What were the crowds at the Lane for Bruce Springsteen and Billy Graham?

Old school out of touch Rockers and "we'll believe any old shit" religious freaks.

PS. Beaten to the punch again, but I did type a lot more words than NYB.

I went to see Billy Graham with my mates from the sixth form, in an adolescently self consciously trendy atheist laughing at all the religious maniacs way.

I don't know how many were at the Lane for Springsteen but you could hear it miles away. I sat could hear him from my mam's back garden in Rotherham. Must have been freak wind/environmental conditions. Probably the reason we never had anymore gigs at the Lane since.

Not sure about Bruce, but recall Billy Graham's "gig" drew a crowd around the 48,000 mark.

No news on how quickly all the pies were sold out.

That would have been rather helped by the fact that there was no charge to entry and meant that curious people like me who wouldn't have paid 50p for a religious event went along.

44,000 for Springsteen, fantastic concert and I wasn't even a fan.

Funniest story I heard was a mates dad who lived at Brecks in Rotherham, went to the front door because he thought he could hear the Sally Army band coming up the road, it was the reverberations from Bruce at the Lane.

We could hear it in Maltby, 14 miles away. The events took their toll on the pitch though. You would have thought that Billy Graham could have summoned up some help from a friend to to fix it.

If only Danny Wilson (the gentleman) had been around in those days, he would have sorted it.
Come to think about it, Tony Currie was walking on water in those days, he could have helped too

My Mum once gathered me and my sister together to watch the "marching band".
It turned out to be my Dad sat on the bog playing "Colonel Bogey" (or similar) on the mouth organ.

I know there is an eagerness with wanting to do more and to open up the lane to other events including those of this nature (perhaps not Bruce, or that scale), but I think the issue these days as ever is the protection of the pitch, safety advisory committee and licensing.

Nowadays you can protect the pitch more easily.

I think it's been said (by the club) that the only issues are licensing (due to noise later than normal football) and safety.

There was talk of Kell Brook fighting at the lane this summer

Been Kelly Brook then it may have got more people.

You can of course protect it more easily from the immediate impact of different usage. What you can't protect it from is the lack of care, attention and maintenance that would inevitably happen whilst it was being "protected". Which is why (along with the licensing and safety) there is only a small window of opportunity at the end of the season for other usage.

It was indeed talked about by the club at one of the last forums (that we tweeted and covered on here). Watch this space for another :)

I went there too and decided to become a Christian that day and still am today. Not all of us are Bible bashers or religious freaks/maniacs, just like not all atheists are Dawkins rotweilers or non-religious freaks. Many of us support Blades in fact (ok I must be a freak to support blades :) ).

I cant stand religion but am rebelious enough to believe in Jesus (even in 2013), and for what its worth, proud of it.

I would loved to see Springsteen play there aswell.

Clem Attlee once said apropos Christianity that he believed in the ethics, but not the mumbo jumbo. That just about sums up my position. I don't believe in God or any concept of a future life. I think thats just wishful thinking. However, its pretty obvious to me that my whole ethical, moral and political position is heavily influenced by Chrsitianity.

Fair enough mate, totally get where youre coming from. I actually think that belief in God or non belief both require faith as we can't prove the argument conclusively either way.

I'm reading a book at the moment by a former athiest called "Who rolled away the stone". If you've not heard of it
the guy starts out the book trying to disprove the ressurection happened and ends up believing its true due to the hard evidence, its quite a read!

Didnt think I'd end up talking about God on this forum, so I'll avoid saying anymore for fear of being called a preacher :)

Feel free to debate the subject, I enjoy it.

My take on God is an evidential one - the existence of a God is so unlikely (given that the world seems to operate in a random way without any sign of good people being rewarded and bad people punished) that it would take strong evidence to convince me of his existence and, to me, the evidence just isn't there.

Ok then, I'll have a chat, please stop me if I become too religious maniac/freakish :)

Firstly then, why do you think on this earth good people will be rewarded and bad people will be punished?
Also what do you define as good and bad? What do you define as random? Do you know how unlikely it is that we exist at all?

Secondly, You said, "without any evidence of people being rewarded and bad people punished".

Lets look at the recent news, 3 guys have been sent down today living in Brum for plotting terrorism.
The police reckon it could have been worse than 7/7. They will spend most of the rest of their lives in prison.
Have I found the first known example of evidence of bad people being punished?

It's probably going to be too late to debate this tonight (as I'm a tired parent of 2 young boys who will wake me up at the crack of dawn!), but i'd love to pick it up again tomorow if youre game Darren?

All the best, Gavlar.

Can we start a campaign to get Brucie back? I was too young the first time. But that would be awesome.

The author of this book used to be a die-hard atheist until a series of strange coincidences made her think again. (She's also the author sadly out-of-print Blades-centric teenage novel United on Vacation)

By the way, I was at both Bruce and Billy Graham. If I remember, the stage was at the BL end of the ground for Bruce, while Billy's "pulpit" was in the South Stand. I knew a lass working at the bar for Springsteen and got a few highly-discounted ales, so the gig was a bit of a blur. Definitely loud though. And I think he donated the proceeds of the gig to the striking miners. It was probably some time after the strike was over but there was still a lot of hardship.

Ha! Me too. I only went so that I could down on the pitch like my sisters had but ended up becoming a Christian. I have certainly looked back since (I think I was 8 at the time ) but it was the start of something. I'm about to complete my masters in Divinity and am just blown away at the intricacies of how the Bible is put together. I don't expect everyone to believe but I do expect everyone to at least think about it after-all, it *could* (and *is* in my opinion) be a matter of life or death.
I appreciate your openness on this subject Darren and Gavlar. I don't think I've ever been called a religious freak to my face, however! ;)

I saw the Sunday Springsteen concert and to be honest, it was bloody great.

On a different, evangelical note, I once was engaged to a young woman whose father was a kind of Sheffield version of Billy Graham, preaching to the masses. He was even a close friend of Billy, having being involved in some way in the bringing of him to Sheffield, and had I actually been stupid enough to have married said wench then apparently the aforementioned fire-and-brimstoneist would have been at the event.

Now, some of you on here have met me, (a few have even met the current Mrs SV) and I bet not one of you could see me and Mr Graham getting on, especially considering at the time I was in the pub trade and about the only things I could do with anything even remotely approaching religious zeal were consume vast amounts of alcoholic beverages, chain-smoke Marlboro Lights, and swear with weapons-grade quality when drunk, and limit the swearing to merely industrial strength when sober. Not a combination that would delight any Southern Baptist loony, certainly.

I consider it to have been a rather narrow squeak in escaping the clutches of said woman, who had a rather grasping tendency with my wallet, and I never even met Mr Graham. I do know that her father used to say "God bless you" a lot and you could tell he really meant it. Properly, fire-in-his-eyes meant it. He's probably damned me to hell for corrupting his daughter, but hey, I can live with that, what with the devil having all the best tunes anyway.
