In 1945/46 we win the Football League North and then in season 1949/50 we find ourselves in the second division.

Sounds typical Blades, 1974/75 & 1975/76 springs to mind.

50,586 - there was an opportunity of seeing Jimmy Hagan and Tom Finney on the same pitch.

Just looked at the final league table 1949/50. Reminds me of the 2011/12 season.

That was of course the highest ever single day attendance across the 4 divisions. Only one record attendance record which still stands was set that day - the crowd at Ayresome Park remains the most for a Middlesbrough home game at any of their grounds.

The season aggregate record, which still stands, was set the season before, 1948-9.

There will have been some tight squeezes. 26,000 in Saltergate and 43,000 in Fratton Park sound like crazy numbers.

Boothferry Park was a relatively new ground then - it was opened just after the War. Hull had just won Division 3 North and were having their best season since before World War 1. They attracted some massive crowds during those years for big games. Mind you, so did everyone else. 6 of our 8 seasons of average gates of over 30,000 were between 1948 and 1954.

If goal difference was in use in 1949/50, we had exactly the same as Wednesday +19 then the team who scored more goals would have been promoted. We scored 68, they scored 67.

Yes, we would have gone up if it was a 2-2 draw.

If it was 1-1 then both Sheffield clubs would have exactly the same goal average but we won one more game than they did, not sure if at the time "more wins" decided on places when clubs had the same points and same goal averages.
