This is probably the first thread I have ever started in the main section, mainly due to my thoughts that despite been a season ticket holder this year and last others are better placed having watched on a regular basis for a lot longer. After yesterday I feel I can vice at least my opinion if nothing else to get off my chest!

For the first match of last season Nigel Clough picked a what a lot of us felt was a strange team as though he was using the match to make a point to some players i.e. Collins, Doyle. I felt yesterday Nigel Adkins picked a team to try and show he is better than Clough, "look at me, look what I can do with players that Clough couldn't do" In summary "I am Billy Big Bollocks"

Let me give you examples of I what I mean

Long - "Cloughie sent him out on loan didn't think he was good enough I'll show everyone I can make him a keeper" Huge error, I watched George before the game started and he looked terrified, real rabbits in the headlight stuff

McFazydan- "as above Cloughie didn't rate him I can show everyone that I can make him a player" He is simply not good enough for this level and even more so at left or wing back. Looked totally out of his depth

The Central Defender issue - There is not much that everyone agrees on this forum but the fact we need central defenders from last November, certainly from January has been more than obvious. To me Adkins again has thought " I can train these players to be League 1 defenders especially Collins who Clough fell out with, we don't need new players" By the way is that 9 goals we have conceded in Collins last two matches? 4 yesterday and 5 in the 5-2 defeat at Swindon last year

Murphy- again we all agree that Murphy was a success under Clough playing on the wing and cutting in. So what does Adkins do yesterday (1st half) plays him just behind the front two. Again is this a case of him arrogantly thinking he can make him a different player?

Adams - Again thinking he can make something more of the lad. Clough used him as an impact player and they were his best performances but Adkins wanted to prove he could make him a player from the start. The lad never got into the game, never had a good run at defenders

I don't want anyone to think I am praising Clough as he made many many mistakes but new Nigel looked clueless on yesterdays match. Other points like putting tiny Scougal and Reed on into a midfield where we were already being out muscled and over run

There will be lots of comments of its only one game etc but we looked so far short of being a team that we could need 5 players. We need 2 or even 3 central defenders, a left back, a goakeeper and still we need a midfield presence. The jury is still out on the strikers because they were feeding off scraps but isn't that what we said last year?

Onwards to the Chesterfield game but at this stage I am far more pissed off than I was at the end of the Bristol City game this time last year as it was clear they would be near the top come the end of the season Good luck to Gillingham they played some solid football at times yesterday but are they likely to be runaway leaders?

Heaven forbid that he brings on central midfielders when losing the midfield battle and we have one central midfielder on the park. Sure Wallace might have been better, but you can't really criticise Adkins for those subs

I wasn't saying not change it but bring on some height as we were losing the ariel battles in midfield If Wallace isn't fit enough to come on why is he on the bench

Adkins used the adage in a interview some time ago , that certain players dont do well under one manager but do under another . From what he has seen in pre season , he may well have believed this ( and we all hoped he had the midas touch ) . It is a fact that this sometimes works ( when a team goes on a winning run after sacking a manager ) . Unfortunatley this appears to have somewhat backfired . We have to hope , that the Adkins experiment / all have a clean sheet , start a fresh etc is over . The players are perhaps not good enough or intellegant enough to listen , or a bit of both.

Do we look , or are we any way forward , from last season . I know its only after one match , but the answer has to be- no.

We have to rely on Adkins , and the boards financial backing to bring in a further set of players , to get this right . We have also got to remember that we will have taken a big financial hit , in getting rid of Clough and his entourage . Lets hope we have not already set our own benchmark and this becomes a season of transition .

Could not disagree with the thread title more: Adkins is about as far from arrogant as it's possible to be without retreating into some kind of Buddhist monastery.

He has, and we have, seen the players in a competitive game and hopefully things will improve - maybe we'll only lose 3-0 to Chesterfield.

I'm going to blithely ignore the facts and choose to believe the conspiracy theorists who claim he set them up for fall as he wasn't getting backing from the Board.

Looking at the line-up, it's hard to argue against it.

GK - A confidence player who cannot command his box or deal with crosses against a team who are great at set-pieces and lob balls into the box?
LB - who wasn't good enough to play in his natural position for the club last season
CBs - who are poor in the air and are not commanding against a team who are good at set-pieces.
Baxter - protecting the defence against a determined and tough-tackling midfield :D:D:D
Adams, a raw talent against hard tackling defenders who don't let up.

Unless Adams has been broken by the Reading experience, he's suddenly become a dreadful manager who can;t judge players or the opposition. This seems very unlikely. I'm going to cheer myself up by making myself believe that his actions yesterday, lack of recruitment and with naming J-Mac as captain are all part of a cunning plan.

now thats a conspiracy :)

That OP is a load of drivel. I'm sure Adkins doesn't give a flying fuck what Clough did before him.

It worries me that every time last season is raised in an interview Adkins refuses to talk about it and says he only cares about the future. I could understand this is we got relegated last season but we were in the play-offs. It worries me that he's not looked at what happened previously and just given everyone a 100% fresh start and judged by friendlies/training. It is an odd thing to do if it is the case.

The fans certainly aren't going to forget last season and neither will opposition managers.

This was the unintentional comedy moment of the day. We're Losing every challenge and we're 2 goals down, so we bring on our 2 least physical players, who are both goal and assist black holes to boot.

Could be an element of that Bladesadviser. I was one of those calling for the return of Collins towards the back end of last season purely on the basis that he was a recognised CB, however I fully expected him to be on his bike at the seasons end, not starting the first game with the other accident waiting to happen as a central pairing. I was hoping McFazdean would start, but not that McFazdean, but as well all know that transfer rumour never materialised.

Totally agree with this. I could kind of see why a Weir new to the game would not come in and shake it all up but it was painstakingly obvious we were miles off last season despite making the playoffs and needed to jettison half a dozen to a dozen players and bring in 6 or 7 first teamers. It is surprising Adkins wanted this fresh slate. These are players that have failed time after time. Unsure why he needed to wait this long to realise how crap many of them are. The pre season which went well in results/performances may have been as bigger a disaster as last year in the sense that it seems to have fooled Adkins into a misguided sense that actually Collins, Long, McEveley and McFadzean aren't bad. The reality has hit him firmly in the jaw yesterday against a set of no marks (with all due respect to Gillingham) how bad these players are.

Heard Edinburgh say they had pinpointed set plays and crosses. No shit. Every other manager will have seen how bad we were at this last season in this area. The team talk is easy. Balls into the box again and again; high balls mainly and get men around the keeper and watch them implode.

All ways gets me that "Confidence player" comment, because even if the manager is confident in him it doesn't mean the supporters are and their the ones who pay his and the managers wages..

I love this forum always the different views! I just saw what I saw, no clue in defence, no pace, no urgency, players seemingly played out of position and I still say a manger trying to make some point just as Cloughie did a year ago

On the subject of LB is Harris injured?

Keepers who are confidence players are utterly pointless. A Keeper should be in the Schmeichel mode. Loud, part crazy and will knock everyone out of the way to get to a ball. You need to be confident, verging on arrogant, to play in goal. It's what holds Hart back.

Joe Hart's a bit of a psycho too, actually. Can't see George Long doing this:

A great first thread. An honest assessment of the game and key issues surrounding it.

Let's hope NA can buck his ideas up and sign at least 2 CBs GK and fast.

If you were asked to run 100 mtres in a set time, and give it your all, there is no way encouragement wrapped up in a different parcel would legally make you run faster.
So it is with footballers. They peak and that is it, Adkins, despite his enthusiasm cannot make a silk purse out of a pigs ear, pardon the reference to our friends in South Barnsley.
It must be obvious to all connected to the club, that, at the moment, we are no more capable than a Division 1 side. Congrats to the Gills for emphasising this ,so early in the season. We must act NOW

We need 1 if not 2 CH's before next Saturday, put Howard in goal until we find another good keeper.

Perfhaps we should look at Worksop, so many years ago, when a butchers boy. all of five feet nine inches tall set out on the path to legendary status. My point being that there so many keepers' locally who are better than what we have.

I wonder whether scouts, professional ,or otherwise can spot a gem?

I imagine that until Adkins arrived at SUFC, he had never heard of McFadzean along with many other fringe players. He has given them all a chance and McFadzean played well pre-season. He was awful on Saturday

And there, ladies and gentlemen is the real cause of our problems. We all thought we'd got a decent manager but it's actually pub league Adams who has come back ;).

In all seriousness though Robbie, you make a decent argument for a conspiracy theory that I'd actually considered.
