Debuts for Paul Williams, Simon Webster and Cliff Powell and Wally Downes is sent off.

Any idea where the goals and sending off are?

Not seen this before. Will watch it later. Wally Downes and Mark Aizlewood got sent off. Wally was still furious when he got into the changing room so he picked up a tea urn, went over to L**ds changing room and threw the urn at Aizlewood!

Think we lost 4-0 at Smelland Rd in 1990 when we both went up to Div 1 - also 5-0 to West Ham and only missed out on the title on goal difference

No, we missed out on points. I remember the 5-0 at Upton Park (my first away match) and I remember them doing us 2-0 at the Lane the same season. We had summat like 28 corners. Against L**ds that year we got pumped 4-0 and I think we drew 2-2 at the Lane, Strachan acting like a twat in front of the away end after running the length of the pitch and scoring.

It was GD

Strachan's goal was the following season when we lost 2-0. Sterland (from about 35 yards out) and Carl Shutt scored in the 2-2 draw on 26/12/89.

Watch between 22.30 and 25.30 for Downes elbow on Aizlewood which earned him a booking. Downes then got sent off for a small tussle not long after. Dont think Aizlewood got sent off, maybe he got subbed which led to Downes throwing a tea urn at him. Not seen the goals yet

Painful to watch...

I went to that one unfortunately.

John Piggy Pearson scored a hat trick , and was apparently drinking in The Ball in Ecclesfield at 6pm that evening complete with match ball.

I also went to Leeds a couple of years after when we lost 4-0, interrupting a holiday in Barcelona to get back in time for the early kick off. It was memorable for a bit of a rammy ( Scottish for feytin) in the stand away to our right, and some Neanderthal pointing at me for 90 minutes doing slit your throat actions. Should have stayed on las Ramblas .

Around the same era I also went to Boro - lost 6-0- and Upton Park - lost 5-0- on both occasions sitting in the home end with home supporting mates.

We had some good times under Bassett, but we stunk the place out every now and then.... Paul Williams ....shudder....

Character building , our day will come....

The Leeds 4 v 0 Blades game was April 18, 1990 and featured briefly in the 'United' documentary. Quite the most remarkable game I've ever attended. We only got around 1300 tickets and I hoped they would be mostly fighters - we'd certainly need them! But no. Mostly dads & sons. It was going to be a long afternoon...

I drove up on mi tod to 'blend in'. I saw the small knot of Blades arrive with a police helicopter hovering overhead - the first time I'd seen that at a match. Into the ground and we were in a small, uncovered corner. The crowd was in a frenzy I'd never experienced at an English ground. A huge white, yellow and blue flag was being passed over the heads of the crowd (again, I'd never seen that), 'The Only Way is Up' was blasting out. It started to drizzle and those loveable Leeds scamps took to throwing sugar at us. The 'feytin' Paisley Blade refers to was in the Lowfield Road stand where, I believe, John Gannons girlfriend was glassed.

The 4-0 result was of minor importance. Just to get back on the M1 intact was all that mattered... It did seem the end of our promotion dream but, a couple of weeks later, that fabulous sunny day at Leicester saw us go up!

Yes, I am always interested in historical blades games but I am loath to look at that as I remembered John Pearson got a hattrick.

I think the 4-1 win over Ipswich was sandwiched in between this game and the hiding at Boro. Bassett played Brian Smith in midfield that day. It is fair to say it did not go well.

Fun fact: despite it being mid March, at that point in the season United's starting XI against Leeds had scored a grand total of 3 league goals for us that season: 2 by Agana and one by Beagrie.

For some unfathomable reason the coppers kept us penned in after the game and the pitch invading Leeds twats threw coins at us for a while. At least made a couple of quid in 50p's.
It was horrible and the first goal was as blatant an offside as you will see with Strachan (I think) stood behind the keeper and tapping home after it was cleared off the line. Gutted.
Also memorable for Fucking Bobby Davison intimidating Tracey all game. Wonder if he's any relation to Lord Bobby Davison of Pigsboro!.

That season Wilkinson was the only manager to use this tactic against Tracey (Carl Shutt on Boxing Day and Bobby Davison on Easter Monday) because throughout the season Tracey's kicking was so accurate, usually finding Deano's head and Wilkinson was aware of that. I was surprised that no other manager in the division used the same tactic against Tracey

It was not widely used because (1) forwards kept getting caught offside if the ball came straight back and (2) refs could blow for a foul sometimes if Tracey had contact with the striker.

Leeds had neither of these problems, because Gordon Strachan refereed both of our games against them.

What Shutt did on Boxing Day and Davison did on Easter Monday every time after Tracey managed to kick the ball upfield was to run towards the linesman and stay near him "to let him know" that he (Shutt or Davison) wasnt interferring with play. Wilkinson wanted to make sure that Tracey didnt roll the ball out of the box and be given time to play accurate balls upfield. The refs for both games against L**ds were lenient on Shutt/Davison intimidation tactics on Tracey

That's right. I can remember Shutt at the Lane being permanently offside and the linesman doing nothing.

Of course, the tone was set in that game when Vinnie Jones did his usual trick of chopping someone (possibly Agana) down almost immediately after kick off, and the ref did nothing. Leeds clogged with impunity thereafter.

I much prefer to remember Sheffield United 1-0 Leeds on 8th September 1970 (my 21st birthday) with all my Leeds mates from university.

Great night!

We hammered L**ds that night. In the 1st half it was attack, attack starting from Tudor's shot hitting the woodwork in the 1st minute

Some refs had different interpretions with the "not interferring with play" rule. It wouldnt surprise me if before the match Wilkinson asked the match officials for their interpretation on the "not interferring with play" rule.

Remember Ray Tinkler in the L**ds v WBA game in 1971? WBA's Colin Suggett was in an offside position (linesman flagged) when Tony "Bomber" Brown ran onto a through ball but Tinkler waved play on because he decided Suggett wasnt interferring with play and Brown was allowed to carry on before squaring the ball to Astle to put WBA 2 up. L**ds players and their fans got into in a massive uproar!

Easily in my top 20 of games ever attended.

Obviously these days I understand it was only a cup game and doesn't actually count anymore.

I remember being in a bar when I was a student at Swansea around 2000 and drinking with a West Ham, a Spurs, an Everton, and a L**ds fan. The L**ds fan says "...of course, L**ds are most people's second team..." The four of us nearly choked to death.

He's got a point Walthy. I suspect everyone has a hated local rival and then Leeds come a close second.
