Are we cursed by perpetually having useless boards and crap chairman?

What have we done wrong?

Brealey, Woolhouse, Hinchcliffe, McDonald, the Italian sounding lawyer, McCabe and now this plonker . All in my lifetime

Can't we just have someone half decent, for once in my life please. They don't have to be a billionaire, just have no crazy ideas of world domination or 'structures' and just run the club and stay out of the way

I think you are wrong to blame the Board and the owner for it all and your preferred way forward does not tally with a professional football club in this century. You are Betamax as against streaming !

Gi over. This guy just wants to play real life fantasy football from his fancy home in California. That's what this 'structure' is all about.

It'll all end in tears.

My prediction 5 years from now is that we'll be flirting with Championship relegation and he'll be trying to sell. The club will be rudderless and the fans either depressed or irate.

Seen it all before.

No we aren't. Very unlucky at times? Certainly.

But really, we are just one of many big clubs, who consistently fail to get our shit together for prolonged periods.

By our standards, we have just had a golden age. It could always be better, but not many clubs have 2 promotions in 3 years, and then flirt with a European place. None of us wanted the ride to end like this, but I wouldn't swap any of those 4 seasons.

In comparison to the rest, the Prince has been an excellent owner.

We’ve not sold our best players in years and even when we did Wilder was given the funds to spend (Brooks, Adams) and he’s backed Wilder to the tune of £130m in the Premier League. He’s not perfect but I’m not sure what more we can ask from an owner.

Cursed maybe, we certainly have a long history of whenever we get a good team together we find a way to take a wrecking ball to it either by player sales or managerial changes.
Not surprised at all by the current situation down at the lane it has happened multiple times in my 60 odd years as a supporter. You know what they say those who don't learn by their mistakes are bound to repeat them, that really should be the club motto.

The Prince is the luckiest chairman in Sheffield United history. He got handed a Premier League club for a comparatively small sum thanks to a legal technicality .

I've not seen anything yet to make me impressed with him. Quite a bit that worries me though

I think there's a reasonable question as to why we've seemingly never attracted a truly wealthy investor in football terms.

Many smaller clubs have managed it in hardly attractive locations.

McCabe supposed set the club up to protect it (although some will say to protect himself) but whether that put some off i don't know.

We just never seemed to have been on the radar of anyone significant.

I hoped in getting to the Prem with the Prince we might attract at least some more investment.

Instead, despite Championship clubs suffering badly due to Covid, the noises are suggesting that after two seasons in the PL and with parachute payments, we might not be particularly competitive financially next season.

Some don't like fans going on about the past but it's frightening how the same mistakes or circumstances just keep coming round.

He didn’t have to back Wilder in the transfer market, I don’t think anyone expected us to spend the amount of money on fees which we have since promoted.

I’m not saying he is perfect, but credit where credit is due.

I don't think the Prince had been dipping into his own bank account very much for Wilders sake, the Transfer fees are all tied to TV money and Premier league income.

We aren't competing on wages with anyone. We're bottom of the pile for prospective players in the Prem, so if no one else wants them we sign them. We couldn't even compete with Fulham for Robinson.

We spent 20 mill on Brewster put that's peanuts when even lower mid table teams like Newcastle spaff money around for the likes of Joelinton.

A classic "SPEND MUNNEH" style thread. Nevermind that we've shelled out a fortune on players over the past couple of seasons. And also broke our transfer record in the season before.

Oh give over. Tell me how much our direct competitors spent on players this season? From memory, we were very mid table in terms of fees paid, and that didn't include the fact that Berge's fee came out of the this season's pot.

Yeah of course we are, once we showed Yorkshire CCC the exit door, that was it. I thought everyone knew that ;)

Players will go to the club that pays them the most. They won't sign for us even if we pay a higher transfer fee.

Usually, if you look at any league table, you'll see that roughly the teams at the bottom are those with the lowest wage budgets.

Transfer fees are just the going rate at that time. Yes I don't like the Brewster signing, but the board basically enforce a policy of trying to sign young up and coming talent over more seasoned talent on higher wages. If they take that appraoch they can't then get upset when the gamble fails.

We literally picked up players that were heavily rumoured to be interesting numerous other clubs. Berge was (and still is) extremely hot property. Rammers had various clubs after him. Brewster had Palace and Brighton hovering. We don't know the ins and outs of the deals. The fact is that we still invested more than many other clubs in this division, both in fees; and by the very fact that we took on new players, on wages too.

You say in the OP that you want a chairman who doesn't invest loads of his own money, but just runs us well and keeps out of the way. That's literally what we have. We've not fucked over our future by paying inflated wages and we STILL don't know the ins and outs of what's happened with Wilder.

Basically, yes. It was very much a case of from the frying pan to the fire when the Prince won the court case. The agreed strategy was to sign young players with resale value with low wages and big relegation cuts to cushion the fallout from relegation; and, in turn, leave us in a position to launch an immediate return with these players developed and reaching their peak. The Prince has reneged on the plan now that the anticipated relegation has happened - albeit a year later. My view is he has very little money (not enough to fund an upwardly mobile Championship club) and he's shit himself because Sheffield's answer to Paul Daniel's has run out of magic tricks; with the prospect of the parachute payments being vastly reduced if we aren't promoted in the next two years. Basically it's an pecuniary problem.

It's an ongoing myth that Wilder signs the players. He has one vote on the transfer committee; players are recommended, voted on and then the club attempts to acquire the winner of the votes. Any member of said committee can recommend a player. Everyone's vote is equal.

Streaming or steaming? As in ‘steaming pile of shit’. That’s what this decision is.

There are a lot of football fans out there who wonder how a team who has been in the topflight fairly often can claim to be cursed. Sheffield as a football city has underperformed, but that's nothing compared to Bristol.

There sod all money in the city. Simple as. It's not an attractive city for investors, managers or players.

I know the Prince didn’t spend his own money on transfers, but he still could’ve said no. He could’ve chosen to spend a similar amount as Norwich did last season.

Invested in potential not seasoned premiership quality hence we are where we are

We got the players that Wilder wanted. I want him to stay desperately, but there is absolutely no way he should get a free ride in this. He is as culpable as HRH, if not more.

My pal (🐷) and I share a belief that Sheffield football in general is cursed. Whenever one club gets too far ahead of the other, they must self implode in a spectacular way.

It's like we are synchronised to out-shit each other for eternity.
Here's your answer mate.
