Ashley Ward

Was ordinary on a good day, but behind the story of how he achieved his physique, hair transplant etc was the house building business that his wife, with help from Ashley's footballing income, was able to make possible. Well done him for ensuring that life after football wasn't a downhill affair.

I'm told he was brilliant with his feet and terrible in the air.

You’re half-right. My only memory of him doing anything remotely useful was in the Leeds game at home where he scored a surprising goal. Surprising because he correctly timed a through-ball by Tonge, surprising because he didn’t tangle his own legs in the course of moving towards the box, even more surprisingly managing to outpace whichever sluggish Leeds defender was chasing back, and to cap it off managed to hit the ball accurately into the goal. It was truly a thing of wonder – he capped it off by not elbowing anyone in the face in the move, and didn’t appear to injure himself during his celebrations of the goal.

This was the sort of once-in-a-lifetime moment you never forget, like watching a half of a a game when John Ebbrell appeared, or that time Nick Montgomery scored the goal of the season.

Was OK with his chest. That's about it. I really didn't like him.

Ward had a very good reputation as a goal scorer when he played for Barnsley.
Big physical presence, target man, good in the air and decent with his feet, we hoped he could be a Brian Deane type.

However when he played for us he was so underwhelming, physical presence was all he gave us, seemed slow, sluggish and slightly overweight, didn’t show much with his feet either, just a big lump up front who was difficult to push off the ball.

Although he always made sure he had a tan and a fancy haircut. Put him in the bad signing list.

Poor man's Andy Gray (footballer, born 1977)

For any younger fans out there, Ward could be compared to being a slightly better version of Michael Higdon.

Possibly the worst "striker" ever to pull on a blades shirt utter gash.

Wayne Allison did a good job for the blades. Nice bloke too.

Wayne Allison was an aging lower league striker that we used to bring on late in games as a battering ram. He was a hero for some of the big games he played in and for giving his all but he was not exactly a top quality player. Also, I said a shit version of him.

No he wasn't a top quality player, but he had some quality attributes. His hold up play, work rate and general calming effect on the team when seeing a game out was excellent.

The hard thing to put in context is this is an era of football where United fans enjoyed such strikers as Laurent D'Jaffo and yet the words Ashley Ward stand out as especially poor.

I think the issue with Ward wasn’t so much that he was poor. It was more about expectation.
The local Barnsley fans really rated him as a top striker, he came with a good reputation, so think we paid him big wages by our standards so we pinned our hopes on him and he was a big let down.

The likes of D’jaffo and Allison were just bit part strikers trying their best, so were more appreciated.
Think I remember Allison playing in the Liverpool league cup semi and Sammy Hyppia really struggled against him. Wayne “Lead boots” Alison was built like a fridge and impossible to knock off the ball. Think Warnock just told him to stand in the penalty spot area when we attacked and you could see Hyppia and Co panicking. He proved to be really effective to bring on as sub.

According to wicked pea dear -

Laurent D’Jaffo is now an agent & assists Sheffield United with scouting.

Perhaps that’s done on the isle of fernandos.
