I'm still waiting for the Leeds friendly.

i reckon we will see them at the lane this season? Can't see it being friendly though.

At £34 Robert, you can bet your sweet one it won't...

Estudiantes (Striped Shirts/Black Panties)
Chris Sievey aka Frank Sidebottom...RIP
May don a papier mache head for this one.... easy to say when drunk.

And Sabella, and Veron, no pleasing some people!

That said, I don't get it with Sabella. From what I can gather, he played shit and we were relegated.

we played Benfica one year and got beat 3-1 I think ,about 97/98 ?

I remember that, we were doing well until a long haired bloke came off the bench and tore us a new one.

Would rather it be Boca Juniors

You do realise that these days both Boca and River Plate are mediocre at best. They're like Sunderland and Wigan.

It'd have been funny to play Newell's Old Boys as their badge says NOB on it. :D

Funny how quickly one forgets these things. I've looked it up and it was 4th August 1998 (a Tuesday). I was working in London at the time so missed it.

We also played Udinese on 24 August 1994 and lost 1 - 2 . Littlejohn got our goal.

Does anyone remember us having a friendly against a national side, probably around 2000?
I think they were from somewhere in Eastern Europe, but then again I might have just dreamed it up completely, I would only have been young at the time.
If I'm right I think it was a night match in December and we lost 2-0.
Anyone any ideas...?

Benfica was my lads first game ,he woke up when we the crowd cheered our consolation goal.
We also played the mighty Kiev Dynamo in the 70s with Oleg Blockhin didn't we ? 2-1 defeat I think.

I remember it, couldn't tell you the national team we played, though.

Estonia, when Gary Johnson was their manager.

That was a 'competitive' match in the Anglo-Italian Cup. It was made infamous due to some antics on the half way line. It was the first season that the Lane had reverted to three sides after John Street had been demolished, and the dug outs were also put on that side of the pitch, or in "Fred West's Garden", as St David of Bassett used to call it.

One of the Udinese players went down like a dying swan from a challenge by Hodgy (I think), and this led to a red card for him. I can't remember if it was a second yellow or not. The ever calm Charlie Hartfield then came across to communicate in his usual fistful way. (Might have got Hodgy and Charlie the wrong way round there, actually)

Another Italian fell over, and Charlie got a red card. Then a Udinese player got sent off, presumably for retaliation. Meanwhile, there was still a Udinese player on the floor, writhing as much as a box of badgers. Nathan Blake had an idea which could stop this, and sent a Mitre Delta flying into his face. It clearly hadn't deflated, as it rebounded straight back to Nat, who, showing remarkable goalkeeping thought, caught it cleanly and then recycled it straight in to the now honestly in pain Italian's guts. Blake also had to walk.

All through this though, St David of Bassett was quite clearly indicating that the referee may enjoy his own company. Well, all I'll say is that if St David knew something that we all didn't, and the length of his gesticulation were true, I'm sure a few ladies would have enjoyed his company as well. St David also made the long, slow (very slow) walk across the pitch to the South Stand.

Leeds TV gleefully showed all this the following day, and then United banned them for a few weeks from the Lane as a result!

The rest of the match as you'd expect was generally terrible, save for their winner, which was a rather good overhead kick, which almost verbatim from Tony Pritchett,

".... sent the away fans (in the upper tier of the away end) into raptures. All six of them."

They were also apparently from chesterfield.

I remember that quite well, and I was only six!

I believe Gary kept calling them U-din-ees. And we were denied a cast iron penalty when we were given a freekick on the right hand side of the box when the fould had been committed at least a yard inside.

I remember that one well... It was the only time that i've ever sat on the Bramall lane lower tier, although not quite sure we it was open to home fans

Latvia on 28th March 2000 19:45 ko... just dug out the ticket stub.

Marian Pahars played for them.

What did you have for tea..?

What did you have for tea..?

I don't keep records of such things. My wife probably did though since she trained in catering many years ago and makes notes of everything. One thing is for certain - it would have been a good, healthy meal, prepared with care by Mrs.BB. None on your takeways or junk food in our house!

(I probably got let off washing up duty that evening, too, since I was going to the match).

I was at the Latvia match, and I've got the ticket stub somewhere too. Pahars was at Southampton at the time if I recall. Gary Johnson (ex Bristol City, now Peterborough manager) was in charge of Latvia.

National anthem(s?) before the match, like a proper international. I think it might've been £1 to get in.

Did Nathan Peel play for us?

I remember us playing New Zealand and I think we won 4-2.
2 stunning second half goals from NZ and a goal from Mike Lake from a ridiculous angle.

can't remember when it was though

I *think* we lost 1-0, but for some reason I couldn't go.

We did, Pahars scored near the end if I remember rightly.

I got a free ticket for that game. United came to our junior school and handed out loads of freebies.

Have tickets gone on sale for this? There doesn't seem to be anything about tickets on the official site.
