bullshit that came with the Premier League though.

Think I read somewhere the other day that only 1 in 10 teams to finish above the bottom 6 in the first season have been relegated in season 2

Keep it coming.
здравствуй westsiberiablade, как жизнь? именно где живёшь в сибире? интересно будет узнать. я в киеве.
Pažálusta! You Nazi-Mao. ;) I'm not that far in the east that I could speak the language, been told by my grandpa to shoot at people talking that way. ;)

Which papers have said we don't have resources ? If they are unreliable why are you quitting them? What 'common sense' is being applied to say we dont have resources ?
As a whole all the newspaper accounts are unreliable, as we know. That's what I alluded to.

For heaven's sake for all of your allusions to me being a Wendnesday fan, smelling of pork etc. I won't quit supporting the Blades just because of you behaving like idiots. There are idiots in evey clubs support, at the end of the day. Seems like very few commentators have anything to say to the issues I raised.

Add to the end of this data that Wolves haven't suffered from it and Fulham and Cardiff went straight back down and I think it's clear that Second season syndrome is a load of bollocks.

And here's a bit more from this very same message board

And if you think "bye" is the same as "fuck off" then you must get into a lot of fights.
Being condescending doesn't help

The Jawdies continuing soap opera is helpful but Leeds and Brentford, if they make it, could do quite well.
On the other hand you'd hope WBA might struggle.
Brighton seem determined to improve, Southampton definitely will improve and looked a good side in the second half of the season.
West Ham still seem unconvincing, as do Villa and Everton (though they never go down), and Palace definitely look at bit iffy.
Without strengthening we could have a tough season in store.

2nd season syndrome is a myth so don't worry about that. I have no idea where the term comes from and it's just something lazy pundits say. It is much harder to stay up in your first season than your 2nd as stats prove.

We are only 4 days into the transfer window so again I wouldn't worry about the goalkeeper situation either.

Wilder said we wouldn't spend much last season and we spent over £70m so I'd take his comments with a pinch of salt.

No idea why you think some of the starting 11 may need to be sold. If anyone is sold it will be because Wilder thinks the money will strengthen us elsewhere. Just like he did with Brooks.

Nobody knows if the teams coming up from the Championship will be better. Last season 2 of the 3 survived which is rare. Of those 3, Villa were tipped to do the best by a fair margin and only ended up staying up because Watford decided it would be a good idea to appoint 4 managers in 1 season. Villa are one of the worst teams to ever stay up but this time last year most pundits were saying they would have no trouble adapting to The Premier League. Same as they are now with Leeds Meanwhile they were saying we were nailed on to go down. Same as they are now with WBA. Nobody knows how a newly promoted team will react to a higher level until the season starts.

As for teams we could finish above, well there are 11 of them based on this season. Even if you go by the post lockdown table we were 13th. This despite the fact we were playing 3 games a week , had loads of injuries and ended the season with Leon Clarke up front.

We could obviously go down next season. Nobody knows for sure but based purely on logic gained from last season there is nothing at all pointing towards it. The only thing people are basing their worries on seem to be post lockdown form (which wasn't anything like relegation form) and the baseless theory that everyone but us will improve.

I just don’t understand why anyone would have us to struggle big time in our second season. If you’ve seen us under Wilder then you surely know there’s no chance of us resting on our laurels. It’s a major insult to the team and management that have gotten us to where we are. Some fans are just naturally full of anxiety at the prospect of the good times coming to a close.

I wonder if any other set of fans would see their club finish 9th in the Premier League in their first season back for 12 years and immediately start talking about going down the season after.

Some proper PTSD issues within our fan base and whilst I understand it given stuff that's gone on in the past, I just think if your anxiety outweighs your enjoyment right now you will never be happy supporting United.

we lost to just 3 teams below 5th
its how we operate
those we beat couldn't handle us then , if CW tweaks it a bit we might have bigger wins

the season is barely over and the doom sayers are chomping at the bit to find fault
the unless we spend 200m in the next 4 weeks we might as well give in argument is just as invalid next season as it was last

villa spent 3 times more than us and look where they finished

spending for spending sake is not a good idea

Last time I was worried about a 2nd season syndrome after being 3 down at boro after what seemed like about 15 minutes, we ended up doing "alright" after that and I realised I should worry about other things. We might start shit next season and lose a couple and people will start soiling themselves but don't worry we haven't got John carver/Micky adams/David weir involved we will be alright.

Hopefully now the Newcastle takeover is off the Price can get some Saudi investment in through the back door 😉😉

I optimistically thought the same when I heard the NUFC takeover was off, surely as a wealthy investment fund you have identified the fact that a member of what is a very large family owns a top ten premier league football club and is trying to push on. I agree with Roygbiv on the latest bladespod we probably need upwards of 10 new players if the premier league oks the 5 subs thing and to offset any released/sold players. It’s a worry if we have a tight budget, but wilder he can do miracles you know. UTB! lets just hope the Saudi‘s don’t go for Leeds, not sure I could cope with anymore arrogance.

What ever, mate. I've been following the Blades from a far since the early 1990's. And I'm not the only one of us who spend years before registering into forums and taking part in discussions. Mostly because it's the kind of sh*te you're sprouting out here. I live abroad, am not an English citizen, spend loads of money supporting and following the Blades - but to you I'm pork. Okay.
I got called the same, I've realized that unless your post on here is that Wilder is God and Billy sharp is the new Jimmy greaves you will be called Pork, oh and if you ever refer to Sheffield Wednesday in any post, you CANNOT call them Wednesday, you have to call them, pigs, scum, pork, or something like that otherwise that means you support them

I got called the same,
but in fairness your post was very, very dubious. And then you changed the title and posted it again. It was a typical posting that an 'undercover' Wednesday fan would have tried, I still think you are Wednesday the alternative being you are just daft.

As for the OP, my guess is he just wanted to start a thread but didn't want to start yet another 'let's praise the team/Wilder/ the prince' thread.

Undoubtedly going to be more difficult this coming season. Oppo managers have played us twice and will be devising ways to nulify our style of play. However CWAK know this and will have a trick or two up their sleeve.

One thing I'm utterly convinced of is we will have a stronger squad by mid September than we do now....and the one we have now just finished 9th so I don't see us struggling. The days of selling our best players for anything other than silly money are gone. If we were to lose Egan or JOC we will have a hell of a sum of money to replace them.

Also for those expecting a big spree this summer don't forget Sanders transfer was originally budgeted for now not January so that needs taking into account.

Anyway sides I expect to be worse than us next season...at least 2 of and probably all 3 promoted ones, Villa, Brighton, West Ham, Palace. Ones similar to us Everton, Southampton, Burnley...so even if we regress we have plenty of headroom in my opinion.

Genuinely interested as to why you think Southampton maybe worse than us next season, they did the double over us, finished the season unbeaten in 6 or 7, won 5 games post lockdown, including man city, have a 20 goal a season striker and some quality young players, I'd be interested to know what you are basing that belief on , similarly west ham, yes they had a crap start but they have much much more quality than we do all throughout the side
