Is this the Mr Arnold that appears to be a bitter that he wasn't offered the job? Funny how we tried to go down the football route with Wilson and now we aren't interested in it.

It's strange that some believe it is always our board that is at fault in these situations.....couldn't Arnold be lying to protect his own position?

Not sure his comments will protect his position.

Since they are our sister club apparently? What a great partnership we must have with these clubs we can barely get any players off them nevermind the damn manager.

Warnock would not change the culture or modernise the club in any way. Why default to Warnock? [It's a rhetorical question - I'm well aware of the tired old answer].

Many of you are fencing around this. The uncomfortable truth is front and centre at last. Arnold didn't tell the Clappers a few home truths at all. He told the Hoofwaffe and Dinosaur Dave a few home truths. I've been trying for years. Long ball is outdated, ineffective, mind-numbing crap. it's an embarrassment to watch and a philosophy of despair - "we're crap so we shouldn't even try to play the game properly".

Well done Graham Arnold. We are in your debt.

Perhaps they'll listen now?...........

Bassett - Kick him out high; Kick him out long; Kick him out hard.

What an amazing lie to tell about Dinosaur Dave - a lie that exactly reflects his prehistoric football philosophy. It's quite astonishing that Arnold stumbled, by pure chance on a perfectly accurate analysis of Bassett's 'philosophy' in his web of deceit, isn't it?

Well no, actually. Every word is true. Every word should have the club hanging its head in shame.

Stop hiding from the truth. It's a disgrace that an anachronistic 'kick and rush' merchant is advising on the appointment that is supposedly founded on a 'new model' - I expect Bassett will deliver a Ford Anglia. His involvement marks this process as shamefully amateurish, self-destructive nonsense. They could not have picked anyone less appropriate if they tried.

Bassett Out! You are an embarrassment.

I live in NZ and have access to all of the A league games. I pride myself on being able to watch any football, but I very rarely watch more than 20 mins of any game as the A league is very very poor and so frustrating. Yes the CCM won it but if we were in it we would walk it (even with the shit we have now). The standard in Oz is poor in the extreme. Arnolds team play ok football but there is no way I would ever pay to watch any A league team. They rave on about the fact that Del Piero is playing and Heskey and how good their league is because of this. I have yet to see Del Piero break sweat and Heskey is revered here like a god, he has not got any better though, just older slower and not really as good as he was.

The vitriol aimed at the club based on this clowns comments are laughable, yes give the club shit for not getting proven managers but Graham Arnold????? Come on. If he thinks that the A league is better than any league football in England he is is kidding himself. I would bet we had a chat did not follow up and he is trying to save face.

The club isn't a joke, but the way McCabe and his Board have managed the club is.

I know what you're saying but it's really dancing on the head of a pin.

I never thought I'd see the club in a bigger mess than when we played in front of a ploughed field on John Street, and Brealey spoke lies while the staff went unpaid. But here we are.

NZ Blade is quite right, Arnold has lead a very average side to a win in a poor league. A poor over hyped league full of 10th rate Brazilians & never have been Europeans all looking class because the local fare in aussie is shiter than a dingo`s arse on the barbie.

Central coast are currently getting whipped by obscure asian sides in their version of the champions league. trust me we don`t want a manager from this tepid little australian league, CCM are mind numbingly boring, monty is absolute minge & so is his tosspot of a manager. He`s got a big gob though.

Ah, getting rid of Danny was a masterstroke, look at how rosy the future is now without the pig !

No, employing Wilson was a dire mistake. In any other industry, his record wouldn't have got him an auto-reply e-mail when he put in his ludicrous application. But this is football and possibly why Arnold is being so bitter - that he can't land a job in the lower echelons where any old journeyman pro (or someone who's 'Done mi badges') has a fair chance of employment.

Nobody knows the ins-and-outs of what has happened with Arnold but, as ever, it's polarised into the usual 'hoof v play it out neatly from the back' argument. Neither is a solution, it's a combination of the ability to utilise several styles dependent on situations, opposition etc. with fit, high-tempo (young?) players with the desire to get into the oppositions' faces. Such as Yeovil, Donnie, Brentford etc.

Here in lies a lot of the problem with the English game, we still view Eastern Europe and ASIAN teams as inferior and obscure when the truth is their players are far better technically than a lot of English ones. Maybe United should head off on a pre-season tour over there as it might be far more challenging than what they get. The mariners just got beat by the obscure Guangzhou Evergrande who are coach by Marcello Lippi and have a wage bill that includes $12m a season on there top player. The result was no worse than united going down 4 - 0 to Reading and would probably a similar comparison to where the clubs are relatively.

Having watched both the Mariners and Blades last season I know which one I enjoy watching more in terms of football. Second time I went to watch the Blades when over my 8 year old daughter asked "are they just going to boot it and head it again today dad?" even she had noticed the complete contrast in the style of play as although the Mariners may not have the best players they at least play football.

Not sure of Arnolds motivation for the article but he did turn down more money in the past to stay with the Mariners and not go to Sydney as they pushed back on him bringing his own coaching team so he certainly looks at things from the perspective of whether or not he thinks he can be successful rather than the $.

As a regular watcher of Asian football, I disagree with this. The vast majority of teams in the Asian Champions League are barely Championship standard.

Arnold is like David Carney - he's right about United's limitations, but not as good as he thinks he is. If Nick Montgomery is good enough to play in a Champions League, that's a bad Champion's League.

From The Star http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/sheffield-united/500k-arnold-slams-united-1-5726257

Graham Arnold’s extravagant wage demands prompted managerless Sheffield United to end their dialogue with the Central Coach Mariners coach.

Sources in Australia told The Star last night that Arnold, who yesterday labelled United “prehistoric” during an outspoken and potentially ill-judged attack, wanted around £500,000 per year plus bonuses to take charge at Bramall Lane.
The 49-year-old is also believed to have requested an automatic pay rise if they gained promotion under his stewardship.
United, who hope to appoint Danny Wilson successor before the Football League’s summer conference begins in Portugal later this week, unveiled plans to become a sustainable business after being condemned to another season in English football’s third tier last month.
Arnold’s words could place the relationship between United and Mariners, which recently culminated in Nick Montgomery being transfered to Bluetongue Stadium, under severe strain.
Other candidates hoping to replace Wilson at the helm, which include Port Vale coach Robert Page and Chris Morgan, are scheduled to hold further talks with United’s hierarchy over the course of the next 72 hours.
This newspaper understands that, despite being impressed by Arnold’s credentials, at no stage did United formally invite him to replace Wilson at the helm.
Meanwhile, former United and Scotland international midfielder Barry Robson is poised to join Aberdeen.

If it weren't for the fact that we've been turned down by other managers and that we constantly talk out of the back of our heads, then i'd be inclined to lend us the benefit of the doubt.

As it is, we're ill-managed, always engaging in political double speak and have burnt bridges with many of the more optimistic blades who previously defended such behaviour.

Hiya cobbers , Im the leading coach in Australia , so it as plain as a didgeridoo that what I say comes from a wealth of football knowledge from the worlds leading nation in football. I am the aborigine special one, and will one day be begged by manchester city to lead them to 3 or 4 premier league titles. You can buy my video , how to play proper football, sponsored by Fosters on line , gudday

It's refreshing to hear, really.

I've spent a bit of time in Australia and they are decent, upfront and direct people. None of this "It was a good offer from a brilliant club, but I had to think of the cat". He's spoken what he feels is the truth for him, it's better we hear it that way than trying to pretend anything else. We have problems, we all know it. It's better to address them than to pretend all is well.

Whether he was offered the job or not is irrelevant, My worry now is that we're fast running out of first/second/third choice candidates and we have a board of directors that have constraints that are putting people off.

Struggling to see why anyone is getting out their pram here. How many times have we all called it a pub league? We are a shit team in a shit league. We live in the footballing third world in england where oace and power overrides technique and skill. Dark days ahead for us locally and nationally I'm afraid.

.

It would have been more credible if he had mentioned he wanted £500k per year plus bonuses for the job which was obviously unreasonable. He just sounds like he thought we would take him on and is now looking for excuses for us not offering him the job. For once the Board have done the right thing and have kept silent about all candidates and actually showed respect to all that have shown an interest.

By Arnold's response,I think we have had a lucky escape.

We cannot judge whether Arnold has told the truth until we have heard both sides.

United, who hope to appoint Danny Wilson successor before the Football League’s summer conference begins in Portugal later this week,

I sincerely hope this is another Star typo!

Anyway, I'd have thought £500k p.a. + bonus for promotion a reasonable demand from somebody who can do the job. Not sure if that man is Arnold, but what are we going to get as manager for less than £10k a week?

Am I mistaken here or doesn't the manager choose the style of play or am I completely behind the times. And doesn't his aquisation of monty sort of make him look a twat ?

Very true. Another point in that though at the moment many want to make SUFC responsible for world hunger, we cannot dictate the prevelant style of play in England's third division. We must do what's necessary to escape it, not mould our style to tickle the fancy of some no mark from a footballing backwater.

UTB

Depends if he acquired him, or was dumped with him doesn't it?
he played him in every game , and he looked like gazza did at rangers

oz football is in truth still on a par with the Evostick league

heres what is essentially a barman in waiting doing a passing impression of jose mourinho
but with more arrogance

Considering Warnock wasn't even on 500k when we were in the premier league then yes, i do think that 500k for a third division manager is a bit too much.

The average salary of a League One player is £80,000, average Championship players, £211k - just to put Arnold's demands into context. I conclude from this that any or all of the following apply here:

a) He's barking mad
b) He has a worrying delusion of grandeur
c) He knows absolutely nothing of the situation he's been interviewed for.

Whichever it is, I don't want him managing SUFC.

I think its way over the top, its about 9K/week to manage players on 2/2.5K/week.
4K/week is generous to manage in D3.

9K is OK if and when they get us to the championship.

looking at the reply's Arnold has at least united the fans in thinking he's a greedy twat.

Where has the £500k come from?

If we have that budget then we'd have no problem attracting a manager. For the ratio between manager wages to entire playing squad wages would be about 1:4, which seems entirely unrealistic.
