In 5 minutes of game time and 5 minutes of injury time I saw why Hammond shouldn't play.

James Wallace..............can you stay fit though?

Nigel 2 is very defensive of his players. Again this evening, in response to a question about fans' criticism of Dean Hammond, he said again that he does a lot of work that fans don't appreciate. That may be true, I don't understand the game as well as Nigel 2, but I haven't seen Hammond contribute anything so far. He then went on to say that he had every confidence in Hammond and asked us to stick with him. That suggests an element of backtracking.

As somebody said in another thread, he also backed George Long and said it was a "great punch" for their first goal. It really wasn't, and that sounds like Nigel 2 defending the indefensible. It's one thing not to criticise them in public, it's quite another to try and pull the wool over fans' eyes, which is what he sometimes sounds like.

Long's punch was fine. Having that much space on the edge of the box wasn't

Just what game are you watching. Him and Hammond hide and very rarely offer themselves for throwings, yet I come on here and Long is the one getting chucked under the bus

I wasn't throwing him under the bus, I was giving an example of Nigel's flawed vision. Sorry, but a great punch doesn't drop at the edge of the area, it lands in the centre circle. As an ex-custodian, you should know that tubby :-)

I agree with you, he showed confidence on this occasion and many more by coming for the cross and clearing the ball. The fact that it landed at the foot of a opposing player, and he then produced an inch perfect strike to score a goal, was just rank bad luck in my opinion.

I'll have to watch it again but it looked as though he should have caught it for me, rather than flap it away.

He didn't flap it away - he punched it away a good distance. That's his job. He did it very well.

If you want to get hung up on technicalities you can start talking about wet and slippery balls...but even if it had been glorious sunshine punching is fine.

What was not so good was the Southend player on the edge of the area who had the Blades Midfielder Exclusion Zone around him.

I thought Long had a surprisingly good game today. One of many positives.

Highlights up on another thread btw.

He's not got enough weight to get that distance on it. Needs to put on a few pounds. ;)

I don't mind a keeper punching as long as he gets good distance on it and deals with it. Especially in the 6 yard box it is percentages and a lot of keepers choose to punch now. Joe Hart does.

It was a good punch, got good distance on it. As others have said it was poor defending to allow their midfielder that much space on the edge of the box.

That and when they hit a good strike against the post it went in off it. I have not been Long's biggest fan by any means but he didnt do much wrong today.

Just more hot air out of his arse.

He's "well aware" though!!??!!

I wonder if he has a pre-prepared phrase for "My managerial performance has been unbelievably poor".

Not to worry, he's going to sign some more players. Old ones, slow ones, and un-athletic ones only though.

Oh and you have to remember he turns the priority list upside down before he works through it. It's the Adkins-logic. Of course, nobody can question his decisions. He managed a team of Southampton youth players developed by someone else, but still, you can't question him.

I'm going to be glad to see the back of him that's for sure.

Just watched the highlights, he did punch it tbf. I still think the majority of keepers would have caught it. But I agree, other than that he did have a good game and deserves to keep No.1 (atleast until we sign a better keeper :) )
