Attending Bramall Lane for non football reasons

A couple of times I've attended work conferences at the conference rooms on John Street overlooking the pitch. It always seems wrong. On the one hand there is a mundane conversation about procedures and policies, however when I look out of the windows I can see the pitch where so many dreams have been made and shattered. To be honest I'd rather attend conferences at Hillsborough and attend Bramall Lane for solely footballing reasons!

I was playing the cavalry trumpet in the National Scout Band Championship at BDTBL in about 1976. For the 6th Doncaster (Hallgate) .... we got a spin-off gig, halftime at WBA v Spurs which was fun because the Spurs lot had a pitch invasion around us (it was stirring stuff).

Also taken to a few cricket matches in earlier times..... apparently (as a toddler) I held play up running behind the bowler's arm and Percy Holmes, sitting next to my Dad told him not to stop me because Yorkshire were doing so badly.

A work colleagues funeral ,he was killed on a jet ski at Ripon race course. I remember I was on the Atkins diet at the time and it was a very hot day and I could smell a very distinct smell of meat. I realised it was me and ate loads of veg at the buffet in a vain attempt to rid myself of the odour.
Also once a month I used to go to the singles night with my Dad and his mate. It was all a bit sad but the odds were about 5/1 women ,you simply couldnt fail.

A few cricket matches, back in the day. I saw Len Hutton, Denis Compton, and the visiting West Indies side that contained the legendary Ramadin and Valentine ("those two little friends of mine").
A favourite was J.W.H.T. Wardle. My cousin told me the letters stood for "Johnny will hit today".

It was good. One year we got out the door and ran about on the pitch. Great fun it was.

A work colleagues funeral ,he was killed on a jet ski at Ripon race course. I remember I was on the Atkins diet at the time and it was a very hot day and I could smell a very distinct smell of meat. My twin uncles took me to watch the first day of Yorkshire v Worcestershire in June 1971 as I wanted to see Ted Hemsley play. I wasn't that really interested in cricket until 1975 and when Ted Hemsley got out for only 6, I wanted to go home but my twin uncles werent happy so we agreed to leave when Ron Headley got out. He got out for 80 runs. My next cricket match was Derbyshire v Australians at Queens Park in Chesterfield in July 1975 and I persuaded my dad (who had no interest in cricket) to take me

As a bit of an incentive to join the 'Blades Revival' scheme, there was a keep fit session held at the Lane every Monday.
Used to go down with a few mates and got full use of the changing rooms, access via the tunnel to do laps of the pitch and usually finished off with a five a side in the old gym.
One of the players would also be in attendance to supervise (John Gannon was brilliant, couldn't do enough)
Don't know why it stopped, but miss it.

He was an Olympic Boxer too - and I've only heard of him because there was a little article about him in a sticker book that I had as a souvenir for the Munich Olympics .. edited by Ross McWhirter which explains the odd lapse into racism.

A guy called Simon Cave who owned a company in Sheffield called capital express ,had a work bonding weekend at Ripon racecourse on the lake jet skiing and unfortunately one of his employees crashed into him killing him instantly. I worked with Simon for many years ,the funeral was awful at Abbey Lane then the wake at the Lane. A very sad time and unfortunately his wife couldn't keep his business going and it was sold on for a fraction of its worth .

On another cricket theme ....... after the new stand was built there was a limited overs match under floodlights. Think it might have been Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Notts ?? Only player I can remember was Sir Richard Hadlee. Can anyone shed more light on this as I can hardly remember any of it ! ?
