Perhaps the first two loses made CW have a good think - just like L1

Have we dropped lucky playing a pretty negative midfield in those games

Have Wigan done us a massive favour taking Evans

Has the signing of "pass master" Norwood given the whole team it's mojo back

Has Stevens suddenly discovered his last season, early season form because of the pass master

Has Fleck been allowed freedom to go forward again because of the pass master sitting behind being the quarter back

Have our wing backs decided that this division isn't all it's cracked up to be and they can compete on even terms

Have Sharpe and Clarke become an impressive front pairing because the midfield is suddenly clicking.

Has Egan galvanised the back three

Has Bash stepped up yet again to become Mr Consistent again at RWB and midfield when required to stiffen it up

and then there's Coutts and the as of yet anonymous striker to come in

Does it feel like L1 all over again?................bring on the Villa, one game at a time and no poxy league cup to think about.

Yes

No. League 1 wasn't inhabited by a cheating whining cunt called Grealish. Glad am not there next week. Saves me an arrest and potential stadium ban.

I think we have to balance the onset of any euphoric feelings with the knowledge that QPR and Bolton are poor teams and Norwich are “middlin”. However, the quality of the passing in particular has stepped up to a new level over this last three games and we look like we are getting into the groove.

The signing of Norwood and the restoration of Duffy have been key to this improvement. But others have stepped up as well.

Let’s see how we go v Villa. That game should tell us a lot about whether we are going to be amongst the best and destined for a top 6 challenge.

Having tipped us for a lower finish than last season I’m beginning to doubt that now based on recent performances. They were excellent yesterday. Another performance like that v Villa and I’ll be fancying a top 6 finish tbh!

Before we lost Coutts we were flying. Without him we were less than average. Gradually the doom merchants lost faith and hope, and at the same time Billy became a year older and could no longer cut it at this level. Clarke also got slower, older and no longer motivated. We brought in another ageing injury-prone striker who didn't have any pace either. Wilder got found out at this level too. He needed to ditch Stevens; he needed to ditch Basham etc........

The transfer window was another wasted opportunity. Our owners again failed to open their wallets to help bail out our manager.

THEN.................. Paul Coutts V2.0 in the shape of Oliver Norwood replaces Lee Evans, and all the observations by these intelligent soccer analysts is back put into perspective. Probable conclusion............they were talking Bollocks after all.

Its Sharp.

No 'e' required.

Unless of course you're referring to the popular TV Series of 90's featuring Sean Bean.

Billy Sharp has no 'e' though.

I’m with you Fulwood Blade.

I was fearing the worst after the first set of games.

Norwood a great signing.

I am happy so far with our points total, but QPR, Norwich and Notlob are teams I would think are mid table stuff at best.
Let's see how it goes, the signs are good that we are improving.

I don't think it's any fluke that things have picked up, since the midfield improved, they're crucial to what we do.

If the midfield can't be trusted or aren't clicking:
  1. Fleck has to work more defensively and do 2 men'm jobs.
  2. The wingbacks daren't push on through fear of us losing possession
  3. We're more likely to easily give the ball away.
  4. No one's creating chances, leaving the strikers looking isolated. At which point they get called old and past it.
Suddenly, the midfield has balance again and the "L1 days" are being referred to again. We have a midfield architect, defensive bit, a box to box player and a wizard in Duff.

Loveleh.

It may be bollocks or it may be that we are finally shaking off the effects of the triumvirate of head shots that Coutts’ injury, Freeman’s injury and the Fulham game hit us with.

For whatever reason, whether it was because we couldn’t afford to or because we decided not to, we didn’t properly replace Coutts. Other teams faced with the same situation, would’ve brought in a like for like replacement, there & then. We lost our ‘regista’ and subsequently suffered for it. The midfielder players that were brought in pre and post injury simply weren’t good enough and have had the effect of limiting us. They came from L1, and that is where they’ll end up playing. No shame in that, but it’s not what we want. We’ve had to get rid and bring in a player of proven upper end championship quality to get things back on track. There’s been plenty of times in our history where we’ve taken the cheap option, and it rarely works and yet we still do it.

As the footballing gods would see fit, the next game after Coutts’ injury gave us the collywobbles, from which we never 100% recovered last season. 6 points out of the next 24 available tells its own story, it also introduced the last minute winner/long distance goal against us. Individually and collectively we seemed to lose our belief/nerve. The last minute winner against Norwich appears to flicked a switch in us, coupled with arrival of Norwood, the return of Freeman, we seem to be believe in ourselves & each other again.

Sharp, having scored two against Burton in mid November, then didn’t score another league goal until he got two against Leeds in mid February. They’re needed to be no agenda for people to think that his time as an effective championship striker was coming to an end. It was an honest assessment of what they were seeing, especially when Wilson arrived on loan and Sharp only scoring three more league goals after Leeds. This season he is visibly thinner and more mobile. Last season’s criticism appears to have stung him into action. Clarke on the other hand looks to be out of sorts and struggling. Whether the struggle is temporary or whether it’s permanent, only time will tell. He has only scored 6 goals in his last 28 league games, which although not great, is probably slightly higher his natural ratio, but not at a level that we require. It’s worth remembering that he scored 9 league goals in November and 10 in the rest of the last season. It’s never a good sign when discussion about a striker involves comments like “it’s not just about goals, it’s about work rate and what he brings to the side”. I’m of the view that if a striker scores goals, he usually brings either a point or three to the side, which is his raison d’être and the rest, although important, is secondary.

I'm getting that 'can't wait for the next match' feeling. Does that count?

I'm quietly smiling about the fact that it's Villa, and that we owe them one. And I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it. Especially if it's by way of a 90th minute screamer by Oliver 'Thine is the kingdom, the power & the glory' Norwood. :)

Billy Sharp has no 'e' though.

Neither did Brooks but that was ever so difficult for some folks. Then we had some on here the other week referring to our greatest ever player as “Curry”!

But then we have our own club producing merchandise and being unable to spell its own name!

None of this matters to the new, spell-check, illiterate generation.

Ok FB this is a board read by mostly working class blokes who have a certain way of describing things in plain Sheffield language. Some of us might have heard of a quarterback from that daft American game but round these parts they are called aif backs or inside forrads or even for the young un's midfielders, so save that kind of talk for when you go on your hols to the States. Have a nice day sir.

yes, the villa game should be a watershed moment and a good test, against a good opponent. Wouldn't quite call it euphoric feelings, just genuine sings that we have for now replaced Coutts with someone else that gives the team it's balance back and allows other players to perform at a higher level of belief.

The early signs are now promising - I can see us being a side that 9at least) tries to pass through the thirds, which as I understand it, is how CW & AK ideally want to play.
